  41.        This   document   contains  information  on  HyperWare's:  Shareware 
  42.        License,   product   disclaimer,  additional  license  plans,  order 
  43.        methods,  product  line  brief,  company address, FAX, BBS and voice

  46.        The  balance  of  this  document is an installation and user's guide 
  47.        for the HyperKey product. It outlines the procedure  for  installing
  48.        HyperKey,  and  includes additional information for customization.

  56.        
  57.        This  software  and documentation is protected by both United States 
  58.        copyright  law and international treaty provisions. This "Shareware" 
  59.        version  of  HyperKey is NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN NOR FREE SOFTWARE. Users 
  60.        are  granted  a  limited  license to make and use an evaluation copy 
  61.        for  trial use on a private, non-commercial, non-governmental basis, 
  62.        for   the  express  purpose  of  determining  whether  HyperKey  is 
  63.        suitable  for  their  needs.  At  the  end  of this trial period you 
  64.        should   either   register   with  HyperWare  or  discontinue  using 
  65.        the software.

  87.        refund problems.

  89.        How  long is the trial period?  You should be able to determine that 
  90.        HyperKey  meets your needs within 3 months. If you require a longer 
  91.        period,  please  consider your motives: a registered license is very 
  92.        inexpensive. This is a great offer, there is no need to abuse it.

  272.               Introduction to HyperKey
  273.  
  274. HyperKey boosts performance of your PC by enhancing your
  275. keyboard. It gives you complete control over your keyboard's
  276. Typematic functions, providing Type Ahead Buffering,
  277. Typematic Pacing for instant stops while scrolling or repeating,
  278. Clicks for silent keyboards, Touch Shifting, and more.

  281. HyperKey versus BIOS
  282.  
  283. Your PC has a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) that
  284. normally controls your keyboard functions. BIOS does very
  285. little to provide support for many windowing and scrolling type
  286. applications common in today's PC systems. Both the Delay to
  287. Repeat (Typematic Delay) and the Period of Repeat
  288. (Typematic Rate) are slow and cumbersome. Although PC
  289. BIOS provides a Type Ahead feature, it is a scant 15
  290. characters. Type Ahead buffering can be both an advantage
  291. and a disadvantage. If you are waiting for a slow program to
  292. request more input, you may enter it before you are prompted,
  293. saving time when the program needs your input. However,
  294. when you are scrolling or repeating some keystroke, Type
  295. Ahead causes you to overshoot your target and then beeps
  296. incessantly as your application complains that you have
  297. exceeded its limits.
  298.  
  299. HyperKey addresses all these problems. You may set the
  300. Typematic Delay and Typematic Period to any values. Type
  301. Ahead buffering provides 128 keystrokes and does not fill with
  302. repeated keys as BIOS does. The Typematic Period is paced to
  303. match your application's needs and will never overshoot or get
  304. ahead of your application. In summary, HyperKey allows your
  305. PC Keyboard to excel in speed and performance.
  306.  
  307.                       Chapter 2
  308.                  Installing HyperKey
  309.  
  310. This chapter contains both the automatic and manual
  311. procedures for installing HyperKey. Before you actually install
  312. HyperKey on your system, read all of Part II of this manual
  313. and any READTHIS files on the disk.
  314.  
  315. To install HyperKey, you will need:
  316.  
  317. 1)    One of the following computer types: IBM PC, XT, AT,
  318.       Portable, PS/2 etc.; Compaq Portable, DeskPro,
  319.       DeskPro II, etc.; or any other 100% IBM-compatible. If
  320.       you have a near-compatible, you may be able to use
  321.       HyperKey, but you should follow the more cautious
  322.       installation procedure outlined in Appendix A.
  323.   
  324. 2)    Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system, or 100%
  325.       compatible; versions 2.0 through 4.0 are acceptable.
  326.

  328.  
  329. Backup Your System
  330.  
  331. It is a good idea to backup your hard disk before installing any
  332. new program. This is especially true if you have a particularly
  333. complex or non-standard system.
  334.  
  335.  
  336. The Install Program: INST_KEY.EXE
  337.  
  338. To install HyperKey on your hard disk, run the
  339. INST_KEY.EXE program. Place a backup of the HyperKey
  340. floppy in Drive A: and type the following:
  341.  
  342.       A:INST_KEY<Enter>
  343.  
  344. Note: <Enter> means that you press the <Enter> key.
  345.  
  346. 1.    You will first be asked if you want to install
  347.       HyperKey. If you have a complete system backup,
  348.       enter "Y". Note: When INST_KEY prompts you
  349.       for a response, enter only the first letter of your
  350.       choice.
  351.  
  352. 2.    Verify that your HyperKey floppy is in Drive A: and
  353.       proceed with the installation by pressing the Space Bar.
  354.  
  355. 3.    You will be asked whether you want to install HyperKey
  356.       as a device driver or as a TSR. We recommend the
  357.       device driver method, which will use less Conventional
  358.       memory. If you have DOS version 2.xx, you must use the
  359.       TSR version.
  360.  
  361. 4.    Enter the letter of the disk drive where you plan to
  362.       keep the HyperKey files. This will typically be Drive C:,
  363.       but your configuration may differ.
  364.  
  365. 5.    You may now specify any HyperKey options. Please
  366.       refer to Part III, Chapter 3, "HyperKey Parameters,"
  367.       before making selections.
  368.  
  369. 6.    Reboot your computer to complete installation of
  370.       HyperKey: simultaneously press <Ctrl><Alt><Del>.

