Britain is an island nation surrounded by water all round and needs the Navy to patrol the coasts, the sea areas and the oceans and protect us both on the sea and underwater. The Royal Navy's Submarine Service was started 100 years ago. It does not exist mainly to fight another nation but to keep the peace by protecting our country, its territories, its friends (allies) and its trade routes. But in the event of a war, it has the capability, skills, discipline and the very best training and equipment in the world to provide effective defence.
Our country has not been involved in a war at home since 1945 but in the last 20 years it has had to fight in the Falklands, the Gulf, the former Yugoslavia and Sierra Leone to protect countries loyal to the Queen and those of our friends and allies and particularly to stop dictators who try to seize what is not theirs or deny basic human rights and freedoms.
