  20. Who is this document for?
  21.  This file is intended for anyone who currently distributes files
  22.  to other BBS systems, or for anyone who is thinking of starting
  23.  a File Distribution Network.
  24.  
  25.  The IFDC FileGate Project<sm> is interested in speaking to you
  26.  if you are now the coordinator of a File Distribution Network
  27.  (FDN) accessible via FidoNet technology.
  28.  
  29.  If you are thinking of starting a file distribution network, I'd
  30.  be glad to help you out as well.

  33. How Does The IFDC FileGate<sm> Work?
  34.  I have set up a linux system where you can upload your files
  35.  via ftp or Binkp/Binkd protocols, with a private user account. 
  36. If you cannot do this, please contact me and let me know and 
  37. we'll work out another method. 
  38.  
  39.  In cases where your FDN is available from a site already
  40.  connected to the FileGate, we may be able to pick up the files
  41.  from that FileGate site as long as the files distributed meet
  42.  distribution requirements as outlined in the IFDC Policy Draft
  43.  .006 document section 1.2 (see FGPOL006.TXT).

  45.  This method of collecting files enables FDN Coordinators to
  46.  concentrate their resources on the type of activity that makes a
  47.  quality FDN, i.e., collecting and collating files specific to an
  48.  FDN's audience.  End users who make up the audience of your FDN
  49.  on FidoNet BBS's appreciate the FileGate because of the constant
  50.  stream of quality, up to date, and often unique files.

  53. What are the Technical Requirements?
  54.  You must be running TICK or a TICK compatible program to automate file
  55.  release.
  56.  
  57.  You will need a dialup account to access the internet, and software to ftp
  58.  into FileGate's ftp server.  If you need this type of software, let me
  59.  know since I have collected a good number of these types of programs
  60.  
  61. Are There Policy Requirements?
  62.  You must read through and agree to abide by the policies
  63.  developed for the IFDC FileGate<sm>.  As of this writing, the
  64.  current policy document is IFDC FileGate Policy Draft .006, and
  65.  it is included in the FDNINFO archive.
  66.  
  67.  Since the IFDC FileGate Project <sm> was initiated, and is
  68.  organized by FDN Coordinators like yourself, we believe you, as
  69.  an FDN Coordinator, will find FileGate policies easy to work
  70.  with.
  71.  
  72.  If your FDN file Echo areas overlap an existing FDN you will be
  73.  expected to work with any FDNs in question to resolve the
  74.  overlap.  In the FileGate Policy Draft, several options are
  75.  listed as possible resolutions.  We are, however, always willing
  76.  to discuss other means that you may think of to avoid
  77.  duplication of files and services by FileGate member FDN's. One
  78.  of the goals of the FileGate is to reduce the bandwidth that the
  79.  duplication of files creates.  In File Distribution, duplication
  80.  of Files has in the past burdened those who move files to HUBs
  81.  and other sites in terms of money and time.  Your willingness to
  82.  address this concern is very important.

  85. What Other Services does the IFDC FileGate Provide?
  86.  Other means of distribution are always being discussed to
  87.  further conserve FDN resources.  For reasons which may be unique
  88.  to your situation and your FDN, you may opt not to include your
  89.  FDN in these other methods of distribution.  Your desires will
  90.  always be honored.
  91.  
  92.  Right now, IFDC FileGate files are sent to the following FidoNet Star
  93. systems: the-estar.com, www.juge.com, nwstar.com.  Links to other star
  94. systems exist as well overseas, covering most continents in the world.

  96.  All IFDC FileGate files are also sent to our anonymous ftp/www site:

  101. Outside of the Above Services, Where are IFDC FileGate files
  102. Delivered?
  103.  IFDC FileGate files are delivered to SuperSites in the Mainland China,
  104.  The Philipines, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, and
  105. others,  as well as North American HUBs in Quebec Canada, New York, etc.
  106.  
  107.  Each of these HUBs and Supersites has a structure set up to have
  108.  other BBS systems pick up from them, and generally have 10
  109.  systems each who pick up from them.

  111.  If you have overseas Coordinators set up now, you can ask them
  112.  to hook into one of the IFDC FileGate SuperSites to pick up
  113.  their file traffic.

  116. How Can My FDNs Files Be Made Available to the rest of Fidonet?
  117.  
  118. Generally, FDN Coordinators link into the Filegate system (currently
  119. 1:261/38) and drop off their files and tics.  The FileGate system then
  120. sends the files on to all major HUBs in Fidonet.
  121.  
  122. Are There Any Archive Standards on the IFDC FileGate?
  123.  
  124.  No, you can use any archiver that allows you to include an
  125.  archive comment in the archive.  Each file you release must
  126.  contain the FILEGATE.HDR archive comment in the archive header.

  128.  Note:  it is important to use this method, since many authors
  129.  now do not allow the addition of files to their archives.  They
  130.  are within their rights under many copyright laws in the
  131.  world, since Shareware has been defined as a distribution
  132.  method, and does not remove an author's rights to how his
  133.  file is distributed.

  135. Where are the IFDC FileGate FDN Files Announced when Distributed?
  136.   Once your FDN is listed in FileGate.Zxx (the RAID type format listing of
  137.   FDNs on the IFDC FileGate), you can announce your files in one of
  138.   the Fidonet file announcemet message echos, such as FDN_ANNOUNCE.

  140. What's the Next Step in Getting My FDN on The IFDC FileGate:
  141.   Put the following information in an archive and drop it off at
  142.   1:261/38, send it uuencoded via email to janis@filegate.net:
  143.  
  144.     - Your FDN Name, and RAID type descriptor for AllFix,etc.:
  145.       i.e., "Programmers Distribution Network, PDN:")
  146.  
  147.       This descriptor will be used in many file tossing packages
  148.       such as allfix. It will also be used in the FILEGATE.ZXX file to
  149.       describe your file areas, like this:
  150.  
  151.       Area PDNASM      0     !       PDN: Assembly Related programming.
  152.  
  153.  
  154.     - Your FDN Policy document.  If you don't have one, you must
  155.       write one.  You can file request samples of policy documents
  156.       from my system if you need to, with a magic name of SAMPPOL
  157.       (samppol.zip).
  158.     - Brief Text describing your FDN
  159.     - A list of File Echo Tag Names in your FDN with descriptions in Raid
  160.       format.
  161.     - Message area Tag Names and descriptions for any File Network Message
  162.       echos that you would like picked up and distributed.  Due to
  163.       considerations regarding FidoNet BackBone echos and dupe loops, no
  164.       FidoNet BackBone echos will be carried by the IFDC FileGate.

  166.     - Internet address, if available, for contact by other Fidonet nodes
  167.       and/or internet site where your files "live" :)
  168.  
  169.  Have a look at a current FILEGATE.ZXX file if you need to see what
  170.  descriptors are already in use.
