  18.         In the past few years, the computer world has been gaining interest
  19. in computer-generated speech and sound.  In this area, the Apple Macintosh
  20. and Commodore Amiga provide built-in sound control so that their machines can
  21. play digitized recordings with little effort from the programmer.  IBM,
  22. however, has chosen not to include advanced sound capabilities in its line of
  23. personal computers.  The market has shown that relatively few people will buy
  24. speech or sound add-ons from either IBM or third parties.  Until such
  25. hardware is standardized, speech software will encounter great difficulty
  26. in gaining acceptance.  In this regard, however, mathematics, engineering,
  27. and software can come to the rescue:  it is possible for a PC to play good
  28. quality sound without additional hardware.
  29.         Over the years, several attempts have been made to play digitized
  30. sound on PCs without additonal hardware.  Many have appeared in the public
  31. domain, but few are coherent.  Commercial software has had greater success,
  32. but most of these programs produce rough speech.  With the recent rise of
  33. interest in multimedia, some developers have produced good quality sound.
  34. This Raiders Demo rivals that of the best public domain and 
  35. commercial successes.

  52. To run the program, type the filename (omitting the extension) at the
  53. command prompt.  There are no command-line switches.
  54.  
  55. In addition, the sound files (*.SND) may be used with other programs
  56. that play digitized sound.

  58. LIMITATIONS
  59. ===========

  61. You must have an 80286 or better processor in your PC.
  62.  
  63. Your computer system must have enough available RAM to load the sound files.
  64.  
  65. This demo relies on the system timer interrupt, so any other interrupt-
  66. driven software may conflict with it.  Pressing keys, moving the mouse, etc.
  67. will put a buzz in the output.  The program will not give proper results if 
  68. the DOS 4.0 DOSShell has been run or if it is run in a DOS box under OS/2 or
  69. Windows; however, it runs well under the DOS 5.0 DOSShell.

  74.     This demo uses a special version of a general-purpose digitized
  75.     sound player that runs on all PCs.  If you are interested in
  76.     a complete package of sound programs, write for more information.
