- Both snow and ice on the roadways, and extremely cold temperatures
- can provide drivers with tricky road situations in winter. To avoid
- problems associated with winter weather, adhere to the following
- safety tips:
-
- 1. Be sure to winterize your car before the onset of wintry weather in
- your part of the country. Check your oil and replace your car's
- antifreeze. Be sure the heater, brakes and windshield wipers
- are in good working order. If you live in a snowy area, have snow
- tires put on you car.
-
- 2. Never drive with your fuel gauge on empty during the winter months. It is easy to become lost and disoriented when walking in windswept,
- heavy snow. If your car's gas tank is full, you cut down on the
- chances that you will have to brave winter's weather on foot.
-
- 3. If you become stranded, stay in your car and wait for help to arrive.
- If you become cold, use you car heater sparingly, with plenty of
- ventilation. If you are stranded at night, keep the inside light on in
- your vehicle to attract help. It is also important to keep awake in
- cold temperatures and to move your arms and legs frequently to
- keep circulation going.
-
- 4. It does not take much snow on the roadway to make driving
- conditions hazardous. Sometimes, snow that has fallen at night or
- in the early morning hours will melt as temperatures rise above
- freezing during the day, only to refreeze as glazed ice on the
- roadways once temperatures go down below freezing after sunset.
-
- WINTER STORM CAR KITS
-
- If you live in an area that experiences severe winter weather conditions
- on a frequent basis, or will be driving through one, it is wise to put
- together a winter storm kit to keep inside your vehicle.
-
- Below is a list of items that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
- Administration ( NOAA ) outlines as important to keeping safe should
- you and your vehicle become stranded in a wintry weather situation:
-
- 1. Extra layers of loose-fitting clothing, blankets or sleeping bags to
- keep your body warm.
-
- 2. Non-perishable food items and jugs of water.
-
- 3. A flashlight and an additional set of brand new batteries.
-
- 4. A pack of matches.
-
- 5. An ice scraper, jumper cable and chains.
