  7. This file describes how to install an EtherLink PCI NIC in a PC
  8. running Windows 95 using the EtherCD or installation diskettes. 
  9.  
  10. It also describes how to:
  11.  
  12.    Update the network driver and NIC software.
  13.  
  14.    Remove the network driver and NIC software.
  15.  
  16.    Troubleshoot installation problems.
  17.  
  18.    Use Windows 95 peer-to-peer networking.  
  19.  
  20.    NOTE: For instructions on upgrading a PC from Windows 95 
  21.    to Windows 98 that already has an EtherLink NIC installed, 
  22.    see the WIN98.TXT file located in the Help directory on the
  23.    EtherCD (or in the HELP directory of EtherDisk 2).

  26. First-Time Installation
  27. ------------------------
  28.  
  29. The NDIS 3/4 drivers for Windows 95 are the 32-bit driver versions that 
  30. Windows 95 uses as the default driver.  
  31.  
  32.   EL90XND3.SYS and EL90XBC3.SYS (NDIS 3 driver)
  33.   EL90XND4.SYS and EL90XBC4.SYS (NDIS 4 driver)
  34.  
  35. All versions of the Windows 95 operating system do not have a built-in 
  36. driver for the EtherLink NICs. You must install the latest driver
  37. using the EtherCD (or EtherDisk installation diskettes) that came with the NIC.
  38.  
  39. There are two ways to install the NIC:  
  40.  
  41.   Using the EtherCD
  42.   Using the installation diskettes (created from the EtherCD)
  43.  
  44.  
  45.      Using the EtherCD
  46.      -----------------
  47.  
  48.      NOTE:  This method works only if you install the NIC from the EtherCD.  
  49.             If are using installation diskettes (created using the EtherCD),
  50.             go to the "Using Installation Diskettes" section below.
  51.  
  52.      1.  Do not install the NIC in the PC!  
  53.  
  54.      2.  Insert the EtherCD in the CD ROM drive.  
  55.          The EtherCD Installer runs and the Welcome screen appears.
  56.  
  57.      3.  Click NIC Software
  58.  
  59.      4.  Click NIC Drivers and Diagnostics. 
  60.  
  61.      5.  Click Install NIC Driver.
  62.  
  63.      6.  Click Install with Diagnostic Program to install the network driver
  64.          and the 3Com NIC Diagnostic Program or click Install without 
  65.          Diagnostic program to install the network driver only.  
  66.  
  67.          As soon as you make your choice, the installation occurs. A message
  68.          appears when the installation is complete.
  69.  
  70.      7.  Click OK.
  71.  
  72.      8.  Select the operating system of the PC (Windows 95). 
  73.          The Completing NIC Installation screen appears.
  74.  
  75.      9.  Exit the EtherCD, leave the EtherCD in the CD-ROM drive, and then
  76.          shut down the computer.
  77.  
  78.      10. Install the NIC in the PC and connect it to the network.
  79.          See the user guide or the quick guide that came with the NIC for
  80.          instructions.  
  81.  
  82.      11. Turn the computer on.  
  83.  
  84.          Windows 95 detects the NIC.  The Insert Disk dialog box appears, 
  85.          prompting you for the location of the installation media.  
  86.  
  87.      12. Click OK.  
  88.          The Copying Files ... window appears.  
  89.  
  90.      13. Open the pull-down menu and select: C:\WINDOWS\options\cabs
  91.  
  92.      14. Click OK.  
  93.          Windows 95 installs the 3Com files.  You are prompted for the 
  94.          Windows 95 installation media.  
  95.  
  96.      15. Click OK.
  97.          If you have the Windows 95 CD, remove the EtherCD and
  98.          insert the Windows 95 CD.  
  99.  
  100.          If the Windows 95 installation files are installed on the PC, open the 
  101.          pull-down menu and select the entry that points to the Windows 95 
  102.          installation files.
  103.  
  104.      16. Click OK.  
  105.          Windows 95 installs the network software.
  106.  
  107.          You are prompted to restart the computer. 
  108.  
  109.      17. Click YES.
  110.  
  111.  
  112.      Using the Installation Diskettes
  113.      --------------------------------
  114.  
  115.      1.  Install the NIC in the PC, as described in the quick guide
  116.          or user guide. 
  117.     
  118.      2.  Turn on the power to the PC. 
  119.          Windows 95 detects the NIC.  Depending on the version of Windows 95
  120.          that you have installed, the New Hardware Found dialog box appears
  121.          or the Update Device Driver Wizard starts.
  122.  
