But first, let's get set up!
How to set up the CD for Use in the Classroom
I. Before you begin:
1. Print This Document. We suggest that you print a hard copy of this manual for quick reference as you work with the program. Make sure you have a printer selected and turned on. Open the ReadMe1.Doc" document in the main directory located on the "So Who's Doctor Rabbit" CD-ROM. Go to the file menu and select "Print". Repeat this process for the "ReadMe2.Doc" document.
2. Read this Document. Reviewing this entire "Teacher's Manual" document before you begin setting up your class folders will familiarize you with how they work. For future reference, you may access this document from two places: within the Class Manager while using the CD, or in the Teacher's "ReadMe" Manual when you first load the CD-ROM into your disk drive.
3. Install "QuickTime" onto your computer. Several activities in the CD-ROM utilize QuickTime technology. QuickTime is provided on the CD in case you don't already have it.
(Note: When you first open the CD on your desktop you will see the QuickTime Installer, Double click on it, it will then check to see if you need to install QuickTime or if you have an earlier version of QuickTime, and if so, it will install it for you. Once it is installed, you will need to restart your computer.)
4. Run the CD-ROM : If you are using a Mac, you will need to:
-- insert CD-ROM in your CD drive
-- Click on the "Teacher_040" icon if you are using a Mac with a 68040 Processor, or click on the "Teacher_PPC" icon if you are using a Power Mac.
If you are using a PC, you will need to:
-- insert CD-ROM in your CD drive
-- choose "run" from the File menu (in Windows 3.1) or choose "run" from the Start menu (in Windows 95)
-- type in D:/teach31.exe (in Windows 3.1) or D:/teach95.exe (in Windows 95) at the prompt (if D is your CD Drive; otherwise type the correct letter for your CD drive.)
Now you're ready to begin!
II. Setting Up and Using the Class Manager
Overview:
╖The Class Manager is a Filing System where you keep track of all classroom information including:
-- Class List
-- Activity Log: student log of time spent within the CD
-- Student's folder
-- Teacher's comments
╖These four main features (outlined below) help you maximize the CD in the classroom as a curricular-based learning tool.
1. Class List
This is your first step. Here you create a new class list, or open an existing class list. If you are using this program for the first time or want to add a new class list then select "Add New Class". (Note: when entering numbers here and throughout the program, use the numeric keys located above the letters on your keyboard. The numeric keypad to the right will not be operational.)
Creating a Class List:
╖After you have selected "Add New Class" you will be prompted to name the class and then to save that class or cancel out of the class creation. You select the directory where you want to save the Class List. It's helpful to make a note of the folder name for easy retrieval next time. You may enter more than one class list and save them with different names. If you are saving more than one class, we suggest that you create a special folder or directory to keep the different classes in the same place. After you have named and created a class, select "Add Student" and add a new student to that roster. The class is automatically updated as you enter each new student's name into that class.
╖The list of students appears in alphabetical order -- last name, first name. You can make necessary changes to a list by selecting "Open Existing Class". You will be prompted to select a class to open. You will then be able to modify that class list folder.
╖You can also control picture printing and document saving here.
Adding/Removing/Modifying a Student:
╖Clicking on the "Add Student" button adds a new student to the class list. The new student is inserted into the list in last name alphabetical order.
╖Clicking on the "Remove Student" button removes a student from the list, for example, if he or she moves away. To remove a student you must first click on the name of the student in the student list window. Then click the "Remove Student" button. The student will be removed from the student list.
╖Clicking on the "Modify Student" button allows you to change the spelling of a studentÆs name. To modify a student you must first click on the name of the student in the class student window. Then click the "Modify Student" button. You may now modify the student's name.
Working with the Class List
╖When you are working in the Class Manager, a list of the students in the active class will appear on screen.
╖When the appropriate folder tab is selected, you select a student from the list by clicking on the student's name. You will then have access to that student's activity log and work folder, and your confidential comments.
╖ You can select one student at a time from this list to review that student's work.
Opening Another Class List
╖When you access the Class Manager, the last class you used will be the current class shown.
╖Clicking on the "Open Existing Class" button allows you to open another class file. After clicking the "Open Existing Class" button you can browse your folders to find the classlist folder you wish to open. Open this folder and find the folder named "Teacher". Open the file named class.cls. This file is your class list for the corresponding class.
