  7. This file describes how to install the EtherLink PCI NIC in a PC
  8. running Windows NT 4.0 or 3.51. It also describes how to:
  9.  
  10.    Update the network driver and NIC software.
  11.  
  12.    Remove the network driver and NIC software.
  13.  
  14.    Troubleshoot installation problems.
  15.  
  16.    NOTE: For increased performance or if you have a non-Intel-based
  17.          PC, read "Advanced Installation Options" at the end of
  18.          this file.

  20.  
  21. Windows NT 4.0 First-Time Installation
  22. --------------------------------------
  23.  
  24. There are two ways to install the NIC:
  25. 1.  Using the EtherCD.
  26. 2.  Using the Installation Diskettes (created from the EtherCD).
  27.  
  28.  
  29. Using the EtherCD
  30. -----------------
  31. To install the EtherLink NIC in a PC running Windows NT 4.0 using the
  32. EtherCD:
  33.  
  34. 1.  Install the NIC in the PC, as described in the user guide.
  35.  
  36. 2.  Start Windows NT and log in.
  37.  
  38. 3.  Insert the EtherCD into the CD-ROM drive. 
  39.     The 3Com EtherCD Welcome screen appears.  
  40.  
  41. 4.  Click NIC Software.
  42.  
  43. 5.  Click NIC Drivers and Diagnostics.  
  44.  
  45. 6.  Click Install NIC Driver.
  46.  
  47. 7.  Click Install with Diagnostic program to install both the driver and the
  48.     NIC diagnostic program, or click Install without Diagnostic program 
  49.     to install the driver only.
  50.     As soon as you click on the selection, the installation process
  51.     starts.
  52.  
  53. 8.  A message appears stating, "Do you have to install NIC drivers for
  54.     any EtherLink PCI NICs?"  Click Yes.  
  55.     The installer completes and causes the NIC driver to rebind to the
  56.     protocols.  This may cause the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties screen
  57.     to appear.  Complete the TCP/IP Properties page as appropriate for
  58.     your network and click OK.
  59.  
  60. 9.  When the installation is complete, an update dialog box appears.  
  61.     Click OK. 
  62.  
  63.     The installation is complete. 
  64.  
  65. 10. Exit the EtherCD.
  66.     
  67.  
  68. Using the Installation Diskettes
  69. --------------------------------
  70. To install the EtherLink NIC in a PC running Windows NT 4.0 using the
  71. installation diskettes:
  72.  
  73. 1.  Install the NIC in the PC, as described in the user guide.
  74.  
  75. 2.  Start Windows NT.
  76.  
  77. 3.  Double-click the My Computer icon, then the Control Panel icon,
  78.     and then the Network icon.
  79.     The Network window appears.
  80.  
  81. 4.  Click the Adapters tab.
  82.  
  83.     Note:  If networking has not been installed on your PC before, 
  84.            Windows NT asks you if you want to install networking.  
  85.            Click Yes. See the Windows NT documentation for instructions. 
  86.            
  87.            If you have previously installed a Windows NT service pack, 
  88.            you need to reinstall the service pack after the network 
  89.            installation is complete to ensure that the Windows NT network 
  90.            components are updated to the level of the service pack.
  91.  
  92. 5.  Click Add.  The Select Network Adapter dialog box appears.
  93.  
  94. 6.  Click Have Disk.  The Insert Disk dialog box appears.  
  95.  
  96. 7.  Insert EtherDisk diskette 1 in drive A, and then click OK.  
  97.  
  98.     The OEM Option dialog box appears. 
  99.  
  100. 8.  Make sure that the 3Com EtherLink NIC is highlighted, then click OK.
  101.  
  102.     The hour glass appears for a few seconds, and then the Adapters tab 
  103.     of the Network screen reappears. The name of the installed NIC appears 
  104.     in the list of network adapters.
  105.  
  106. 9. Click Close.
  107.     
  108.     If the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties screen appears, enter the
  109.     requested information for your network environment. Refer to 
  110.     your system administrator or the Windows NT documentation for
  111.     assistance.
  112.    
  113.     If the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties screen does not appear, the
  114.     installation is complete.
  115.  
