It is a quick hack, that will convert Amiga IFF (8SVX) sound file to Mac sound files, ready to drop onto your system folder. Currently it requires system 7, enough RAM (use MultiFinder temporary RAM) to keep the complete sample. No drag and drop support yet, no multi-channel sounds. This may come later. As I said, it is just a quick hack. #### BINHEX digitrack.hqx **** From: Mark Armantrout <armtrout@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu> Subject: Digitrack SUBMISSION Date: Fri, 31 Jul 92 11:45:18 CDT I have included a small Mac application I wrote called Digitrack. If you find it worthy, please feel free to post it anywhere for public distribution. In this .sit.hqx file, you will find the application, a help file, an about file, and a small, sample collection of sound resources for use with this program. I will also send along (in another mail message) a larger collection of sounds (also in the correct format for use with Digitrack.) Following is a short description; other instructions can be found in the help files. Digitrack is a small, unfinished program that will read in all the 'snd ' sound resources in a file, and allow these sounds to be accessed (played) immediately from the keyboard. Each sound is given a letter, and when the corresponding key is pressed on the keyboard the sound is played. A track of such sounds can be recorded and played back in real-time. This program can be used for live sound recordings where any number of digitized sounds need to be immediately playable. This format was introduced by the program "SoundTracker" written for computers of the Commodore-Amiga family. The music has high output quality, although it is not just digitized, but stored in a compact way as notes. This approach makes it possible to obtain moderate file sizes (between 50 and 300 kBytes) even for songs which are several minutes long. These music files are commonly called "Modules" or ".MOD files." Shareware ($30); comes with C source code, and documentation in Spanish. Please, put this file as "el-sound-trecker.hqx" in the same directory as the german and english versions. Un saludo a los hispano-parlantes a quien pueda llegar este programa. En la documentacion encontrareis informacion interesante sobre como funciona Sound-Trecker. Greetings from Spain. Jose M. For UNREGISTERED copy, makes it more clear that music save feature is DISABLED in the greeting dialog, to avoid confusion. Oct. 16 1992 PianoSim 1.1: Due to many people's request, I rewrite the interface in the current version1.1, for the macs with 9" B/W monitor, without the requirement of color QuickDraw (version 1.0 requires that to run). I also fix a major bug in this release. The version 1.1 use new icons for the application, please rebuilt desktop (hold down Option+Command while restart your mac) to use the new icons. I am going to make PianoSim a very well maintained program, please support me by sending your registration fee ($25 is really nothing compared with how much a commercial music program charges). Your help will be very appreciated. Oct. 10 1992 PianoSim introduction: Here is a new software called PianoSim I created for the Macintosh. It's a music instrument simulation with full music input and edit ability. You can use mouse click (sweep) or keystroke to play music real time. You can choose your favorite instrument from a panel of choices, including piano, bell, flute, guitar, sax... You can record your performance in real time and save it as a file for future playback. The software has a full featured editor, so you can edit and modify your performance. You can also just input your favorite music and save it as a record, for future playback and entertainment. The time duration of each note is accurate up to one tick (1/60 sec), the music symbol shown doesn't change the exact time duration embedded. You can control sound volume, play back speed (tempo), and pitch of all the piano keys within two octave. You can personalize your computerkey-pianokey correspondence and save your setting. Several of my favorite music is provided, including Fur Elise, love story, and a few Christmas carols. If you enter your favorite records, I'd love to have a copy if you are willing to offer (if you don't like the record to be included in future updates, please say so, I will honor your request). The software can be fun for adult as well as for child. I'd be very happy to know if you like it and have a good time with it. PianoSim is distributed as shareware, and ask for $25 shareware fee. But if you REALLY couldn't afford it, send me any amount you prefer. By sending me your donation, you are helping me to obtain enough resource and encouragement to write better software for the Macintosh. Your help will be very apprecaited. Registered user will receive a Thank You letter together with registration code to personalize your copy, and receive any future updates free. Please only distribute unregistered copies. PianoSim is tested on MacSE, Classic, II, IIcx, IIx, IIsi, IIci, IIfx, Quadra, under system 7 and 6.0.4 up. Any bug reports, suggestions, comments, etc. are all welcome. Thank you for your time and hope you have fun with PianoSim. I am currently looking for a mac programming position (I am a Univ. of Chicago graduate student getting my degree), if you have a job offer or any information that may help, please contact me. I also wrote a game for Macintosh called SpaceInvader!, which can be downloaded from sumex.stanford.edu under info-mac/game directory. Have a try if you like games. A number of changes have been made, including: * Now supports many keyboard shortcuts, for standard and extended keyboard. * Select All added. * Now supports amplitude transformations. * Added shortcuts in playback rate edit text box for standard Mac frequencies. * Provides compression and expansion of standard Macintosh System 7 sound files, such as system beep sounds. * Now supports for LCII. * Added Use Defaults button and Undo support for Preferences. * Remembers