  3. Extensis Portfolio - formerly known as Fetch - is considered the media
  4. management standard among graphics professionals. Extensis Portfolio 3.0 offers
  5. a quick, easy and efficient way to organize, browse, manage and retrieve
  6. digital content. For individuals as well as workgroups Portfolio greatly speeds
  7. up the creative process by letting users locate, access and reuse existing
  8. digital files.

  68. If you have not purchased a serial number for Portfolio, you can run it as a
  69. full-functioning demo for 60 days.  After this period expires, Portfolio will
  70. convert into a Browser version.  This version only allows read-only operations,
  71. so you will not be able to create catalogs or add items to catalogs. 
  72. Additionally, the Browser only operates in a single-user setting, so you will
  73. be locked out of any networked catalog that another user is accessing.  If you
  74. do access a networked catalog, all other users will be locked out of that
  75. catalog until you close the catalog.

  136. During the launch of Portfolio, you will be requested to serialize and register
  137. the software. Please enter the serial number located on the back of the manual. 
  138. If you do not have a serial number, you can choose to run Portfolio in demo
  139. mode; demo mode allows full functionality for 60 days.

  141. Please register using one of the built-in electronic registration methods. If
  142. you do not have a modem, fax/modem, or printer, you may fill out the
  143. registration card in the back of the manual.

  146. General Notes on Portfolio use
  147. 1) Portfolio uses multiple file translation systems to generate thumbnails and
  148. preview many file types.  On the Macintosh, Portfolio will take advantage of
  149. the translation capabilities for some formats of MacOS Easy Open and QuickTime
  150. if both are installed and active.
  151. 2) File types come in many different flavors, depending on the application they
  152. were created in and the settings used when the file was saved.  Portfolio may
  153. encounter some files that it cannot generate a thumbnail for.  In these
  154. instances, Portfolio will usually substitute the file's icon as the thumbnail.  
  155. 3) When working with large images or catalogs with many items, you may need to
  156. give Portfolio more memory. On the Macintosh you can do this by allocating more
  157. memory to the application via the Get Info dialog in the Finder. On Windows,
  158. increase the Virtual Memory cache via the System Control Panel.
  159. 4) The Missing Files dialog will only search for missing files on currently
  160. mounted volumes.  As a result, it may not show all files that have out-of-date
  161. links.
  162. 5) When converting a Fetch 1.5 catalog on the Macintosh, the file size for each
  163. item will not be displayed due to the fact that Fetch 1.5 does not store the
  164. size of each file.  To rectify this situation, simply update your Portfolio
  165. catalog after converting it from a Fetch 1.5 catalog.
  166. 6) In multi-user situations, Portfolio may display an 'Item Deleted' symbol for
  167. items that are currently being modified by another user. In this situation,
  168. simply Refreshing the gallery should remedy the problem.
  169. 7) In low memory situations features such as the Master Keyword List may not
  170. display correctly.  If you experience such problems, increasing the program
  171. allocated memory (on the Mac) or increasing the Virtual Memory cache (on
  172. Windows) should solve the problem.
  173. 8) On Windows, if you select a block of items to drag in a gallery, you must
  174. click-drag on the last item selected in order to drag all of the items. 
  175. Clicking on any of the other selected items will deselect the group and select
  176. just that item.  If you use Select All, click on the first item in the gallery
  177. to drag the entire contents of that gallery.
  178. 9) On Windows, there is a system limit to the number of items you can select in
  179. the Add Items file dialog. If you are trying to select the entire contents of a
  180. folder, either click on the Current Folder button or simply drag the folder or
  181. selected items onto an open gallery from the Explorer.
  182. 10) When working in a cross-platform environment, be aware of different
  183. restrictions each operating system's file system has.  For example, Mac file
  184. names can only be 31 characters long and Windows file names cannot use the
  185. following characters:  \/:*?<>|  
  186. Failure to observe such guidelines may result in users on one platform or the
  187. other being unable to access the original files from Portfolio.
  188. 11) Portfolio can create two different types of links to local files, depending
  189. on how they are cataloged:  
  190.     (A) If you want to catalog a file so that it is sharable to other users on
  191. your network, turn on File Sharing on the Mac or add the items by accessing
  192. your local files via the Network Neighborhood on Windows.  This will place a
  193. full network path name, which allows other machines on the network to locate
  194. the files on your computer.  
  195.     (B) If you want to catalog a local path name to a file, turn off File
  196. Sharing on the Mac or catalog files directly from local drives on Windows. When
  197. this is done with removable media, users will be asked for the media to be
  198. inserted locally instead of having Portfolio attempt to access the files over a
  199. network (which may be inaccessible).  Note that files cataloged from local hard
  200. drives in this fashion will be inaccessible to other users.  This mode is
  201. particularly useful when the images are on removable media that has been given
  202. to another user.
