  6.                                       SDTS Definitions for Spatial 
  7. Objects

  9. The spatial objects in TIGER/Line belong to the "Geometry and 
  10. Topology" (GT) class of objects in SDTS.  The definitions are from 
  11. FIPS Publication 173, SPATIAL DATA TRANSFER STANDARD (SDTS) 
  12. (August 28, 1992) Section 2-2, Classification and Intended Use of 
  13. Objects, pp. 11-20.

  15. *    Node:  "A zero-dimensional object that is a topological               
  16. junction of two or more links or chains, or an end point of a link  
  17. or chain," is a node.
  18.  
  19. *    Entity point:  "A point used for identifying the location of 
  20. point features (or areal features collapsed to a point), such as 
  21. towers, buoys, buildings, places, etc."
  22.  
  23. *    Complete chain:  "A chain [a sequence of non-intersecting 
  24. line segments] that explicitly references left and right polygons 
  25. and start and end nodes."  The shape points combine with the nodes 
  26. to form the segments that make a complete chain.

  28. *    Network chains:  "A chain that explicitly references start     
  29. and end nodes and not left and right polygons."
  30.  
  31. *    GT-polygon:  "An area that is an atomic two-dimensional 
  32. component of a two-dimensional manifold, [which is defined as] one 
  33. and only one planar graph and its two-dimensional objects."  GT-
  34. polygons are elementary polygons that are mutually exclusive and 
  35. completely exhaust the surface.