  123.          NOTE: If Windows 95 detects the NIC but starts copying files right
  124.           away without prompting you for a diskette, you have an existing 
  125.           version of the driver already installed on your PC.  To update 
  126.           the driver, reboot the PC, and then follow the instructions in 
  127.       the "Updating Software" section below.  
  128.           
  129.           If Windows 95 does not detect the NIC at startup, the PC may 
  130.           have installed a generic "PCI Ethernet Controller" driver 
  131.           (see the "Troubleshooting" section below).  This can happen when 
  132.       Windows 95 is installed with the NIC already in the computer.
  133.           In this case:
  134.  
  135.           a.  Double-click the Add New Hardware icon in the Windows 
  136.               Control Panel.
  137.           b.  Continue to click Next until Windows 95 asks if you want 
  138.               it to search for new hardware.  
  139.           c.  Click No, and then click Next.  
  140.           d.  Choose Network Adapters in the Hardware Types menu, and
  141.               then click Next.  
  142.           e.  Click Have Disk, and insert EtherDisk diskette 1.  Go to
  143.               Step 3 when prompted for EtherDisk diskette 2.
  144.     
  145.      If the New Hardware Found dialog box appears:
  146.      a.  Select Driver from Disk Provided by Hardware Manufacturer,
  147.          and then click OK.    
  148.      b.  Insert EtherDisk diskette 1 (or the EtherCD), and then click OK.
  149.      c.  Go to Step 3.
  150.  
  151.      If the Update Device Driver Wizard starts:
  152.      a.  Insert EtherDisk diskette 1 (or the EtherCD), and 
  153.      then click Next.  
  154.          Windows displays the name of the NIC.
  155.      b.  Click Finish, and then click OK when prompted for the EtherCD or 
  156.      EtherDisk diskette 1.
  157.      c.  Windows 95 prompts for the installation media.  Enter A:\ if you
  158.      are installing from diskette, or the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive
  159.      (usually D:\) if you are installing from CD, then click OK.
  160.  
  161.      d. Go to Step 3.
  162.  
  163.      3.  You are prompted for the Windows 95 installation files.  
  164.  
  165.      4.  Insert the Windows 95 CD, and then click OK.  
  166.          
  167.      5.  Place the path to the Windows 95 installation media in the 
  168.          'Copy files from:' entry box, and then click OK.  
  169.          Windows copies files from the Windows 95 installation media.
  170.  
  171.      6.  Remove the EtherDisk diskette 1 from drive A, and then click Yes to
  172.          restart the PC.
  173.     
  174.      7.  Open the Windows Start menu, select Settings, and then Control Panel. 
  175.  
  176.      8.  Double-click the Network icon.
  177.     
  178.      9.  Examine the Network Configuration.  The default network setup for
  179.          Windows 95 contains the following five components:
  180.  
  181.          Client for Microsoft Network
  182.          Client for NetWare Networks
  183.          3Com EtherLink 10/100Mb Ethernet NIC
  184.          IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol
  185.          NetBEUI
  186.  
  187.     10.  If any of the components are missing and are required for your
  188.          network, add them by clicking the Add button.
  189.  
  190.          To add a protocol:  
  191.          a.  Select the protocol and click Add.
  192.          b.  In the Select Network Protocol window, select the vendor 
  193.              in the left pane (this is usually Microsoft).  In the right 
  194.              pane, select the protocol and click OK.  
  195.  
  196.          To add a client:
  197.          a.  Select the client and click Add.  
  198.          b.  In the Select Network Client window, select Microsoft in the 
  199.              left pane.
  200.          c.  Select the client in the right pane.
  201.          d.  Click OK.  
  202.  
  203.     11. Shut down Windows and reboot the PC.
  204.      
  205.  
  206. Updating the Network Driver and NIC Software
  207. --------------------------------------------
  208.  
  209.   There are two ways to update the network driver and NIC software:
  210.  
  211.   Using the EtherCD
  212.   Using the installation diskettes
  213.  
  214.      Using the EtherCD
  215.      -----------------
  216.      If you are using a version of EtherDisk software that is older 
  217.      than the software on the EtherCD version 5.1, follow the 
  218.      instructions below to properly update the network driver and the 
  219.      Windows-based 3Com NIC Diagnostic program.
  220.  
  221.      Note:  Do not use the "Update Driver" button located on the 
  222.             driver tab of properties page for the NIC.  This button
  223.             updates the device driver only.  It does not update the
  224.             NIC diagnostic software.  It is important to update 
  225.             both the driver and the Windows diagnostic software together.
  226.  
  227.     To update to the EtherCD 5.1 software using the EtherCD:
  228.  
