  3. WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  4.  
  5. SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way to
  6. capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in 1991.
  7. In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls SnagIt "the
  8. print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
  9.  
  10. SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, a portion of
  11. the screen, or a single window or icon.  SnagIt also accepts input from
  12. the Windows clipboard, or a Windows bitmap (BMP) file.
  13.  
  14. Once captured, SnagIt sends the image to the printer, the clipboard, or
  15. a file, depending on the output option specified.
  16.  
  17. Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such as
  18. word processors and desktop publishing programs via the Windows 
  19. clipboard, or by saving the image to a graphic file and later importing
  20. the file into the desired application.
  21.  
  22. SnagIt functionality can easily be added to other Windows applications
  23. since SnagIt provides full DDE support.

  47. SNAGIT SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  48.  
  49. In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  50.  
  51. > An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware requirements
  52.   of Microsoft Windows;
  53.  
  54. > Microsoft Windows 3.x or Windows for Workgroups 3.x;
  55.  
  56. > A mouse or other pointing device;
  57.  
  58. > For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print bitmaps.
  59.   (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet printers that
  60.   Windows supports.  Plotters cannot print bitmaps, and so cannot print
  61.   images captured with SnagIt.)
  62.  
  63.  
  64. USING SNAGIT'S ON-LINE HELP
  65.  
  66. SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows 3.x Help 
  67. subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information you'll
  68. need to use SnagIt, except for the SnagIt installation procedure. This
  69. (README.TXT) file describes how to install SnagIt.
  70.  
  71. To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then Help
  72. Index from the drop-down menu.  
  73.  
  74. To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from the
  75. Help menu.
  76.  
  77. To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type, select
  78. System Info from the Help menu.  
  79.  
  80. When you register SnagIt, you will receive a printed manual in addition
  81. to the Windows Help file for reference.
  82.

  84. SNAGIT SUPPORT

  94. In any communication with TechSmith regarding a problem with SnagIt,
  95. please clearly state the following:
  96.  
  97. > The product name and version number (SnagIt 2.5).
  98.  
  99. > Your name, address and telephone number.
  100.  
  101. > Your hardware configuration.
  102.  
  103. > A description of the problem, and what you were trying to do when
  104.   the problem occurred.
  105.   
  106.  
  107. INSTALLING SNAGIT
  108.  
  109. The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows 
  110. application.  You must have Windows 3.x installed prior to installing
  111. SnagIt.  To install SnagIt, perform the following steps:
  112.  
  113. 1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  114.  
  115. 2. Insert the SnagIt diskette into a floppy drive.
  116.  
  117. 3. From the Program Manager menu, choose File, and select Run
  118.    from the drop-down menu.
  119.  
  120. 4. From the File Run dialog box, enter:
  121.         a:\setup
  122.    (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than the
  123.    A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the command 
  124.    line above.)
  125.  
  126. 5. Click the OK button.  You will see a setup dialog box.
  127.  
  128. 6. Under "User Information", enter your name and company name, if
  129.    applicable.
  130.  
  131. 7. Under "Load Information", enter the name of the directory where you
  132.    want to install SnagIt, or accept the default Windows directory.
  133.    (If you specify a directory that does not exist, SnagIt will create
  134.    the directory.)  
  135.  
  136.    Then, enter the Windows group to which SnagIt should be added or
  137.    accept the default Accessories group.  (If you specify a group that
  138.    does not exist, SnagIt will create the new group.)
  139.  
  140. 8. When you have finished entering the setup information, click the
  141.    INSTALL button.  SnagIt will be installed into the group you specified.
  142.  
  143.  
  144. UNINSTALLING SNAGIT
  145.  
  146. If after installing SnagIt, you find it necessary to remove SnagIt from
  147. your computer, perform the following steps:
  148.  
  149. 1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  150.  
  151. 2. In Program Manager, find the program group that SnagIt was installed
  152.    in. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete
  153.    key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  154.  
  155. 3. Run File Manager and change to the directory that you installed SnagIt
  156.    in. Delete the files SNAGIT.EXE and SNAGIT.HLP.
  157.  
  158. 4. If you selected "Load SnagIt when Windows Starts" when installing
  159.    SnagIt, you will need to edit the WIN.INI file.
  160.  
  161.    Make sure to make a backup copy of WIN.INI before editing it! Change
  162.    to the Windows directory in File Manager and select the WIN.INI file.
  163.    Choose File Copy and create a backup copy of WIN.INI.
  164.  
  165.    Double click on WIN.INI to run Notepad to edit the file (you may use
  166.    any text editor). Find the LOAD= line in the [Windows] section of the
  167.    WIN.INI file. Delete from that line the program SNAGIT.EXE.
  168.  
  169.    Save your changes and exit Notepad (or your editor).
  170.  
  171.  
  172. STARTING SNAGIT
  173.  
  174. To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
  175. group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during SnagIt
  176. installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
  177.  
  178. Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring it to
  179. the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt is maximized, you may
  180. change any of the setup options (input, output, format, etc.) from the
  181. SnagIt menus.
  182.  
  183. You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an image)
  184. while it is maximized, though it will usually be more convenient to
  185. minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
  186.  
  187. If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during installation,
  188. SnagIt will start automatically the next time you start Windows.
  189.  
  190.  
  191. SNAGIT DEFAULT SETTINGS
  192.  
  193. When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
  194.  
  195. > Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked, it 
  196.   will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  197.  
  198. > Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked, it
  199.   will send the captured image to the Windows default printer for 
  200.   printing.
  201.  
  202. > Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt will capture the image
  203.   with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can print images 
  204.   using this format setting, even if your printer is not a color printer.
  205.   For additional information about SnagIt format options, see the Format
  206.   options topic in the SnagIt Help file.)
  207.  
  208. > Scale is set to 1.00.  This means that SnagIt will output the image at
  209.   the same pixel size as it appears on the Windows screen. This setting
  210.   may result in a smaller printed image than you want; to adjust the image
  211.   size, see the Scale topic in the SnagIt Help file.
  212.  
  213. Refer to the SnagIt Help file for additional information on setting 
  214. SnagIt's input, output, format and other options.
  215.  
  216. You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom of
  217. the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.
  218.  
  219. INVOKING SNAGIT WITH <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  220.  
  221. Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are ready to 
  222. perform screen captures with SnagIt.
  223.  
  224. The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  225. When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined by 
  226. the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the output 
  227. device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different hotkey combination,
  228. see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help file.
  229.  
  230. USING THE MOUSE TO SELECT IMAGES
  231.  
  232. You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
  233. The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  234.  
  235. Left Button     Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen regions
  236.                 and windows to capture.
  237.  
  238. Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press it
  239.                 before you finish making the selection (that is, before
  240.                 you release the left mouse button).
  241.  
  242. REGISTERING SNAGIT
  243.  
  244. This program and its associated files are part of an evaluation package
  245. that is copyrighted by TechSmith Corporation and is not in the public
  246. domain. If you use this program beyond the 30-day evaluation period, you
  247. must register it.  The files that comprise the SnagIt evaluation package,
  248. or the SnagIt archived file (SNAGIT25.ZIP), may be freely distributed as
  249. long as files in the package are kept together and are not modified.
  250.  
  251. SnagIt 2.5 registration is $39.95. To register, complete the form 
  252. REGISTER.TXT (you can also print this form from the SnagIt Help file),
  253. and send it via mail, fax or e-mail, along with payment information, to
  254. TechSmith Corporation. Registrations may also be made via the SWREG on
  255. CompuServe (GO SWREG).

  260.    reminder removed.
