  7. WARNING:  The 3Com NIC Diagnostics cannot shutdown the Client32 
  8.           driver automatically.  To run the diagnostic program just 
  9.           open a DOS box and type UNLOAD 3C90X and press enter.
  10.           You can then run the diagnostic program as usual, but
  11.           you will need to reboot the computer when you finish.
  12.           
  13.           If you have problems with the installation of Client 32
  14.           contact your network administrator or Novell.

  17. Installing the Updated ODI 32-bit Driver on Windows 95 Clients
  18. --------------------------------------------------------------
  19.  
  20. The 32-bit ODI driver only works in a system with Client 32 installed
  21. on it.  Installing Client 32 on your system correctly can be very 
  22. difficult so 3Com has supplied these instructions.  The installation 
  23. procedure is different depending on your system's current networking 
  24. setup, but most likely your system is in one of 3 different states.
  25.  
  26. I.   If you already have Client 32 installed on your system but do
  27.      not have a 3C90X Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL Bus Master NIC
  28.      installed, do steps number 12 thru 15 to disable any other 
  29.      NICs in the system and
  30.      then go to step 20.  
  31.  
  32. II.  If you have a 3C90X Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL Bus Master 
  33.      NIC and Client 32 on your system and just want to update the 
  34.      driver then remove all references to the NIC as shown in steps 1
  35.      thru 15 and then go to step 20.  
  36.  
  37. III. If you are installing Client 32 on your system at the same 
  38.      time as the 3C90X Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL Bus Master 
  39.      NIC, start at step 1.

  43.  1.  Double-click on My computer.
  44.  
  45.  2.  Double-click on Control Panel.
  46.  
  47.  3.  Double-click on Network.
  48.  
  49.  4.  Open the Network control panel on your desktop.
  50.  
  51.  5.  Remove any Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL NICs if they appear in 
  52.      the Network control panel.  Do this by selecting the name of the 
  53.      NIC and then clicking Remove.
  54.      
  55.  6.  When you have removed all of the Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL 
  56.      NICs from the control panel click OK.
  57.  
  58.  7.  If the system ask you if you want to reboot the computer click NO.
  59.      DO NOT REBOOT THE SYSTEM. 
  60.      
  61.  8.  In the Control Panel Double-click on System.
  62.  
  63.  9.  Click on the Device Manager tab.
  64.      
  65.  10. If there is an entry called Network adapters double-click on it.
  66.      If there is not go to step 17.
  67.  
  68.  11. This will open a list of the NICs installed in your system.  
  69.      If any Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL NICs appear in this list 
  70.      remove them by selecting them and clicking remove.  DO NOT
  71.      REBOOT THE SYSTEM.
  72.  
  73.  12. If this leaves any NICs in your system you will have to disable
  74.      them.  Follow steps 13 thru 15 for each NIC in the list.
  75.      
  76.  13. Select the desired NIC and click Properties.
  77.  
  78.  14. Find the Current Configuration at the bottom of the General page.
  79.      It can be found by looking for the line with (Current) in the 
  80.      Device usage box.  
  81.  
  82.  15. Disable the NIC by clicking on the small box to remove the 
  83.      check mark, and click OK
  84.      
  85.  16. In the System Properties window click OK.
  86.  
  87.  17. Insert disk 1 of the client 32 installation disks and run
  88.      SETUP.EXE.
  89.      
  90.  18. Follow Novell's installation instructions.  If you are asked
  91.      to select a device, choose a NIC that you do not own (For 
  92.      example the 3Com EtherLink III Bus-Master PCI Ethernet Adapter)
  93.      This will save you from reinstalling the Novell disks later.
  94.      
  95.  19. When the installation program is finished you will have a 
  96.      choice of rebooting the system, returning to windows , or 
  97.      customize.  Click return to windows.  DO NOT REBOOT THE 
  98.      SYSTEM.
  99.      
  100.  20. Right click on the Start button on your taskbar.  In the menu
  101.      that appears click find.
  102.      
  103.  21. Change the "Look in" field from 
  104.      
  105.      C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu 
  106.      to 
  107.      C:\WINDOWS\INF. 
  108.      
  109.      NOTE: this assumes you installed Windows 95 in the directory 
  110.            C:\WINDOWS
  111.      
  112.  22. Click on the advanced tab, and in the "Containing text" field 
  113.      type:
  114.      
  115.      VEN_10b7&DEV_9050 
  116.      
  117.      Then click Find Now. If no files are found, double check that
  118.      the entered text is correct.
  119.      
  120.  23. Select all of the files you find and remove them to the 
  121.      Recycle Bin. Then empty your Recycle Bin.
  122.      
  123.      NOTE:  You must do this to guarantee that Windows 95 will
  124.             load the right files when you reboot the system.
  125.             
  126.  24. Shutdown your system, and add any NICs that you want to add
  127.      while the system is shut down.
  128.      
  129.  25. Turn your system back on and wait for Windows 95 to detect
  130.      the 3C90X Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL Bus Master NIC.
  131.      
  132.  26. Select driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer, 
  133.      and click OK.
  134.      
  135.  27. Insert the EtherDisk 2 diskette into the A drive and type:
  136.  
  137.      A:\client32
  138.      
  139.  28. Click OK.
  140.  
  141.  29. Follow the instructions to insert the correct diskettes,
  142.      and reboot the system. 
  143.      
  144.      Note: If you get errors trying to find files make sure
  145.            the path is set to A:\ whenever you are copying
  146.            from a disk.
  147.            
  148.  30. When the system reboots you must remove the adapter you 
  149.      don't own that was used as a place holder in step 18.
  150.      (using the same method in steps 1 thru 7.)
  151.      
  152.  31. You must also turn on any devices you disabled in steps
  153.      12 thru 15, by opening the property page and putting the
  154.      check mark back in the box.  
  155.      
  156.  32. Reboot the system and you are finished.
