Winter storms are hazardous events while they are happening and can present problems for days after they have passed through an area. Cold temperatures can be made worse by the effects of wind chill on the body. Keep safe during winter weather, follow these safety tips:
1. It is advisable to stay inside during a winter storm or during times when temperatures are bitterly cold. If you must go out, you should wear several layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing. Wear a hat or a hooded jacket to keep heat from escaping from your body, and cover your face with a scarf to protect your skin and lungs from the cold. Socks, warm winter boots, and gloves or mittens should be worn to protect your extremities from frostbite.
2. The effects of a winter storm can last for days at a time. When a winter storm is expected to hit your area, be sure that you have plenty of food in your home. Stock foods that do not require either cooking or refrigeration in case of power failure.
3. If you heat your home with oil, check fuel levels. Fuel trucks sometimes cannot make their usual deliveries after a winter storm. If you have a fireplace, you may want to have a supply of dry wood handy.
4. Check the batteries in your flashlight and portable radio before the storm. You may need to rely on these items if electricity goes out.
5. Watch The Weather Channel and your local broadcast stations, or listen to your radio for winter storm updates before, during and after the storm hits.
