I Introduction
════════════════
First of all, I'm French, so I apologize for any mistake, nonsense etc...
(La même documentation est en français dans LISEZMOI.TXT!)
ZOOM is, as you should have guessed it, a Tetris game. (I already hear you
saying: Again!) Why another tetris, since many ones already exist?
At first, it was a challenge, to show to a friend that a tetris didn't need
to be in text mode, with an infamous sound coming from the beeper! (His was
programmed in basic!)
So I programmed a VGA 256 colors game, supporting sound cards, and I also
added some improvements to the original Tetris. (Like new blocks, different
sizes levels, moving blocks...)
An interesting choice is the two simultaneous player mode. Both players
play on their own level. But it isn't as they were playing on two computers.
They can interact between each other. First, everytime a player complete
several lines, the same number minus 1 of lines is added in the other
player's level! Speed is primary. Moreover, the next piece is shown, but it
is the same for both players! You'll need to hurry in order to get "good"
pieces (You know, the large red bar you so often miss) and try not to take
bad ones which are difficult to place.
An even more interesting choice which give a new dimension to tetris is the
"Special" mode, which enables both players to control their own piece on the
same level! Instead of fighting each other like in the two players mode,
they will need to work together. Pieces can't cross each other, and a
player who don't care of the other player will soon be another victim of
the Game Over!
II What you need to run ZOOM
════════════════════════════════
ZOOM works on any PC with a VGA card and a 386 or higher processor.
Music uses SoundBlaster or Gravis Ultrasound card, or DAC or the internal
speaker.
Be sure to have the environment variable BLASTER or ULTRASND set in your
autoexec.bat file. If you have a dac, add a line SET DAC=port (where port
is the port of your DAC) in your autoexec.bat
If the game is too slow, get rid of memory managers such as EMM386 and
QEMM386.
III Running ZOOM
═══════════════════
To run ZOOM, simply type ZOOM. The first time you will run ZOOM,
you will be asked the keys you would like to use.
Pressing escape ends the game and returns to main menu. Pressing escape in
main menu returns to DOS.
Press F1 to pause the game, and F2 to toggle music.
F4 enables you to stop the color cycling of the background.
To change the game setup, type ZOOM SETUP, or delete the ZOOM.CFG file.
To run ZOOM with no music, type ZOOM NOSOUND
IV By the way, what I am to do?
═══════════════════════════════
Blocks appear at the screen top, and fall down. You need to form lines, which
are destroyed when completed. In order do to this, you can move and turn the
falling blocks. You go to next level after destroying the required amount of
lines. But if your wall climb up to the top, you loose!
V Register!
═══════════
This game is SHAREWARE. It is not free. If you like it and want to continue
to use it, please register. Don't forget this game took many hours to program,
to draw graphics etc...
Two ways to register ZOOM!
1) Send me money!
You are free to determine the value you think ZOOM is worth! (No limits!)
For any contribution of $10 (US dollars) or more, you will receive a code
which will enable you to turn your ZOOM unregistered version into a
registered one. You will then be able to play more than 100 new levels!
(They come 15 by 15.) Easy and hard ones, theme levels (fruits, cartoons,
moving levels and more!)
For any contribution of $20 (USD) or more, I will send you a disk (3.5) with
other games I created (a VGA shoot'em up, intros...), the last release of
ZOOM (if it exists) and a LEVEL EDITOR to design your own ZOOM levels!
You will be able to choose levels size, speed, falling blocks design, and of
course pattern! You will also be able to modify ZOOM original levels!
Foreign banknotes accepted. (But I prefer USD or french francs)
Foreign banks checks not accepted.
2) For US residents only.
Send me a nice T-Shirt (XL size) of your local NBA or NFL team! I will
send you your code to access the other ZOOM levels. Add $5 (USD) if you
wish to receive the disk with the level editor.
Anyway, please copy or print REGISTER.FRM and complete it!
Why do you need to register? First it's really cheap! Moreover, you can
receive new levels and games.
The shareware concept is based on a moral contract between the author (me)
and the user (you). The author let's you try his software before you acquire
it. It allows you to verify it works on your computer, suits your needs, and
above all, that you like it!
VI Distribute ZOOM everywhere!
═════════════════════════════════
You are free to copy this game in its unregistered release to anybody you
want to, including BBS, associations etc...
But please, copy it in its integrity, with REGISTER.FRM and doc files.
Sharewares distributors, magazines etc... can also distribute ZOOM. But
please! Notify me! And send me a copy of your catalog or magazine! I will
put you in my mailing list, and you'll receive my future games directly.
Modifications and reverse-engineering are prohibited.
Sorry, source code is not for sale!
VII Special thanks go to:
═════════════════════════
- Sébastien Granjoux for the great sound system
- Tchi Southivong for the ZOOM, HI SCORES and GAME OVER logos
- Ron / Psychosquad for the "virtual" reader. ;)
- Unknown for the music
- Everyone who helped me, tested ZOOM or gave me advices.
VIII A few words about ZOOM author.
══════════════════════════════════════
I'am born in Paris, France in 1976. (I am now seventeen)
Computer world came to me in my youth. I first used an ORIC ATMOS (48 Kb of
RAM!). It's on this computer my programmer carreer started. (In basic). Few
months later, ORIC declared a bankrupt...
Few years later, I purchased a Thomson (French) TO16 (XT, CGA, 360 Kb floppy
and no hard disk), a little before Thomson stopped its informatical
division...
Still a little basic. A few games in GW-BASIC, very limited. And then, I
discovered Turbo Pascal!!! (In these years, it was TP3, with an user
unfriendly interface.) It permitted me to make directly executable files!
(compiled basic didn't exist yet.)
I now possess a 16 Mhz 386 SX, with a VGA card and a little 40 Mb hard disk.
ZOOM was entirely program with it, but it begins to limit me...
I'am now (1993) in math sup (I don't know the US correspondent level) near
Paris, France.
