- Hurricane Andrew was the costliest natural disaster in United States
- history. Over $25 billion in damage was reported.
-
- Andrew began as a traditional Cape Verde storm in early August but
- did not approach hurricane strength until it reached the western
- Atlantic Ocean. The storm turned to the northwest before reaching
- Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. There would be no interludes with land
- to weaken the hurricane before it made landfall in the United States.
-
- Andrew turned to the west just north of 25 degrees north latitude and
- followed that path toward Miami, Florida.
-
- Andrew made landfall about 5:00 a.m. Monday, September 24, 1992
- in Biscayne Bay south of Miami.
-
- Devastation from the hurricane was immense. Had the eye of the
- hurricane passed 20 miles to the north, advancing over downtown
- Miami, the damage would have been unimaginable.
-
- Wind gusts at the National Hurricane Center ( NHC ) exceeded
- 160 miles per hour. Later damage estimates indicated that some
- wind gusts may have been between 180 and 190 miles per hour.
- Because of deep water just offshore, the storm surge isn't typically as
- high in south Florida as on the Gulf coast. Still, storm surge estimates
- were in excess of 17 feet.
-
- Andrew's energy was contained in its tight eye wall that confined the
- most severe damage to a swath only 30 miles wide.