  116. 10. Remove the EtherDisk from the floppy drive, and then shut down 
  117.     and restart the PC.
  118.         
  119.  
  120. Windows NT 3.51 First-Time Installation
  121. ---------------------------------------
  122. To install the EtherLink NIC in a PC running Windows NT 3.51:
  123.  
  124. 1.  Install the NIC in the PC, as described in the user guide.
  125.  
  126. 2.  Start Windows NT.
  127.  
  128. 3.  In the Main window of the Program Manager, double-click the 
  129.     Control Panel icon and then the Network icon.
  130.     The Network Settings window appears.
  131.  
  132.     NOTE:  If you have an existing NIC driver in the Installed Adapters 
  133.            group, highlight it, and then click Remove. Restart the PC
  134.            and go to step 3 after Windows restarts.
  135.  
  136. 4.  Click Add Adapter.
  137.  
  138. 5.  Open the Network Adapter Card list box, and scroll down and select
  139.     <Other> Requires Disk from Manufacturer.  The Insert Disk window
  140.     appears.
  141.  
  142. 6.  Insert the EtherCD into the CD-ROM drive or EtherDisk diskette 1 in 
  143.     drive A.
  144.  
  145. 7.  If you are installing from CD-ROM, enter the drive letter of the CD-ROM
  146.     drive, followed by a colon in the path line.  Click OK.
  147.     If you are installing from diskette, click OK.
  148.  
  149. 8.  The Select OEM Option Window appears.  Make sure that the name '3Com
  150.     EtherLink PCI NIC' is highlighted, then click OK.
  151.  
  152. 9.  The Network Settings window appears. The name of the installed NIC 
  153.     appears in the list of installed adapter cards.  Click OK.
  154.  
  155. 10. The Network Setup configurator runs.  If you are prompted for network 
  156.     information, contact your system administrator for information 
  157.     unique to your network.
  158.  
  159. 11. The Network Settings Change windows appears, prompting for a reboot.
  160.     If you installed from diskette, remove the EtherDisk.  Press 
  161.     Restart Now to shut down and restart the PC.
  162.  
  163.  
  164. Updating the Network Driver and NIC Software
  165. --------------------------------------------
  166. If you are using a version of EtherDisk software that is older
  167. than the software on this EtherCD, follow the instructions
  168. below to properly update the driver and the Windows-based 3Com NIC 
  169. diagnostic software.
  170.  
  171.    Windows NT 4.0
  172.    --------------
  173.    To update EtherDisk software in a PC running Windows NT 4.0:
  174.  
  175.    The EtherCD installation and update technology is significantly
  176.    different then what was available on previous EtherDisks.  For this
  177.    reason, do not use the Update button on the Adapter tab of the 
  178.    Network control panel.  Use one of the two methods below to update 
  179.    the software.
  180.  
  181.    Preferred method:
  182.  
  183.    1.  Insert the EtherCD into the CD-ROM drive after Windows NT starts.  
  184.        This EtherCD Welcome screen appears.
  185.  
  186.    2.  Click NIC Software, NIC Drivers and Diagnostics, and then
  187.        Update NIC driver.
  188.  
  189.    3.  Click Update Drivers and Diagnostic Program to update the network
  190.        driver and NIC diagnostic program, or click Update Drivers and remove
  191.        Diagnostic Program to update the driver only.  
  192.  
  193.        The upgrade begins
  194.  
  195.    4.  The update utility asks 'Do you have to install NIC drivers for
  196.        any EtherLink PCI NICs'?  Click No.  
  197.        The update utility posts a message box that the update has successfully
  198.        completed.  Click OK.
  199.  
  200.    5.  Click Exit on the EtherCD, and then restart the computer.
  201.  
  202.    Alternate method:
  203.  
  204.        Do not use the Update button on the Adapter tab of the Network
  205.        control panel to update the driver and NIC software.  
  206.          
  207.    1.  Double-click the My Computer icon, then the Control Panel icon,
  208.        and then the Network icon.  The Network window appears.
  209.  
  210.    2.  Click the Adapters tab.  
  211.  
  212.    3.  Highlight the 3Com EtherLink NIC, and then click the Remove 
  213.        button.  A warning message will appear.  Click the Yes
  214.        button.