  373. Manual Installation
  374.  
  375. For users who are familiar with the DOS operating system, this
  376. section provides a quick review of procedures to manually
  377. install HyperKey.
  378.  
  379. HyperKey may be installed as an MS-DOS Device Driver or as
  380. a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program. Most
  381. commonly, HyperKey may be installed as a device driver, but
  382. for some near compatibles it may be necessary to install
  383. HyperKey after some other TSR that makes your system
  384. keyboard IBM compatible. If you choose the device driver
  385. method, you must include the HyperKey specification in your
  386. CONFIG.SYS file. Use a text editor to update the
  387. CONFIG.SYS file on your boot drive root directory.
  388.  
  389. The HyperKey device driver definition is normally before any
  390. other device driver definition, as in the following example:

  407. If you choose the TSR method, you also may run hyperkey.exe
  408. at the DOS Command prompt; alternatively, you may place the
  409. hyperkey.exe specification in your AUTOEXEC.BAT system
  410. file on your boot directory.

  417.                  HyperKey Parameters
  418.  
  419. You control the operating characteristics of HyperKey via the
  420. command line parameters you specify in your CONFIG.SYS or
  421. AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  422.  
  423. Parameter  Definition
  424.  
  425. D:nn       TYPEMATIC DELAY
  426.            Sets the delay time before the key repeats itself,
  427.            starting from when you hold down the key, until
  428.            repetition begins. Start with a value of 350. Units
  429.            are in milliseconds.
  430.  
  431. R:nn       TYPEMATIC PERIOD
  432.            Sets the minimum time between repeats of a key
  433.            after the initial Typematic Delay. Smaller values
  434.            repeat faster, larger values repeat more slowly.
  435.            Start with a value of 30. Units in milliseconds.
  436.  
  437. P:nn       TYPEMATIC PITCH
  438.            Allows you to decrease the TYPEMATIC
  439.            PERIOD automatically after each repeated key.
  440.            The value nn is subtracted from the repeat period
  441.            after each repeated key. Default is 500. Units are
  442.            in microseconds.
  443.   
  444. S:nn       TYPEMATIC SPAN
  445.            Sets the number of repeat characters to be
  446.            affected by the TYPEMATIC PITCH control.
  447.            For example, if you select a TYPEMATIC
  448.            PITCH of 500 and a TYPEMATIC SPAN of 10,
  449.            each of the first 10 repeated keys will repeat
  450.            faster than the previous one by 500 microseconds
  451.            (1/2 millisecond), then remain constant for all
  452.            keys thereafter. Default is 0 (disabled).
  453.  
  454. H:nn       SPAN HOLDOFF
  455.            Allows you to delay the initial effects of
  456.            Typematic Span function. The repeat period will
  457.            remain constant for nn characters before the
  458.            Span functions begin to decrease the period
  459.            (increase the rate of repeats). For example, you
  460.            have set the SPAN to 30 and the PITCH to 500,
  461.            and now you want the first 5 characters to repeat
  462.            without increasing the rate. You set the SPAN
  463.            HOLDOFF to 5. Default is zero.   
  464.  
  465. B:b        EXTENDED BUFFERING
  466.            Enables HyperKey's Type Ahead buffer. B or 
  467.            B:+ to enable; B:- to disable. Default is enabled.
  468.            Note: If after installing other enhancement
  469.            products, you get two or more keys delivered for
  470.            each key you strike, disable this option.
  471.  
  472.  
  473. B:nn       EXTENDED BUFFER SIZE
  474.            During installation, the size of the extended
  475.            keystroke may be specified. Values for nn may
  476.            range from 16 to 4096. Two bytes are required
  477.            for each keystroke. Default is 128. 
  478.  
  479. I          KEYBOARD LOCK INDICATORS
  480.            Changes the Keyboard Lock Indicators, such as
  481.            CapsLock and NumLock. Use the first letter of
  482.            the indicator name, UPPER-CASE sets the
  483.            indicator, lower-case clears the indicator.
  484.            Indicators are CAPSLOCK, NUMLOCK,
  485.            SCROLLLOCK and INSERTSTATE. Example: 
  486.  
  487.       d:>HyperKey -ICNSI ;Sets all indicators.
  488.       d:>HyperKey -ICn   ;Sets CAPSLOCK,
  489.                             clears NUMLOCK.
  490.       
  491.  
  492.            Some computers do not accept indicator changes
  493.            by device drivers, therefore you may need to
  494.            execute Hyperkey during AUTOEXEC.BAT
  495.            initialization to change the indicators after
  496.            BOOTING the machine.
  497.  
  498. A:b        ACTIVE
  499.            Enables all HyperKey functions. A:+ to enable;
  500.            A:- to disable. If you discover one of your
  501.            programs is incomputable with HyperKey, you
  502.            may disable it during that program's use.
  503.  
  504. C:b        CLICK ON MAKE
  505.            Issues a "Click" when a new Key is Struck. Enter
  506.            C or C:+ to enable Clicks; C:- to disable. Default
  507.            is disabled.
  508.  
  509. C:nn       CLICK PITCH
  510.            Sets the "Pitch of the Click". This function is
  511.            machine speed dependent. Experiment to create
  512.            the sound you find most pleasing. Default is 100.
  513.  
  514. CR:b       CLICK ON REPEATS
  515.            Issues a "Click" on ALL Keys, new and repeated.
  516.            CR:+ to enable; C:-to disable. Default is
  517.            disabled.
  518.  
  519. L:n        CLICK PERIOD
  520.            Sets length of time the "Click" sounds. Parameter
  521.            is machine speed dependent. Experiment to find
  522.            a pleasing value. Default is 32.
  523.  
  524.  
  525. T:b        TOUCH SHIFTING
  526.            Sets touch shifting mode. Allows you to enter a
  527.            shifted keys combination serially. For example, to
  528.            enter <Ctrl><F1>, simply press the <Ctrl> key
  529.            and release, then press the <F1> key and
  530.            release. Directly speaking, Touch Shifting
  531.            converts serial keying combinations to the
  532.            equivalent parallel keying operation. Touch
  533.            Shifting is very useful for 101 and 102 key
  534.            Keyboards. T or T:+ to enable; T:- to disable.
  535.            Default is disabled.
  536.  
  537. OK         OVERRIDE DISPLAY METHOD
  538.            Allows you to select the display method.
  539.            HyperKey normally displays data directly via the
  540.            Video BIOS. OK or OK:+ forces I/O directly to
  541.            the Video BIOS, while OK:- forces DOS I/O.
  542.            Alternatively, the standard output device may be
  543.            redirected to any device or file. Default is direct
  544.            to Video BIOS. In the following example,
  545.            HyperKey will display the report via DOS
  546.            Standard Output device.

