  64. If Microsoft Outlook Express 4.x or 5.x receives an Internet Message 
  65. Access Protocol (IMAP) mail message or a news message with a 
  66. two-digit year as the sent date, the date can be misinterpreted under 
  67. certain conditions. 
  68.  
  69. If the sent date includes a two-digit year that is anything other 
  70. than '99,' Outlook Express uses the current century value. For 
  71. example, if the current year is 2000 and you receive a message using 
  72. the two-digit year '97,' Outlook Express interprets the sent date as
  73. 2097. However, if you receive the two-digit year '99,' and the current
  74. year is a multiple of 100 (for example, 2000), the year is interpreted 
  75. as the current year plus 98 (for example, 2098). 
  76. This scenario occurs when the news server or IMAP server only uses 
  77. a two-digit year date. It is unknown which specific servers fall into
  78. this category, nor how many of them exist.
  79. This issue does not affect message contents. Users will only see that
  80. the date of a news or mail item is incorrectly displayed in their 
  81. Inbox, which subsequently affects sorting by sent date.

  84. 2.0  Updating Your System

  87. There are separate updates for different versions of Outlook Express, 
  88. both of which can also be found at:

  92. The updates discussed here are for Outlook Express for
  93. Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51.

  96. 2.1  Determine the Outlook Express Version
  97. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  99. To determine the Outlook Express version
  100.  
  101.     1. Start Outlook Express.
  102.     2. Click the Help menu, and then click About 
  103.        Microsoft Outlook Express.
  104.     3. In the About Microsoft Outlook Express dialog box, the 
  105.        version number is immediately beneath the words 
  106.        "Outlook Express."
  107.  
  108. The appropriate update is related to this version number, as follows:
  109.  
  110.    * If the version number is 5.00.0913.xxxx, use 
  111.      the update Q237824.exe.  
  112.  
  113.    * If the version number is 4.01.21xx, use
  114.      the update Q237823.exe.   
  115.  
  116.    * If the version number is 4.0.18xx.x, upgrade to Internet Explorer
  117.      and either Outlook Express 4.01 or 5, and then use the 
  118.      appropriate update.

  127. 2.2  Apply the Update to Your System
  128. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  130. After you determine your version of Outlook Express, download
  131. the appropriate update from the Microsoft Windows Technologies
  132. Internet Explorer Web site at:

  136. Each update package contains three update files: MSOErt16.dll, 
  137. IComm16.dll and Readme.txt.
  138.  
  139. To apply the update to your system
  140.  
  141.     1. Run the update (Q237824.exe or Q237823.exe) to extract
  142.        MSOErt16.dll, IComm16.dll and Readme.txt.
  143.  
  144.     2. Unsubscribe to the newsgroups you are already subscribed
  145.        to by doing the following:
  146.  
  147.          a. Run Microsoft Outlook Express.
  148.          b. Click on Tools -> Newsgroups.
  149.          c. Select "Subscribed" Tab.
  150.  
  151.          Note: If needed, please note down the newsgroups you
  152.                are subscribed to, before proceeding.
  153.  
  154.          d. Highlight all newsgroups for each news server and
  155.             click on Unsubscribe.
  156.  
  157.     3. Close all open applications.
  158.  
  159.     4. Verify the location of the existing MSOErt16.dll and
  160.        IComm16.dll. They are typically found in
  161.  
  162.             C:\Winnt\System or C:\Windows\System.
  163.  
  164.     Note: As a precaution, you should back up these files
  165.           before proceeding.
  166.  
  167.     5. Copy the new MSOErt16.dll and IComm16.dll that are
  168.        provided in this update to the location noted in
  169.            Step 4, overwriting the older version of each file.
  170.  
  171.     6. Reboot your system.
  172.  
  173.     7. Run Microsoft Outlook Express and subscribe to the
  174.        newsgroups (noted down during Step 2).