  215.  
  216.    4.  The NIC will disappear from the Adapter window.  Click the 
  217.        Close button.  The bindings review window will appear for
  218.        a few seconds, followed by the Network Settings Change 
  219.        window requesting a reboot.  Click the Yes button.
  220.  
  221.    5.  After the computer reboots, continue at the Windows NT 4.0
  222.        First Time Install procedure above.

  225.    Windows NT 3.51
  226.    ---------------
  227.    To update EtherDisk software in a PC running Windows NT 3.51:
  228.  
  229.    1.  In the Main window of the Program Manager, double-click the 
  230.        Control Panel icon and then the Network icon.
  231.        The Network Settings window appears.
  232.  
  233.    2.  Highlight the 3C90X NIC in the Installed Adapter Cards
  234.        list box.
  235.  
  236.    3.  Click the Update button.
  237.        The Windows NT Setup dialog box appears.
  238.  
  239.    4.  Insert the EtherCD into the CD ROM drive or EtherDisk 
  240.        diskette 1 in drive A.  If you are using EtherCD, enter the
  241.        drive letter followed by a colon in the path box, then click
  242.        the Continue button.
  243.  
  244.    5.  the Network Settings windows reappears.  Click the OK button.
  245.        If you are prompted for network information, contact your system     
  246.        administrator for information unique to your network.
  247.  
  248.    6.  The Network Settings Change windows appears.  If you installed
  249.        using a diskette, remove the EtherDisk, then press the Restart
  250.        Now button.
  251.

  253. Removing the Network Driver and NIC Software
  254. ----------------------------------------------
  255.  
  256.    Windows NT 4.0
  257.    --------------
  258.  
  259.    Preferred Method:
  260.  
  261.    The procedure listed below is appropriate to remove either the 
  262.    Windows diagnostic program or to remove all software for a
  263.    single 3Com NIC.  If you have more than one 3Com NIC installed
  264.    and only want to remove one NIC, then use the Alternate Method
  265.    below.
  266.  
  267.    1.  After the system is booted and you have logged into Windows NT,
  268.        insert the EtherCD.  
  269.  
  270.    2.  Click NIC software, NIC Drivers and Diagnostics, and then  
  271.        Installation Utilities.
  272.  
  273.    3.  At this point, you have the option to just remove the NIC Windows
  274.        Diagnostic or to remove all the NIC support software.  Click 
  275.        Remove Diagnostic to just remove the windows diagnostic program.
  276.        Click Clean Up Failed installation to remove both the drivers and
  277.        Windows diagnostic program.
  278.  
  279.    4.  The next screen explains briefly what is going to happen.  Click
  280.        Proceed.
  281.  
  282.    5.  If you chose 'Clean up failed installation", you will see the 
  283.        bindings process for a few seconds, followed by an Update utility
  284.        message.  Click OK.  Another Update message appears. 
  285.        Click OK.
  286.  
  287.    6.  Exit the EtherCD.  
  288.  
  289.    7.  Reboot the computer to make the configuration changes take effect.
  290.  
  291.    Alternate Method:
  292.  
  293.    To remove the NIC driver and software from a PC running 
  294.    Windows NT 4.0:
  295.  
  296.    1.  Double-click the My Computer icon, then the Control Panel icon,
  297.        and then the Network icon.
  298.        The Network window appears.
  299.  
  300.    2.  Click the Adapters tab.  
  301.  
  302.    3.  Highlight the name of the NIC in the Network Adapters box, and
  303.        then click the Remove button.
  304.  
  305.    4.  Click Yes to confirm the removal.
  306.  
  307.    5.  Click Close to close the Network window.
  308.        You are prompted to restart the PC.
  309.  
  310.        If you are physically removing the NIC from the PC, click No.
  311.        Do not restart the PC until you shut down the PC, turned the
  312.        power off, and removed the NIC from the PC.
  313.  
  314.        If you are reinstalling the NIC software, click Yes to restart
  315.        the PC.
  316.  
  317.    Windows NT 3.51
  318.    ---------------
  319.    To remove the NIC driver and software from a PC running 
  320.    Windows NT 3.51:
  321.  
