Barrow-in-Furness has been selected to start the national programme of events in 2001 to celebrate the Centenary of the Royal Navy Submarine Service. The events are also designed to focus attention on the unique achievements of Barrow with submarines since 1901 and local schools have been invited to play their part in a range of submarine-related activities.
By their very nature, submarines are secretive and very little information is known about them apart from that published in specialist reference books or screened on the web. The information available is usually written in highly technical language using unexplained terminology sprinkled with an unhealthy amount of acronyms and abbreviations.
This guide contains typical Questions and Answers about Submarines and how they work. It was prepared initially for use by Barrow and District schoolteachers, to give their pupils factual information on various key aspects of submarines that they may be called upon to explain. The intention was to promote a greater awareness in schoolchildren of their town's most famous product before the Centenary events took place.
During the preparation of this guide, it became apparent from interest shown within BAE SYSTEMS that the content had appeal to an even wider audience, resulting in its inclusion in this CD issued by BAE SYSTEMS to celebrate Barrow shipyard's 100 years of submarine building for the Royal Navy.
