  3. This is the README.TXT file distributed with Icon
  4. Manager version 3.3.
  5.  
  6. OVERVIEW
  7. --------
  8. Icon Manager is a powerful tool for working with
  9. icons in the Windows operating environment.  The
  10. same drag-and-drop interface used by Program Manager
  11. allows icons to easily be moved, copied, and organ-
  12. ized into files within Icon Manager.  Unlike other
  13. applications which offer awkward procedures for
  14. installing icons into Program Manager, Icon Manager
  15. will install icons into Program Manager or Norton
  16. Desktop DIRECTLY using the wizardry of Windows'
  17. Dynamic Data Exchange.  For those who would like
  18. to create or edit their own icons, Icon Manager
  19. taps the power of OLE to whisk you into a edit
  20. session with Paintbrush by just double-clicking on
  21. an icon.  All of these features and more make
  22. Icon Manager the most complete icon tool available
  23. for the Windows operating environment.  (A 32-bit
  24. version of Icon Manager has already won first place
  25. in its class in the Microsoft Windows NT Shareware
  26. Contest during Fall Comdex '92).

  28. REGISTRATION
  29. ------------
  30. Icon Manager is not free software.  It is released
  31. as shareware, which provides the opportunity for
  32. the program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  33. Complete information on how to register Icon Manager
  34. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.
  35.  
  36. DOCUMENTATION
  37. -------------
  38. Icon Manager includes on-line help that covers all
  39. aspects of program operation.  Some customers have
  40. asked why Icon Manager does not come with an oper-
  41. ations manual.  The main reason for this is that
  42. since the first release of Icon Manager in 1990,
  43. Impact Software has never asked registered users
  44. for an upgrade fee.  New versions that users
  45. acquire from their shareware channel continue to
  46. honor earlier registrations.  By including on-line
  47. help with each release, we are able to provide up-
  48. to-date information for new and old customers
  49. alike.
  50.  
  51. This is not intended to suggest that upgrade
  52. version will always be free, but rather that
  53. this method of providing documentation makes
  54. it easier for us to provide no-charge updates
  55. when possible.

  57.  
  58. INSTALLING ICON MANAGER
  59. -----------------------
  60. The Icon Manager package includes a graphical Windows
  61. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  62. You should place all of the files included in the package
  63. on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of your hard
  64. drive.
  65.  
  66. SETUP requires about 210K bytes of hard disk space to
  67. complete the installation of Icon Manager.
  68.  
  69. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  70. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter
  71. "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  72. drive/directory that you are installing Icon Manager FROM
  73. (i.e. A:\SETUP).
  74.  
  75. SETUP will prompt for the target directory you would like
  76. to install Icon Manager to on your hard disk.  Accept the
  77. default or enter a directory of your choice.  Select OK
  78. to install Icon Manager.

  81. NEW FEATURES IN THE 3.2 RELEASE OF ICON MANAGER
  82. -----------------------------------------------

  84. The following additions and changes have been added in
  85. the 3.2 release of Icon Manager:
  86.  
  87.   - Icons can now be replaced within Windows program
  88.     files.  Just drag the new icon you would like to
  89.     use over the one you want to replace and drop it!
  90.  
  91.   - The Arrange option on the Window menu now
  92.     cascades to reveal two selections.  Select Align
  93.     Only to perform a normal row and column
  94.     arrangement.  Select Alphabetize to perform an
  95.     alphabetical sort during the arrange.

  98. NEW FEATURES IN THE 3.3 RELEASE OF ICON MANAGER

  101. The following additions and changes have been added in
  102. the 3.3 release of Icon Manager:
  103.  
  104.   - A bug in the "Install Icon" routine would
  105.     sometimes not quite complete the installation
  106.     of an icon into a Program Item for a
  107.     non-Windows application.  This has been
  108.     corrected - icons should install faithfully
  109.     100% of the time.
  110.  
  111.   - Icon Manager has been "fortified" (smile) to
  112.     handle larger volumes of icons than ever before.
  113.     As a result, we have successfully opened the
  114.     more than 4,000 icons contained in the ALLICON
  115.     collection IN ONE WINDOW!  The performance of
  116.     this code is only limited by the available
  117.     memory and temporary disk space on your system.