  555. OK:nn      OVERRIDE COLORS/ATTRIBUTES
  556.            Allows you to select the Colors/Attributes for the
  557.            Current Display. Color displays provide 16
  558.            foreground (text) colors to be applied on either
  559.            8 (CGA) or 16 (EGA/VGA) background colors.
  560.            Monochrome displays provide a variety of display
  561.            attributes; some allow two or more intensities,
  562.            underlining, blinking, etc. For CGA displays there
  563.            are 120 useful combinations and for EGA/VGA
  564.            displays 240. Monochrome displays vary and are
  565.            generally less than CGA. Value nn may be
  566.            entered in either decimal or hexadecimal formats.

  583. OKC:nn     OVERRIDE COLORS ONLY
  584.            Same as OK:nn, except only Color Display
  585.            attributes are affected. Useful for systems with
  586.            both monochrome and color displays.

  588. OKM:nn     OVERRIDE ATTRIBUTES ONLY

  695.           Installation of Near Compatibles
  696.  
  697. For near compatibles, follow this procedure to test installation:

  699. 1.    Make a complete backup of your hard disk, if you have
  700.       one.
  701.  
  702. 2.    Put a copy of hyperkey.exe on newly formatted floppy
  703.       diskette.
  704.  
  705. 3.    With the Diskette in drive A, enter at the DOS Prompt: 
  706.       
  707.            A:>hyperkey
  708.  
  709. 4.    If everything functions normally, your compatible is
  710.       "near" enough to install HyperKey on your hard disk. 
  711.  
  712. 5.    If your near compatible requires that either a device
  713.       drive or TSR be installed to emulate IBM BIOS
  714.       functions, specify HyperKey immediately after the BIOS
  715.       Emulator.
  716.  
  717. 6.    If after you have installed HyperKey (specified in either
  718.       the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files) you
  719.       discover some problems, you can reboot the computer
  720.       and abort the installation of HyperKey by holding the
  721.       <Ctrl> <Left Shift> and <Alt> keys. For most
  722.       systems you must wait to depress these keys until the
  723.       system has finished initializing the keyboard, but before
  724.       the system begins reading the operating system device
  725.       drivers from the disk (or diskette). Generally, you can
  726.       depress the shifts keys when the disk or diskette (lights)
  727.       becomes active.
