  12.      Digital audio techniques were investigated with special
  13.  
  14. concentration on computer applications.  Experimentation showed
  15.  
  16. that the Intel 8253 programmable interval timer, found on all IBM
  17.  
  18. PCs and compatibles, can output digitized sound.  The
  19.  
  20. relationship between pulse amplitude modulation and pulse width
  21.  
  22. modulation signals was found to be significant to this process.
  23.  
  24. Feeding digitized sound data to the chip results in an inherent
  25.  
  26. transfer from pulse amplitude modulation to pulse width
  27.  
  28. modulation encoding.  The relationship in signal modulation
  29.  
  30. allows IBM PCs to play digitized sound without the use of extra
  31.  
  32. hardware.

  36.      David T. Chappell is a senior in the computer science
  37.  
  38. curriculum at North Carolina State University.  In addition, he
  39.  
  40. participates in the co-op program and works for IBM.  His
  41.  
  42. interests are in the areas of advanced input/output,
  43.  
  44. technological research, and scientific applications.  David plans
  45.  
  46. to attend graduate school in computer science or a related field.
