How to Get Technical Support
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before attempting to install the Ether16 LAN Card's network software
drivers, you should configure the card's internal settings with the
SETUP utility included on the Ether16 disk. To configure the card:
1. Get to the DOS command prompt (C:\>).
It is important that you have a "clean bootup" with no
network drivers loaded. If possible, bypass all of your
system's startup files and get to a DOS prompt.
If you are using Windows, close it down completely (select
File, then Exit from the Program Manager menu). Do NOT
run the Setup program from within a DOS window.
If you are using Windows 95, restart your PC. Hit the F8 key
when "Starting Windows 95..." appears on your screen. Select
"Command Prompt Only" from the menu that appears. When your
system continues booting again, press the F5 key to bypass all of
your startup files.
2. Insert the Ether16 disk into drive A: or B:. Then, from the
DOS prompt, type A:SETUP or B:SETUP and press the Enter key.
3. Select "Configure the Ether16 LAN Card Hardware" option from
the menu. Configure the card's I/O, IRQ, and connector type
settings (you can use the auto configure function if you want).
When you're finished, restart your computer and follow the
network software driver setup instructions shown below.
Important Note: When you configure the card's hardware, write
down the IRQ and I/O memory address that you use. You'll need
to make sure that your network software is configured so that
it uses these same values before your workstation will be able
to communicate with the network.
4. After the card has been set up, your PC will restart itself.
Connect your network cabling to the card and then run the
Setup program again. Run the Setup program's basic diagnostics
on the card to make sure that the hardware has been installed
correctly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOVELL NE2000 COMPATIBILITY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ether16 LAN Card is 100% Novell NE2000 compatible. If your network
software has a "generic" NE2000 adapter driver, run your network setup
software, select NOVELL NE2000 or a compatible driver from the list of
possible adapters and you're done--you won't need to follow the
instructions below.
To install the Ether16 LAN Card's own drivers (included on the Ether16
disk) -- which may provide better performance in some environments --
follow the instructions for your network software package below.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
DISK ORGANIZATION
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ether16 disk's NDIS files are organized into the following subdirectories:
Directory Contents
-------------- ----------------------------------------------
NDIS\DOS NDIS driver for DOS
NDIS\OS2 NDIS driver for OS/2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows for Workgroups v.3.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Proceed to install Windows for Workgroups. If you already have an
installed Windows for Workgroups, open the Control Panel Window to
change the network settings.
2. When Windows asks for the type of network adapter, it will show a
list of all network adapters supported by Windows. Select 'Unlisted
or Updated Network Adapter'.
3. Windows will ask for an OEMSETUP.INF file. Insert the Ether16
disk into drive A:. Then supply the following pathname:
A:\NDIS\OEMSETUP.INF (and press the Enter key)
4. Select the Ether16 from the list of adapters.
5. Windows may ask you to supply the path of the Ether16's NDIS drivers.
When asked for the pathname, type:
A:\NDIS\DOS (and press the Enter key)
6. Windows will copy the NDIS driver file to your computer and update
the Windows network automatically. Be sure to configure the network
adapter if you are using I/O port or IRQ other than the default.
After installation is completely finished, restart your system for the
updates to take effect.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artisoft's LANtastic
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Version 6.00
------------
1. Go through the LANtastic installation. When you are prompted to
choose the type of network card to install, select
NOVELL NE2000 (or compatible) or NEX016
Follow the rest of the directions in the LANtastic installation and
you will be prompted to reboot your computer. If the installation
doesn't work correctly the first time, the "IRQ" or "IOBASE" settings
in the startnet.bat file probably don't match the settings made in
the Ether16 Setup program.
2. Verify the STARTNET.BAT file.
The STARTNET.BAT loads the network driver and all LANtastic related
files. Make sure that the "NEX000" line's "IRQ" and "IOBASE" settings
match those selected in the Linksys Ether16 LAN Card Setup Program.
3. Once changes have been made, be sure to reboot your computer for
changes to take effect.
Version 5 A\I
-------------
1. Install LANtastic as normal. When prompted for the type of network
adapter to install, choose any adapter from the list.
NOTE: If you have "NDIS SUPPORT" as one of your selections, choose
that selection and follow the Lantastic directions. When asked to
enter the of the NDIS drivers, enter the following:
A:\NDIS\DOS
Follow the rest of the Lantastic instructions and your installation
is complete and you can skip the rest of the steps.
2. Copy the Ether NDIS driver to the LANtastic directory. (Put the
Ether16 disk into drive A and type the following:
COPY A:\NDIS\DOS\ETHER.DOS C:\LANTASTI
at the DOS prompt).
3. Next, add the following statements to your PC's CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\LANTASTI
DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\ETHER.DOS
4. Using a standard text editor, make a file called PROTOCOL.INI. Save
it in the LANTASTI directory, and include all of the following
statements in it:
[PROTMAN]
DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$
DYNAMIC = YES
PRIORITY = AILANBIO
[ETHER]
DRIVERNAME = ETHER$
5. Finally, modify your STARTNET.BAT file:
Change the driver line (the line above the AILANBIO statement) so
t reads as follows:
AI-NDIS BIND_TO=ETHER
6. Save the file and restart your PC. The installation is complete.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
3Com 3+ Open
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Begin by installing 3Com 3+ Open. When asked for the type of adapter
to install, pick 3Com's 3C501 card.
