IMPORTANT: THIS OPTION WILL DELETE THE

The controller performs calibration.
You must touch two points on the screen as
they appear (one in the bottom left, and one
in the top right).

The controller uses data from these touches
to establish the usable area of the touch
screen.

The calibrated area is stored in EEPROM on
the controller. Hence, this calibration is
non-volatile (that is, when the system is
switched off, the calibration is not lost).

Color Bars

Used for checking the color purity of
the display.

Lets you test the video output of the
monitor.  This option does not test the
touch screen.

When you select the Color Bars option,
Microcal displays 16 bars that span the
color spectrum from black to white. When
examining colors, check the following items:

  -- Look at each color. Check that each color
     matches the description below the bar.

  -- Look at the edges of the color bar. Check
     that a color does not bleed at the edge
     or spread into other colors.

  -- Use the left and right arrow keys to
     change the color of the border around
     the edge of the screen.

If you notice problems, try adjusting the
contrast and brightness controls on the
monitor. These controls help optimize color
convergence.

If there are still problems with the video,
you can continue to troubleshoot the problem
by using the Color Purity option. Remember
that a bad video indicates a hardware problem
with the monitor, not the touch screen.

Color Purity

Lets you test the video output of the
monitor. This option does not test the

Every monitor has three electron guns (or
signals) that send the primary colors -
red, green, and blue - to the screen.
The Color Purity option lets you test that
each electron gun works properly. You can
test each primary color individually. You
can also test combinations of these colors
to produce the same 16 colors shown in the
Color Bars options.

The advantage of the Color Purity option is
that the color fills the screen. You can
check a color for consistent appearance and
saturation across the screen.

To toggle a color gun on or off, press the
appropriate number key (1, 2, or 3). Turn
on combinations of color guns to produce
different colors. To toggle the intensity of
a color, press 4.

When viewing a color with the Color Purity
option, look for the color to be uniform
across all areas of the screen. Shading,
shadows, and distortion in the color indicate
there may be problems with the video.

F4 - Terminal

Send RS-232 data directly to the touch screen.

Use the keyboard to enter the characters to
be sent to the touch screen. The system
displays characters that you enter using the
keyboard on the left.  The system displays
all responses and touch coordinate information
on the right.

The Terminal utility allows you to enter touch
screen commands directly via the keyboard.

When you enter a character, the utility
displays it on the left half of the terminal
screen.  It then transmits the character to
the touch screen at the displayed
communications rate.

The system displays any touch screen responses
or touch coordinate responses on the right
half of the screen.

Characters with an ASCII value of less then
32 or greater than 127 will be displayed and
will appear as the shapes documented by IBM.
It may be useful to obtain a copy of the IBM
character set.

The utility does not display Carriage Return
and Line Feed characters, but will move the
cursor. Carriage Return will also cause a
line feed.

Microcal is a program designed to allow you
to calibrate and test monitors fitted with
MicroTouch touch screens.

With Microcal you can

  -- Calibrate the touch screen controller to
     your own requirements.

  -- Perform more detailed tests on the
     accuracy of operation of your touch
     screen.

  Screen Layout
──────────────────────────────────────────────

The Microcal screen has three distinct areas:

  1. Menu.  The current menu of options is
     shown on the left of the display.

  2. Status.  The status box shows the current
     RS-232 settings, and the reset status of
     the touch screen. The current screen mode,
     video card detected, and help level are
     also shown.

  3. Function Key Line.  This line appears at
     the very bottom of the screen, and shows
     the various function keys available.

  Using Microcal
──────────────────────────────────────────────

To select a menu option, use the cursor up and
down arrow keys to highlight an option. After
you highlight the option, press Enter to select
the option.

When the function key line is shown at the
bottom of the screen, you can press a function
key instead of selecting a menu option.

To exit from any option or menu, press Esc. The
system always prompts for confirmation before
exiting from the Microcal utility.

  Help
──────────────────────────────────────────────

A comprehensive on-line help facility is
included in Microcal. You can get help in two
ways:

  1. Help index. To display an index of
     all help subjects available, press '?'.
     Use the cursor arrow keys to highlight
     the topic you want, and then press Enter.

  2. Context sensitive help. To get help
     about an option on a menu, use the
     cursor arrow keys to highlight the
     menu option, and then press the 'F1'
     or 'H' key. The system displays help
     information for the currently selected
     menu option.

To select the level of help displayed, press
'F2' (Help Level). Three levels of help are
available:

Status Box

The Status box contains three sections:

  1. Touch Screen Status:  The top portion
     of the status box shows the
     controller's output identity, hardware
     version, firmware version, and results
     of the self-test.

  2. Communication Settings: The middle
     portion of the Status box shows the
     current communication port and IRQ,
     communication rate (baud), and data
     format (parity, data bits, stop bit)
     being used by the touch controller.

     These parameters indicate the working
     parameters of your touch screen.

  3. Display Information and Help Level:
     The bottom portion of the Status box
     shows the video card detected, the
     current video mode, and the current
     help level.

     Note that if you change the display mode,
     be sure to calibrate the touch screen
     because the display area is different in
     each mode.