Opening the Storybook
╖Clicking on the "Go to Storybook" takes you directly to the Main menu for "So WhoÆs Dr. Rabbit?"
Picture Saving/Printing
╖You control the printing and saving of your students' artwork and activity sheets. Clicking on this feature allows you to set picture saving and turn the printing of activity sheets and work created on the color palette on or off.
╖These settings are specific for the current open class list. For example, you may choose to have one class's work saved/printed, and perhaps turn this option off for another class.
╖Those activities that are printable show a print button so the children will know that itÆs printable. If you choose to disable printing, the print button will not work. Also, for your reference, those activities and take-homes that are printable are designated in the activity description in this manual.
╖We encourage you to allow the students to print as much of their work as they would like. However, this may not be practical in your setting. You may wish to restrict student access to printing and saving if:
your hard drive doesnÆt have room on it to store additional files
you do not have an accessible printer, or your printer is slow
╖If you are working on a PC, the student work will be printed on your default printer (LPT1). If you are working on a Mac 68040 or PowerPC, student work will be printed on the printer selected in your "Chooser".
2. Activity Log
This file provides information about each of the students work sessions. Here you can monitor what students are completing.
Information included in the log:
╖Name of the Activity/Page number
╖Date/Time and length of student's work session shown in minutes.
╖Number of printouts made
You can click on the title of any of these categories to view the information. For example, clicking on the number of printouts will give a complete list of all printouts made by that student. Selecting the category will sort student information by that category.
3. Student Folders
This file folder contains a file folder for each student.
╖Whenever a student uses the CD, the activity sheets can be saved into his or her own folder. This includes artwork, writing samples, and interactive activity sheets. Each studentÆs folder contains a list of the work in the folder. (Note: Be sure to remind your students to save their work!)
╖The student folders are great for use at Parent/Teacher conferences to review student work, you may either sit at the computer with the parents, or print out their childÆs saved work to share with them.
╖You may double-click on the name of any activity sheet saved in the folder to review it.
4. Teacher Comments
This is where you can make your own comments concerning the student's performance, a specific activity sheet, or any other topic. Comments can be sorted by date or subject.
╖Use this area as a journal to make the notes that you want to later discuss with the child or at parent/teacher conferences.
╖Double-clicking on any of the items in the list of teacher's comments opens up a window giving the text of the comment, so you can update it or remove with the Remove Comment button.
Teacher Comments Menu:
╖"Add Comment" brings up a window for you to enter the subject and main text of the comment.
╖"Remove Comment" removes the currently selected comment from the list. This is helpful if you've discussed a comment with a student and no longer need to save it.
╖"Sort Comments" enables you to sort comments by either subject or date by clicking on either column heading.

Using the CD-ROM with your Curriculum
Introduction:
Welcome to So WhoÆs Dr. Rabbit? Virtual Mystery CD-ROM«! ItÆs the newest component in the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures oral health education program. ItÆs full of developmentally appropriate learning activities for children to explore in class, in the computer lab, or even at home!
╖ So WhoÆs Dr. Rabbit? Virtual Mystery CD-ROM« brings to life a storybook written by Patricia McKissack (a Caldecott book award winner) and Roberta Duyff, illustrated by Diane Paterson. It features interactive activities that support a variety of curricular areas and oral health learnings while stimulating creative and analytical thinking.
╖This TeacherÆs Manual includes information to help you utilize this disk and its activities as a curriculum-based teaching tool, even if youÆve never used a CD-ROM disk before!
╖As you become familiar with the CD-ROM and its many activities, you will discover a host of ways to use this disk as reinforcement to your in-class curriculum. By reading and exploring the activities on the So WhoÆs Dr. Rabbit? CD-ROM, students will gain knowledge in a variety of curriculum areas and learn more about oral health.

╖Exhibit positive self-esteem by taking control of his or her own oral health.
╖Demonstrate positive decision-making to protect teeth and mouth during sports and other activities.
╖Understand that brushing thoroughly with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, especially after eating and before bedtime, helps keep teeth healthy and cavity-free.
╖Understand the roles of plaque and sweet or starchy foods in the process of tooth decay.
