Similar to their ancestors taking part in Viking raids, the town dwellers of western Scandinavia owned single glass objects already at the end of the 12th and in the 13th century. Some of them were German Waldglas, some were imported from as far as the eastern parts of the Mediterranean. Small quantities of glass objects were imported to the towns of the northern Baltic area from the turn of the 14th century onwards. They included several Venetian enamelled beakers, which were rare luxury items all over Europe. The medieval glass material found in the Baltic area corresponds greatly to the finds recorded in northern Germany.