  229.     1.  Insert the EtherCD in the CD ROM drive.  
  230.         The EtherCD Welcome screen appears.
  231.  
  232.     2.  Click NIC Software.  
  233.  
  234.     3.  Click NIC Drivers and Diagnostics.
  235.  
  236.     4.  Click Update NIC Driver.
  237.  
  238.     5.  Click Update Drivers and Diagnostic Program to update the network driver
  239.         and the 3Com NIC Diagnostic program, or click Update Drivers and remove 
  240.         Diagnostic Program to update the network driver only.
  241.   
  242.         The update begins as soon as you click on your selection.  The update is 
  243.         complete when the update message box appears stating that you must restart 
  244.         your system for the changes to take effect.  
  245.  
  246.     6.  Click OK.
  247.   
  248.     7.  Exit the EtherCD, and then restart Windows and the computer.
  249.  
  250.         After the Windows restarts, the EtherCD software is ready to use.
  251.  
  252.  
  253.     Using Installation Diskettes
  254.     ----------------------------
  255.  
  256.     To update to the EtherCD 5.1 software using the installation diskettes:
  257.  
  258.     1.  Delete the NIC, following the instructions in the next section 
  259.         "Removing the NIC Driver and EtherDisk Software."
  260.  
  261.     2.  Install the network driver and NIC software, following the instructions
  262.         in the previous section "Updating the Network Driver and NIC Software
  263.         Using Installation Diskettes."
  264.  
  265.  
  266. Removing the Network Driver and EtherDisk Software
  267. --------------------------------------------------
  268.  
  269. To remove the NIC driver and software:
  270.  
  271. 1.  Double-click the My Computer icon, then the Control Panel icon,
  272.     and then the System icon.
  273.  
  274. 2.  Click the Device Manager tab.
  275.  
  276. 3.  Double-click Network adapters.  
  277.  
  278. 4.  Highlight the 3Com EtherLink NIC.
  279.  
  280. 5.  Click Remove.
  281.  
  282. 6.  Click OK to confirm the device removal.
  283.     You are prompted to restart the PC.
  284.  
  285.     If you are physically removing the NIC from the PC, click No.
  286.     Do not restart the PC until you shut down the PC, turn the
  287.     power off, and remove the NIC from the PC.
  288.  
  289.     If you are reinstalling the NIC software, click Yes to restart
  290.     the PC.
  291.  
  292.  
  293. Troubleshooting Tips
  294. --------------------
  295. 1.  If an error message appears during the installation, stating that 
  296.     the .INF file cannot be found in the specified location, verify 
  297.     that Windows 95 is looking at the correct location. The file 
  298.     should be in the root directory of the 3Com EtherCD (or EtherDisk
  299.     diskette 1).  The filenames are W9XEL90X.INF and W9X90XBC.INF.  If
  300.     you installed using the 3Com EtherCD program, the installation files
  301.     are located in the \WINDOWS\options\cabs subdirectory on the hard
  302.     disk.
  303.  
  304.     If the INF files is missing, download the file from one of
  305.     3Com's download sites (such as the World Wide Web or FTP site), and 
  306.     make sure that you expand it properly. See the SUPPORT.TXT file on this 
  307.     EtherCD (or on EtherDisk diskette 2) for more information.
  308.  
  309. 2.  If Windows 95 does not detect new hardware after you install the NIC
  310.     and power on the PC, the system may have installed a generic "PCI Ethernet
  311.     Controller" driver.  In this case:
  312.  
  313.     a. Double-click on the System icon in the Windows Control Panel.
  314.     b. Select the Device Manager tab.
  315.     c. Under Network adapters, the 3Com EtherLink driver appears with a 
  316.        yellow exclamation in front of it.
  317.     d. Under Other Devices, a PCI Ethernet Controller appears with a 
  318.        question mark in front of it.
  319.     e. Highlight the PCI Ethernet Controller under Other Devices,
  320.        and then click Remove.
  321.     f. Select Yes if prompted to confirm the removal of the device.  
  322.     g. Select No if prompted to restart the PC.
  323.     h. Highlight the 3Com EtherLink NIC under Network adapters,
  324.        and then click Remove.
  325.     i. Select Yes if prompted to confirm removal of this device.  
  326.     j. Select No prompted to restart the PC.
  327.     k. Click OK to save all changes.  
  328.     l. Restart the computer.
  329.  
  330. 3.  To verify that the actual NDIS driver was copied to your Windows 95
  331.     system, compare the date of the driver .SYS file in the 
  332.     directory of your hard drive with the date of the one in the root
  333.     directory of the 3Com EtherCD or EtherDisk diskette 1. The dates 
  334.     should be the same.
