+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Mac95 OS8 Theme !ReadMe_1st!.txt +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

Ever wanted your Win95/NT4w PC to look/feel like a Mac? Well...now it can with
this theme and the use of the support files included in this distribution. For
a visual of my system be sure to look at the "ViewMe2nd.gif" included in this
archive. This is a screen shot of the WindowsNT 4 Workstation PC I use at work,
but my home Win95 OSR2 PC looks identical to it, so you get the idea ;-). Even
though this this was my first attempt at Theme design, I was happy with the
result. I can only hope you will be too.
It should be known up front that I had absolutely nothing to do with this
theme and the support programs included in the distribution archive other than
putting all of the components together. All icons, cursors (animated and static),
bitmaps, fonts, programs, etc. were created by other people. The only names I
know for a fact are Ritchie Chow (creator of WinMac) and Richard Garrett (author
of the original Macintosh theme I downloaded in order to get the basic building
blocks for the Win95OS8 Theme.
This theme has been tested and used on both Windows95 (OSR2) and WindowsNT 4
Workstation (SP3). WindowsNT 4 Workstation requires theme support which can be
installed from the WindowsNT 4 Resource kit. Windows95 requires theme support
from either Microsoft Plus! or any other application that gives Windows95 the
ability to use themes.
My apologies for the size of this distribution. I simply wanted to make sure
that ALL of the required support files were available so you can get/use the
full effect of this theme. As we all know, if I were to simply list the URL's
where they could be obtained...within a few short months the site would be
gone or the author may have relocated. Either way, you might have a rough time
trying to locate them again. So...they're all here for your convenience.
Contents of "Mac95OS8 Support Files.zip"
1) WinMac 3.20beta by Ritchie Chow. In order to complete the illusion of
actually running OS8 on a PC, this program is essential. It is a functional
Mac style toolbar that can be customized sufficiently to make it extremely
believable. WinMac supports the appearance of MacOS 7.5 and 8. The documen-
tation states "Windows NT not yet supported", but I am running it success-
fully on NT4 Workstation without any problems at all.

2) WinShade 2.11 from BlueCarpet Software http://www.bluecarpet.com
3) WinTop - a Microsoft PowerToy (does not work under WindowsNT)
Other credits/contact info:
Richard Garrett darkcat15@usa.net for the original Mac theme used as the basis
for the Mac95OS8 theme.
Instructions:
1) Unzip the Mac95OS8.zip file to the root of the drive where your themes are
located(usually C:\ with the themes being located in C:\PROGRAM FILES\PLUS!\THEMES).
NOTE: There WILL be some files extracted to your root dir (logo.sys), your
WINDOWS dir (logos.sys, logow.sys, welcome.sys, smile.sys), your WINDOWS\FONTS
dir (Chicago.ttf, Geneva.ttf, Helvetic.ttf, Monaco.ttf, NewYork.ttf, Palatino.ttf),
and your WINDOWS\SYSTEM dir (neroicons.dll). If any of these files already exist
on your system, you are advised to make backup copies in case you wish to return
to your original configuration.
2) Unzip the "Mac95OS8 Support Files.zip" archive to a temp dir, then proceed in
the following order:
a) Unzip and install WinMac 3.2b.
b) Unzip and install WinShade
c) Unzip and install WinTop
d) Configure your system to use Mac95OS8 Theme by using the normal
procedures you use for theme support (dependant on how your system
is configured and what software you have installed that supports
use of themes).
e) You may have to manually configure your system to use the Chicago.ttf
font that was placed in your font directory. However, if you're really
brave, just double click on the "Mac95OS8Color&FontScheme.REG" file
included in this distribution. Once you've double clicked the .REG
file, right click on your desktop, choose Properties, then Appearance,
and select the Mac95OS8.scheme from the Scheme drop down box.
f) configure the Windows Start Bar properties to "Auto Hide".
g) start WinShade (place a copy in your startup folder as well)
h) start WinMac (place a copy in your startup folder as well).
If all goes well, your system should look something like the .gif file you viewed
earlier. If not, it's easy enough to change the default icons and colors your
system uses for various resources. I won't go into detail here since it's WAY
to much information to include in a readme file, but you can always consult your
copy of the Windows95 or WindowsNT Resource Kit documentation ;-)
DISCLAIMER: All files contained herein are for use AT YOUR OWN RISK. I, nor the
authors of the programs included in the support files archive claim
any responsibility for any nasty little things that might result
from the use of this theme and/or the aforementioned programs.
I'm not going to include a location for "the latest version" since you never
know where I'll end up. My email above will be accurate probably for the rest
of my natural (or otherwise) life, so feel free to drop me a note if you have
questions. This statement DOES NOT imply that I will offer lifetime technical
support for this theme (sorry...I usually get paid $$ for my advice ;-).
