  3.               Welcome to the Avalon 3D Graphics Collection

  6. AVALON CDROM is a collection of 3D objects, applications, animations,
  7. demos, ray traced images, FAQ's (Frequently Ask Questions and Answers),
  8. computer graphics, rendering, color space tools and utilities.
  9.  
  10. There are plenty of programs and source codes for many computer
  11. platforms: PC Dos and Windows, Macintosh, and even for Unix systems.
  12. There are also conversion tools for various formats, 3D transformations 
  13. perspertive projections, display, plotting and printing utilities.  
  14. You can even try out demo software - these are software that usually 
  15. are limited but functional versions of a commercial software. Thanks 
  16. to all software vendors who support this "try before you buy" capability!

  42. We have sorted the files and application on this CDROM by category.
  43. Please see the "00_index.txt" file within each folder to view the
  44. descriptions.  Some folders include a "readme" document; please be
  45. sure to read these documents.

  47. Some of the files on the disc are compressed.  You can find utilities
  48. to uncompress these files in the "Avalon:MacUtils:Compression" folder.
  49.  
  50. Stuffit Expander ("Avalon:MacUtils:Compression:Stuffit Utils") can
  51. uncompress almost all of the common compression formats.  To install,
  52. copy the "Stuffit Expander 3.5.2 Installer" to your hard drive and
  53. double click upon its icon to install.  Once it is installed, you can
  54. just drag-and-drop a compressed file onto its icon to uncompress it.

  56. The compressed files are identified by their filename extension (i.e.
  57. the letters following the period in the filename (e.g. "program.zip"
  58. has a "zip" extension)).
  59.

  78. MS-DOS and MS Windows users:

  81. To make browsing the disc easier, we have included the VIEW program
  82. for MSDOS and Windows in the root directory of the CDROM.  This
  83. program allows you to page through the index files, browse through
  84. the images on the CDROM, view the documentation and uncompress the
  85. program(s) you want onto your hard disk.  
  86.  
  87. In order to start up the VIEW program, do one of the following:
  88.  
  89. For MSDOS: just type in VIEW to start to view this document.  For
  90. Windows: From the Program Manager, choose the RUN option under the
  91. FILE menu, then enter "D: VIEW" at the run option bar.  (Substitute
  92. your CDROM drive letter for "D" if it is different.)

  96. Image viewing:
  97. --------------

  99. You can view graphics images through the view program. 
  100. Advanced image viewing using Powerview (the default image viewer).
  101.  
  102. For an amazing "psychedelic" effect when viewing pictures under MSDOS:
  103.  
  104.    1) Be sure the disc is using its default viewer (Powerview).  If it
  105.       isn't, use the INSTALL.EXE program to switch to Powerview.
  106.  
  107.    2) Start up the VIEW program.
  108.  
  109.    3) Choose a directory that contains images.
  110.  
  111.    4) Choose an image.
  112.  
  113.    5) When the image is on your screen, press the "A" key.
  114.  
  115. Try some of the following keys:
  116.  
  117. G ...................... Color-kill on/off (or greyscale)
  118.  
  119. I ...................... Inversion on/off
  120.  
  121. A ...................... Cycle palette on/off (press ESC, a mouse  button,  or
  122.                          "A" to stop cycling)
  123.  
  124. C ...................... Component swap  (cycles  through  all combinations of
  125.                          the RGB components: RGB, RBG, BGR, etc.)
  126. Ctrl+C ................. Component swap reset
