WELCOME. Family Matters« 97 is a Made-For-Windows95/98 genealogy
program from MatterWare, authored by Ray Nicklas, reachable via e-mail
at ray@matterware.com. If you have already registered your copy of
Family Matters, you have the ability to store as many persons in as
many different files as you wish. If you have not yet registered,
each data file is limited to twenty families. Payment of the registration
fee will provide you with a User ID, Key Code, and the latest version.
(See ORDER.TXT for registration and ordering information.)
If you already use a genealogy program, Family Matters can import your
GEDCOM data. Whether registered or not, import as much as you like,
though the un-registered version will not allow additions once the
twenty-family limit is exceeded.
A fully capable web site can be generated, without limit to the number
of families or persons contained in the data file. Once you have
placed your FM-generated genealogical site on the web, drop me a line
at MatterWare@aol.com, with a short paragraph describing its content,
and your URL. There will be a page at the Family Matters web site
linking the sites that send me that type of information.
COMPUTER HARDWARE. Family Matters 97 requires Windows 95, 98, or NT and
a 486DX/66 minimum (Pentium recommended). The memory needs are
dependent on the processor and what else is loaded in memory. Windows
will utilize the disk for program portions that do not fit in memory,
thus slowing your computer. Thus, 24MB is the recommended amount for
most situations. In addition, the presence of a secondary processor
cache can be of significant benefit.
If you use a program that attempts to simulate more memory
than you actually have, you should know that database programs
like Family Matters are aggressive users of physical memory.
You will be better off installing actual physical memory,
rather than using a program that sacrifices processing power
for memory numbers.
INSTALLATION from downloaded .zip file. Unzip the downloaded
file into a SINGLE TEMPOARY DIRECTORY; not the directory you intend
to install Family Matters 97 into.
DO NOT install, unzip, or copy any of Family Matters 97's
files into your old Family Matters installation directory.
INSTALLATION CAUTIONS: Anti-virus programs frequently interfere with
software installations. Boot your computer with you antivirus program
in-active. You can then re-enable it once the installation is complete.
If your computer has Access 2000, and you receive messages about
Access 2000 inability to convert the mde file, contact MatterWare
for a converted Famat97.mde file.
NEXT, RUN the Setup program from the Start menu.
SUPPORT. The User ID and Key Code, supplied when you register, will also
unlock updated versions of Family Matters that you may later download.
The file FMxxxUP.ZIP will contain everything you need to upgrade. The
file VERSIONS.TXT explains the files needed to be copied for the upgrade.
On the Internet, the Web site http://www.matterware.com will
contain the necessary replacement files, and instructions for updating.
You can register there to be automatically notified of changes
at the web site.
Should you decide not to purchase Family Matters 97, drop me a line at
ray@matterware.com and tell me what features you felt you needed,
what version number you tried, and what caused you to choose not to
purchase at this time. Please also indicate the relative importance
of your needs.
Please read the file LICENSE.TXT for a full discussion of your use and
distribution rights. See ORDERS.TXT for registration and ordering
information. See VERSIONS.TXT for a version/release/upgrade history.
Good luck on your Ancestral Hunt.
