Camille was the most powerful hurricane to hit the United States coast in the last 50 years. Hurricane Camille destroyed $1 billion worth of coastal property. 141 people died along the coast. Most drowned in a flood flood of seawater caused by Camille's record 24 and a half foot storm surge.
