  2.   This version of PLAY IT BY EAR is intended to be used for demonstration
  3.   purposes only.  The program is fully functional.  After 10 minutes of
  4.   use the program will abruptly end.

  6.   Please refer to the on-line help feature for information on
  7.   the general use of the program.  This file simply covers some undocumented
  8.   features and emphasizes some important things that you should know before
  9.   using the program.

  12.   MOUSE SUPPORT.  You MUST have a mouse installed on your computer to use
  13.   Play It By Ear.

  16.   USING THE PC INTERNAL SPEAKER.  The IBM PC internal speaker hardware was
  17.   never intended to be used for serious musical performance.  The sound
  18.   quality is adequate and the pitch is accurate.  Unfortunatly, this is only
  19.   true for single voice melodies.  Simultaneous pitches, like intervals and
  20.   chords, are not feasible.  We have seen some resourceful programmers make
  21.   the PC hardware approximate chords, but for the purpose of ear training the
  22.   results just were not good enough.  Therefore, if you do not own sound
  23.   enhancing hardware, Play It By Ear will arpeggiate, i.e. play like a melody,
  24.   all interval and chord forms.

  27.   MORE ABOUT THE INTERNAL SPEAKER.  The volume slider has no effect on the
  28.   sounds coming out of your PC internal speaker. Once again, the hardware
  29.   is too limited to make this practical.  In addition, some MIDI keyboards
  30.   may not be sensitive to note volume commands. These keyboards will not
  31.   respond to the volume slider either. To regulate the volume, simply use
  32.   the keyboard's volume control.

  35.   COMMAND LINE OPTIONS.  Play It By Ear supports HERCULES, EGA/VGA and CGA
  36.   video adapters.  At the start of the program the highest resolution mode
  37.   of your hardware is detected and used. You may force the program to use a
  38.   specific video mode by invoking the program as such:

  40.     EAR C   (for CGA)
  41.     EAR E   (for EGA)
  42.     EAR V   (for VGA)
  43.     EAR M   (for Hercules).

  46.   At the end of each exercise drill a message pops up that indicates how
  47.   you did for that particular response: "OK" or "OOPS!". For you power users
  48.   a command line option is provided to suppress this feature:  EAR X. This
  49.   option may be mixed with one of the above video options, e.g. EAR C X.

  52.   SOUND BLASTER SUPPORT.  If you own a Sound Blaster card you will need
  53.   to run the program using the "S" command line option.  A convenient BAT
  54.   file, EAR_SB.BAT, has been included on the master disk that does this for
  55.   you.  So, to make the program recognize your card, type either of the
  56.   following at the DOS prompt:

  59.     EAR_SB

  62.   SOUND BLASTER MIDI.  Version 1.00 of Play It By Ear does not support the
  63.   MIDI expansion module of the Sound Blaster card.  If you own the Sound
  64.   Blaster card with the MIDI module, or think that you may purchase one in
  65.   the future, please be sure to fill out and send in the registration form
  66.   so we can let you know when it is supported.
