Barrow shipyard has built 309 submarines for the British Royal Navy including their very first submarine HM Submarine Boat No.1 (Holland 1) launched in 1901. The centenary of this achievement is being celebrated at Barrow and nationally in the year 2001.
The shipyard has also built a total of 26 submarines for other navies around the world and 16 world navies have operated Barrow-built submarines. Not included in the above totals are three Royal Navy Upholder Class submarines built by VSEL at its Cammell Laird shipyard at Birkenhead from 1986-1993.