  322.    1.  In the Main window of the Program Manager, double-click the 
  323.        Control Panel icon and then the Network icon.
  324.        The Network Settings window appears.
  325.  
  326.    2.  Highlight the 3Com EtherLink PCI NIC in the Installed Adapter 
  327.        Cards list box. Click the Remove button. On the Network
  328.        Settings window, confirm the removal by clicking the Yes
  329.        button.
  330.  
  331.    3.  Click Remove.
  332.  
  333.    4.  The Network Settings window appears. The NIC no longer appears
  334.        in the Installed Adapter Cards list box. Click the OK button.
  335.  
  336.    5.  The Network Settings Change window appears.  You are prompted 
  337.        to restart the PC.
  338.  
  339.        If you are physically removing the NIC from the PC, click the
  340.        Don't Restart Now button.  Shut down the PC, turn the power off, 
  341.        and remove the NIC from the PC.
  342.  
  343.        If you are reinstalling the NIC software, click Restart Now 
  344.        to restart the PC.
  345.  
  346.  
  347. Troubleshooting 
  348. ---------------
  349. If  a message appears, stating that Windows NT networking is not installed, 
  350. either it has not been installed or a problem has occurred in changing the 
  351. network settings.  If you have never installed networking on this system, 
  352. proceed to the next section, "Installing Windows NT Networking for the 
  353. First Time." Otherwise, follow the steps below to reinstall Windows NT 
  354. networking.
  355.  
  356.     Reinstalling Windows NT Networking
  357.     ----------------------------------
  358.     NOTE:  This procedure requires Windows NT installation media.
  359.  
  360.     WARNING:  You will lose all network settings when you perform this 
  361.               procedure.
  362.     
  363.     1.  Click No when asked if you wish to install networking.
  364.     
  365.     2.  In the Network Settings window, select each installed component 
  366.         one after the other, and click Remove after each one to uninstall 
  367.         all NICs and software listed in the window.
  368.     
  369.     3.  Click OK after you have been removed all items.
  370.     
  371.     4.  Reboot the PC when prompted.
  372.     
  373.     5.  When Windows NT restarts, go to the Network Control Panel.
  374.         You are asked again if you want to install networking.
  375.     
  376.     6.  In the Network Settings box, click Yes to begin installing 
  377.         Windows NT networking.
  378.     
  379.     7.  Enter the location of the Windows NT installation media.  For 
  380.         example, if your CD-ROM drive is E:, type:
  381.     
  382.         E:\i386
  383.     
  384.     8.  In the NIC Card Detection window, click Do Not Detect.  
  385.     
  386.     9.  In the Add Network NIC window, press and hold the down arrow key 
  387.         until the option <Other> Requires Disk from Manufacturer appears.
  388.     
  389.     10. Insert the EtherCD in the CD ROM drive or EtherDisk 1 diskette 
  390.         into drive A: and press enter.
  391.     
  392.     11. In the Select OEM Option box, select the 3Com EtherLink NIC that
  393.         you are installing.
  394.     
  395.     12. Click OK.
  396.     
  397.     13. Select the network protocols you will be using on the network, and 
  398.         then click Continue.
  399.     
  400.         Consult your system administrator to find out which protocols to 
  401.         select.
  402.     
  403.     14. Click OK in the Network Settings window to accept the choices you 
  404.         have made.
  405.      
  406.     15. Provide additional information, as required, during the network 
  407.         installation process.
  408.     
  409.         Your computer can automatically detect the frame type if needed, 
  410.         but you must obtain IP address and gateway information from your system 
  411.         administrator.
  412.         
  413.     16. Enter the workgroup name or the domain name in the Domain/Workgroup 
  414.         Settings window and click OK.
  415.     
  416.     17. When prompted, restart the PC to finish the installation.
  417.  
  418.     18. If you have installed an NT service pack, you will need to reinstall
  419.         the service pack to make sure the Microsoft network components are
  420.         upgraded to the level of the service pack.
  421.     
  422.     
  423.     Installing Windows NT Networking for the First Time
  424.     ---------------------------------------------------
  425.     If you have never installed networking on this PC, begin at step 5 in 
  426.     "Reinstalling Windows NT Networking."