microphone configuration between sessions. The following bugs have been fixed - * Fixed bug in Normalise that meant Undo did not work when Normalise was the first edit to be made to a sample. * Fixed bug in Open/Import where debugger was entered on insert floppy. * Export now exports whole file instead of just the current selection. * 3:1 compressed Audio IFF files are now opened correctly. Thanks to all those who requested the changes above or pointed out the bugs. Description: ----------- This version of Sample Editor NEEDS the following minimum set-up - * System 7 * 68020 processor (Mac II, LC, etc.) (or better) * 13" 8-bit monitor (or better) * Sound input device and plenty of RAM, if you want to record. Sample Editor is an application that allows you to edit and manipulate sampled sound on the Macintosh. It supports sound input and output from Audio Interchange (AIFF) files, Mac 'snd' resources, and the Clipboard. The sound may be compressed by a factor of up to 6:1. You can also record direct from any connected microphone, limited only by the available memory. The waveform of a sound can be displayed in any level of detail you require by selecting the part you wish to zoom in on. You can edit it using Cut, Copy, Paste and Clear, and apply transformations such as Fade, Normalise, Crossfade and Digital Delay. Other features include: % Full balloon help % 3d Hypercard Audio Palette-like user interface % Auto-play of files in open file dialogue box % Real-time pitch bending % On-screen indication of playback position % Overview of whole waveform displayed at all times % Time grid behind main waveform % Animated input level meter % Selections and insertion points can be marked and named % Full Undo and Redo support A full user guide is included with the application. Sample Editor is copyright 1992 Garrick McFarlane, but you may make copies of and distribute this version for personal use provided you keep it intact with all its documentation. Commercial shareware or other companies should please contact me before including Sample Editor on any compilation disks or otherwise distributing the program. SoundExtractor 1.31 by Alberto Ricci shareware $5 Yes, it's version 1.31! And here are the new features: - It can play the sounds it is extracting. - It can beep when the extraction is finished. - You can choose custom playback rates. This can be very useful if you need to extract sounds from a Unix or Amiga file. Version 1.4, anyway, will probably recognize those sounds as well as AIFF and SoundEdit Pro files. Some bugs were fixed. For those who don't know, SoundExtractor is a System 7 dependent utility that lets you "extract" sounds from any kind of file. You just drag it on top of SoundExtractor's icon, and it'll create a sound folder (with its own icon) containing all the sounds it could find, in System 7 format. This means that all you need to play them is to double-click on them. SoundExtractor will also extract data sounds, stereo data or resource sounds, or non-standard resource sounds. SoundExtractor supports Balloon Help, Apple Events, and requires System 7. Hope you like it, - Alberto Ricci. Perhaps the words of the author, Tom Erbe, best describes the program's purpose: --- I am writing this program to perform various soundfile manipulations on the Macintosh that have previously not been available. At the present, I have implemented soundfile type conversion, soundfile convolution, the phase vocoder, a binaural filter and an amplitude analysis and gain change module. In the near future I hope to add a spectral dynamics processor, and Larry Polansky's mutation synthesis. SoundHack can now read and write the following formats: Sound Designer II, Audio IFF, IRCAM, DSP Designer and NeXT .snd (or Sun .au). It can read (but not write) raw data files. It can read and write 8-bit 5Law, 8-bit linear, 32-bit floating point and 16-bit linear data encoding. This program only works on Mac II and above machines! That is: you need a 68020 + 68881, a 68030 + 68882 or a 68040. --- ------------------------- CUT HERE -------------------------------------- SoundHack v.60 This is the latest version of SoundHack as of 6-17-92. It should replace all previous versions. The new feature is the phase vocoder. This allows independant time and pitch scaling. It will provide pvoc analysis files for Csound users (though I have not perfected this yet). If you had a beta copy, I have sped up pitch scaling by a factor of 4 since the beta release. SoundMover extracts sounds from almost any file, converts between types of sounds, and does minor editing. SndControl is a System 7 compatable (but not dependent) control panel that allows your mac to make sounds associated with certain events, like emptying the trash, restarting, or pressing the space bar. Its best feature is that you can have beeps, for example, chosen randomly from a collection, keeping the sounds interesting for much longer. Shareware $25 if you decide to keep it, worth every penny. I decided to upload the program I've been working on in its present incomplete state. As a Mac program it is not pretty but it is functional. It will read ulaw-encoded sounds and save them as Mac snd resources in an "sfil" type file. This means System 7 will let you double-click on them to play them or drop them into the System file. It has a few known bugs. The most serious one occurs when too many large sound files are converted at once. The Mac will just freeze up and you have to reboot. So far the program works for fairly large individual files but there is probably an upper limit. Theoretically it will handle up to 20 (small?) files in one batch. When such an sfil is dropped in the System, however, the first snd resource gets the name of the file and not that of the resource as the remaining resources do. Because of these bugs and its ugly UI, I'm not asking a shareware fee for this version. Use it at your own risk but please send additional bug reports, comments and suggestions to me.
