  7.        This publication is a preliminary report for 1992 on
  8. commercial and recreational fisheries of the United States with
  9. catches in both the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) and
  10. international waters.  This annual report provides timely answers
  11. to frequently asked questions.

  13. SOURCES OF DATA
  14.  
  15.        Information in this report came from many sources.  Field
  16. offices of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), in
  17. cooperation with various States, collected and compiled data on
  18. U.S. commercial landings and processed fishery products.  The
  19. NMFS field offices compiled data on the foreign catch from
  20. reports submitted by designated foreign officials.  The NMFS
  21. Fisheries Statistics Division in Silver Spring, MD, managed the
  22. collection and compilation of recreational statistics, and
  23. tabulated and prepared all data for publication.  Sources of
  24. other data appearing in this publication are:  U.S. Bureau of the
  25. Census, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S.
  26. Customs Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Department
  27. of Agriculture, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the
  28. United Nations and the countries fishing in the U.S. EEZ.

  30. PRELIMINARY AND FINAL DATA

  32.        Data on U.S. commercial and recreational landings,
  33. employment, prices, and production of processed products are
  34. preliminary for 1992.  Final data will be published in other NMFS
  35. Current Fishery Statistics publications.

  37.        The Fisheries Statistics Division of NMFS takes this
  38. opportunity to thank members of states, industry, and foreign
  39. nations who provided the data that made this publication
  40. possible.

  53.        As in past issues of this publication, the units of
  54. quantity
  55. and value are defined as follows:  U.S. landings are shown in
  56. round weight (mollusk shells excluded), unless otherwise noted;
  57. quantities shown for U.S. imports and exports are in product
  58. weight, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, unless
  59. otherwise noted; the value of the U.S. domestic commercial catch
  60. is exvessel; in the Review Section on important species actual
  61. and deflated exvessel prices are shown.  The deflated value was
  62. computed using the Gross Domestic Products Implicit Price
  63. Deflator; the value for U.S. imports is generally the market
  64. value in the foreign (exporting) country and, therefore, excludes
  65. U.S. import duties, freight charges from the foreign country to
  66. the United States, and insurance; the value for exports is
  67. generally the value at the U.S. port of export, based on the
  68. selling price, including inland freight, insurance, and other
  69. charges.  Countries and territories shown in the U.S. foreign
  70. trade section are established for statistical purposes in the
  71. Tariff Schedules of the United States Annotated (International
  72. Trade Commission) and reported by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.
