Watches associated with flash flooding can often be put into effect for as long as 12 hours while heavy rain continues to move into a state.
Flash flood warnings are issued by the National Weather Service when conditions for flash flooding are imminent. You should evacuate the area immediately if you live or work near a stream, river, or other low-lying area susceptible to flash flooding.
FLASH FLOOD SAFETY RULES
The dangers associated with flash floods can sometimes be quite deceiving. Often, people do not understand the tremendous physical force of raging water and find themselves in perilous situations because of it. Below are safety rules you should follow if your area is under a flash flood watch or warning.
1. Flash flood water moves very quickly! If you live or work in a low-lying area that is susceptible to floods, listen for updated flash flood reports and be prepared to immediately move to higher ground should a warning be issued.
2. Most deaths in flash floods are caused by motorists driving across flooded roadways. The depth and speed associated with moving water can be seriously misjudged, carrying the car, driver and passengers down swift-moving currents and into deeper water. Be especially wary of water-covered roads near streams, rivers and bayous and when driving across bridges.
3. Neighborhood drainage systems can sometimes become overpowered by the volume of water racing down paved streets in subdivisions during periods of heavy rainfall. Individuals have been swept into drainage systems while attempting to cross flooded streets. Keep in mind that you are no match for quickly moving waters and wait for the water to subside before walking on or crossing a flooded street.