  119.   - Multiple icons may now be selected for a copy or
  120.     move operation.  Depress the SHIFT key while
  121.     selecting icons with the mouse to create a group
  122.     selection.  The Edit menu also contains a new
  123.     entry, "Select All," for quick selection of all
  124.     icons in a window.

  126.   - A status bar has been added to Icon Manager that
  127.     displays the filename of the active window, along
  128.     with a count of the total number of icons in the
  129.     window and the number of icons currently
  130.     selected in the window.

  133. NEW FEATURES IN THE 3.2 RELEASE OF ICON MANAGER

  136. The following additions and changes have been added in
  137. the 3.2 release of Icon Manager:

  156.   - Icon Archive files now store a description for an
  157.     icon.  If you open earlier versions of archive files
  158.     the descriptions will be "(Untitled)".  Icon Manager
  159.     will read old format icon archives.  Their "changed"
  160.     flag will be automatically set when they are opened.
  161.     When you select to save them they will be written in
  162.     the new format.
  163.  
  164.     (Version 3.1a allows icon descriptions to be used in
  165.     icon library files as well.)
  166.  
  167.   - Icon windows act more like Program Manager's.  There
  168.     is a "current selection" for each window.  The icon
  169.     description will be highlighted in archive windows.
  170.     All other windows display a dotted frame around the
  171.     current selection.  Use the mouse or keyboard arrow
  172.     keys to move the icon selection.
  173.  
  174.   - The right mouse button can be clicked on any icon to
  175.     display a popup menu of actions that can be performed
  176.     on the icon.
  177.  
  178.   - Icons can now be edited via an OLE session with
  179.     Windows Paintbrush by double-clicking on them.
  180.  
  181.   - Icons can be installed *directly* into Program Manager
  182.     using the Install Icon function.  A supporting *.ICO
  183.     file is created to be used by Program Manager when (if)
  184.     your video display format changes.  The Reconcile
  185.     Configuration function can be used at any time to cause
  186.     Icon Manager to look for ICO files it created which are
  187.     no longer in use by Program Manager.
  188.  
  189.   - Icon Manager takes advantage of the sound capabilities
  190.     of Windows 3.1.  Select the File.Sound menu option to
  191.     configure your audio preferences.  If you have the
  192.     hardware to play digital *.WAV sounds, you can request
  193.     sound effects associated with the drag and drop as
  194.     well as deletion operations on icons.

  206.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  207.  
  208.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Icon
  209.  Manager on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  210.  whether Icon Manager is suitable for their needs.  The use
  211.  of Icon Manager, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  212.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Icon
  213.  Manager, outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  214.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  215.  strictly prohibited.
  216.  
  217.  A single user license permits a user to use Icon Manager
  218.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  219.  program on different computers, as long as there is NO
  220.  POSSIBILITY of it being used at one location while it is
  221.  being used at another, or on a computer network by more than
  222.  one user at a time.
  223.  
  224.  No one may modify or patch the Icon Manager executable files
  225.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  226.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  227.  
  228.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Icon Manager
  229.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above
  230.  limitations, and also the following:
  231.  
  232.   1)    Icon Manager and all of its release files must be copied
  233.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  234.         this license information.
  235.  
  236.   2)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  237.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  238.  
  239.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  240.            may make Icon Manager available for downloading only as
  241.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  242.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  243.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  244.            charge for the download of Icon Manager.
  245.  
  246.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  247.            the ASP may distribute Icon Manager, subject to the
  248.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  249.            approved vendors may distribute Icon Manager only after
  250.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  251.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  252.            details (enclose your catalog).
  253.  
  254.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the
  255.            Icon Manager diskette to their members, subject to
  256.            the above conditions, without specific permission.
  257.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee
  258.            not to exceed five dollars.
  259.  
  260.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  261.  
  262.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  263.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  264.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  265.   purchase.
  266.  
  267.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  268.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  269.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  270.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  271.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  272.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  273.  
  274.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  275.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  276.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  277.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  278.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  279.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  280.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  281.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  282.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  283.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  284.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  285.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  286.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  287.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  289.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  290.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  291.   contents.

  293.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  294.  
  295.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  296.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
  297.   the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at
