I. Introduction
---------------
From 1846-1869, approximately 70,000 Mormons traveled the Mormon
Pioneer Trail. The Trails' general route is from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake
City, Utah.
This 1,300 mile long trail starts in Nauvoo and passes through Illinois, Iowa,
Nebraska, Wyoming and ends near the Great Salt Lake. Departing from
Nauvoo, Illinois, in February 1846, thousands crossed into Iowa seeking
refuge from religious persecution. They spent the next winter in the Council
Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska area.
Early in 1847, Brigham Young led an advanced party west, generally
paralleling the Oregon Trail, to Fort Bridger, Wyoming, where they turned
southwest and eventually came to the Great Salt Lake.
In January of 1847 some 12,000 Saints were waiting out the winter in
hundreds of camps along the Missouri River. Unable to reach the Rocky
Mountains as planned in 1846, they intended to head west as soon as spring
returned. President Brigham Young, the Quorum of the Twelve, and up to
5,000 Saints were at the headquarters camp called Winter Quarters living in
log cabins, dugouts, wagons and tents.
The first company of Mormon pioneers, led by Brigham Young, officially
entered the Valley of the Great Salt Lake on 24 July 1847. For Latter-day
Saints, this event has come to signal the founding the earthly Zion.
Mormon pioneers first commemorated this new beginning in 1849. The
celebration took place near the spot that Young had recently designated as
the site of a future temple. The observance consisted of a procession which
led Brigham Young from his home to Temple Square to which members of
the nearly twenty local LDS congregations had marched earlier that morning
behind their respective bishops. Brigham Young presided over a devotional
full of both religious reverence and zeal. The celebration ended with a
thanksgiving feast for a bountiful harvest and the blessings of a merciful God.
1997 being the 150th anniversary of the pioneer trek from Winter Quarters,
Nebraska, to the Salt Lake Valley. We at LDS Games decided to create a game
in celebration of the sesquintennial following the theme "Faith In Every Footstep".
II. Your Objective
------------------
Your objective in Mormon trails is to lead your family of three through the
difficult terrain of the unsettled wild western states to arrive safety to
the Salt Lake Valley to join with the saints in Zion.
To accomplish this task you must answer many questions testing your knowledge
of your new found faith. These questions may apply to the Book of Mormon
or the Holy Bible.
The Mormon Trail has been divided into four levels. You must complete each level
before the sun or moon has gone down. If you do not you will have lost one of your
family members to the perils of the west and will have to continue on to Salt Lake
in sorrow.
III. How To Play
----------------
When you begin "Mormon Trails" you will be greeted by the title screen and
then be asked to choose the type of questions you would like to be asked.
You can choose to have questions from The Book of Mormon or The
Holy Bible. To do this you simply click your mouse pointer on the
appropriate picture of The Book of Mormon or The Holy Bible or
change the option button bellow the pictures.
Next you need to choose the method of transportation you'ld like to travel to
Salt Lake with. Mormon Trails has two levels to choose from. The "Wagon
Level" or the "Handcart Level". (Travel by handcart is naturually more
difficult.) If this is your first time playing you may wish to click on the
Wagon level.
You will then be asked you first question and begin your journey towards the
promised land. The questions will become increasingly more difficult and the
sun or moon go down faster with each level. Choose the correct answer by
pressing the number button to the left of the answer you think is right..
Your objective in Mormon trails is to lead your family of three through the
difficult terrain of the unsettled wild western states to arrive safety in the Salt
Lake Valley to join with the Saints in Zion.
At any time during the game you can check on your current position by
clicking on the button. This will bring up a map showing you the progress
you have made in you journey from Nauvoo.

VIII. Installing the game
------------------------
Mormon Trails requires VB40016.dll and associated files.
***Hardware Requirements***
Mormon Trails ver 1.0 for Windows requires an IBM-compatible
computer running Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. It also requires
2 Megabytes of RAM, and 2 Megabytes hard disk space. A mouse,
a 3.5HD diskette drive, and at least a 386 processor are
recommended. A sound card will increase your enjoyment of
the sounds and music included.
***Installation and DeInstallation***
To install the program, insert the installation disk into
the diskette drive. Assuming that your diskette drive is
drive a:, click on the "File" menu of Program Manager and
then select "Run...". In the text box type "a:setup"
(without the quotation marks) and press the <Enter> key.
Then sit back and wait for the program to load. If you
are using Windows 95, follow the same instructions, but
"Run..." will be found on the "Start" menu. During the
installation process a DOS window will be opened while
decompressing the files. When this is finished (when the
title-bar says "Finished"), click on the "x" in the upper
right corner of the window to close it. If you want to run
the program by clicking on an icon, then choose "yes" to
add it to Program Manager. When installation is complete,
you may click on the icon to begin play.
If you are installing from a downloaded file, use PKUNZIP
to expand the downloaded file (you've probably already
done this). Then run Setup.exe and follow the instructions
on the screen.
To deinstall the program, If you should ever need to delete
the game simply delete the directory which includes the
Trails.exe file. They should all be in the directory
that you designated, probably c:\LDSGames\MTrails. If you have
Windows 95, you can simply delete the entire folder with
all of its contents. The two setup files on the diskette
were not copied to your hard disk, so don't worry about them.
IX. F.A.Q's
------------
I know some people who would really like this game. Can I
give away copies?
Yes. We encourage you to give away copies to anyone
who might enjoy the game, as long as they are
copies of the shareware version and not the
registered version. One of te easiest ways to do
this is to copy all the files from your distribution
disk into a temporary directory on your hard drive.
Then select those files and copy them to a new
formatted diskette as many times as you want. If
If you downloaded the game, we suggest that you
unzip the compressed file first, then copy the
files that result onto diskettes to give away.
Why don't I get any Book of Mormon questions when I play?
By default the game gives questions from the
Holy Bible. You can change that setting at
the Level screen with the registered version.
I've played the game so much that I know all the answers.
Are there any more questions available?
The registered version has more questions than
the shareware version. In addition, there will
be entire modules of new questions available
beginning in Fall 1997. If you register, you
will be informed whenever new questions become
available. Some of the new question modules
will include: Which book? Which happened first?
and Where did this happen?
Can we use this game for Sunday School?
They certainly can. Many churches are already
doing that. As long as the church or an
individual has registered one copy of the game
for every computer that is used to play on, you
may use it as much as you like. See the
information on How to Register earlier in this
manual for site license information.
I like the music to the game, but sometimes I would like
to hear music to familiar hymns instead. Is that possible?
Yes it is.