  335.

  337. General Overview of Peer-to-Peer Networking
  338. -------------------------------------------
  339. In a peer-to-peer network, a relationship exists between two or more "like"
  340. computers.  Each computer may make portions of its devices (such as disk
  341. drives, CD-ROM drive, and printers) available to other computers on the
  342. network.  You can decide what to make available to other users.  When you
  343. share a disk drive or folder, you also need to decide if you want to grant
  344. other users the right to store and change information on your drive or
  345. folder.
  346.  
  347. The general characteristics of a peer-to-peer network are:
  348.  
  349. The network provides the capability to share resources with any computer on
  350. the network.  When you share resources, your computer acts as a server for
  351. all other computers in the network while still retaining all its capability
  352. for your use.  In a server-based network, only the resources on the
  353. dedicated server can be shared.
  354.  
  355. A peer-to-peer network is more difficult to administer than a server-based
  356. network. Its flexible resource-sharing and lack of central management and
  357. control make management difficult. However, the network works with your 
  358. existing equipment and does not require the purchase of a dedicated server.  
  359. This lowers the cost of networking.
  360.  
  361.  
  362. Peer-to-Peer Networking with Windows 95
  363. ----------------------------------------
  364.  
  365. Microsoft Windows 95 comes with a built-in peer-to-peer network.  It
  366. also supports a wide range of network environments and network software
  367. vendors to work with dedicated networks.
  368.  
  369. To configure Windows 95 for peer-to-peer networking:
  370.  
  371. 1.  Install Windows 95 and the EtherLink NIC.
  372.  
  373. 2.  Configure your network configuration as outlined in the previous 
  374.     instructions in this document.  
  375.  
  376. 3.  Make sure that you have the Microsoft Network client in your 
  377.     network configuration.
  378.  
  379. Before you can share resources on your computer, you need to add file and
  380. print sharing capabilities to your network configuration.  
  381.  
  382. To add file and print sharing capabilities:
  383.  
  384. 1.  Open the Windows Start menu, select Settings, and then select
  385.     Control Panel. 
  386.  
  387. 2.  Double-click the Network icon.
  388.  
  389. 3.  In the Network window, click Add.
  390.  
  391. 4.  Select Service in the list of Network Component Types, and then 
  392.     click Add.
  393.  
  394. 5.  Select Microsoft from the list of manufacturers in the left column.
  395.  
  396. 6.  Select File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks in the right
  397.     column.
  398.  
  399. 7.  Click OK.
  400.     The Network window appears.
  401.  
  402. 8.  Select the Identification tab.
  403.  
  404. 9.  Assign a computer name.
  405.     This computer name identifies your PC on the network. This name
  406.     must be unique.
  407.  
  408. 10. Assign a workgroup name.  
  409.     The workgroup name must be the same for all of the computers on your 
  410.     network with which you want to share information.  More than one 
  411.     workgroup may exist on a network, but members of one workgroup cannot
  412.     directly see members of another workgroup.
  413.  
  414. 11. Assign a computer description.
  415.     The description allows other users in your workgroup to know what is 
  416.     available on your computer (such as a printer or scanner).  
  417.  
  418. 12. Click OK.
  419.     Windows 95 prompts you for the location of the Windows 95 CD-ROM or 
  420.     diskettes containing the files needed for sharing.  
  421.     
  422. 13. Assuming the CD-ROM is drive D: on your computer, type:
  423.  
  424.     D:
  425.  
  426. 14. Click Yes when Windows 95 prompts you to shut down and reboot the 
  427.     computer.  
  428.    
  429.     After Windows 95 reboots, you are ready to share resources.
  430.  
  431. 15. To share a device (such as a disk drive):
  432.     a.  Double-click the My Computer icon.
  433.     b.  Click the right mouse button over each device (for example, your
  434.         C: drive) you want to share.  
  435.     c.  From the menu that appears, select Sharing. 
  436.     d.  Click Shared As in the Sharing window.
  437.     e.  Assign a share name to the device, and then click OK.  
  438.         The device is now shared.
  439.  
  440. 16. To share a folder rather than an entire disk drive:
  441.     a.  Select a drive and click the left mouse button to open the drive.
  442.     b.  Select the folder and click the right mouse button.
  443.     c.  Select Sharing from the menu.  
  444.     d.  When the Share menu opens, select a shared name and the way you 
  445.         want to share the folder.  
  446.         Read Only--no user can write to or delete your shared files and 
  447.         folders.  
  448.         Read and write--gives other users permission to delete or change 
  449.         files and folders.  
  450.
