-
- CD-Nap is a hardware direct utility for Hitachi CD-ROM drives
- which use the PC bus interface cards. PC/XT/AT & PS/2 models
- 25/30.
-
- The operation of these programs is similar to the Romlock
- software.
-
- CD-Nap issues a command to drives 0-3 so that if a ROM drive is
- not accessed within 9 minutes, it turns off the laser and spins
- down to the Stop mode. Normally when power is on and a disc is
- in the drive, the drive is always in Pause, waiting to read the
- next data sector, with the disc spinning and the laser ON.
-
- After using CD-Nap and when it is not accessed for 9 minutes, the
- drive falls asleep. The next program access which reads data or
- plays audio wakes the drive up. There will be a short delay
- while the drive obtains focus on the disc and spins up to normal
- speed.
-
- Any access to the drive before 9 minutes pass, restarts the 9
- minute timer.
-
- The Nap program offers the possibility of reduced dust on the
- laser lens, and increased operating life of the disc motor and
- laser assembly. On battery powered computers with internal
- CD-ROM drives, CD-Nap may save power.
-
- After Nap is used, it is effective even while playing audio. So
- if a program starts audio play and exits, after 9 minutes the
- audio will stop, unless the audio software clears the Nap
- command.
-
- If CD-Nap causes your CD-ROM application program to report an
- error as it tries to access the sleeping drive, please do not use
- CD-Nap.
-
- No one seems to know what improvements in disc motor or laser
- life will occur by using CD-Nap. The Hitachi drives use a
- Brushless Direct Drive disc motor unlike other CD products.
-
- If the system is left on 24 hours, or is not used for hours at a
- time, CD-Nap will be effective.
-
- Suggested use: Execute CD-Nap from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file after
- MSCDEX.EXE. CD-Nap is cleared by Power On/Off or conditions
- which also clear the lock mode on the drive.
-
- CD-Nap is Freeware and may be copied as needed. When you use it,
- you accept any risks involved in its use or misuse.
- CD-Nap was created using Quick C on a XT compatible.
