  8. Welcome to the X-FILES echo!
  9.  
  10. To those new in the echo - and to our echo experts - these are the
  11. guidelines for this echo. I try to keep a very low profile on the echo
  12. in regard to these guidelines, and I usually only speak up when some-
  13. thing really aggrevating comes up.  I consider every person who reads or
  14. posts in this echo to be a guest of the echo, and I try to treat all
  15. folks here as such.  I always encourage self-monitoring; this has shown
  16. that an echo can be handled lightly be a moderator and still be very
  17. successful and enjoyable to all.  Well, on with the guidelines...

  19. DONT'S. (Please...)

  21. 1.  Please don't flame.  Personal attacks are not suited to this echo.
  22.     and everyone'll hate you if you do it, anyways.)  Also, if you are a
  23.     multi-echo flame troller and stop by here just to try to incite a
  24.     riot, don't bother.  All you'll get is ignored by everyone, warned
  25.     by the moderator, then be locked out of this echo.
  26. 2.  No illegal messages (credit card numbers, pyramid schemes, etc)
  27. 3.  No "general chatter" messages please.  General chatter on subjects
  28.     other than The X-files are not appropriate to this echo.  Such
  29.     messaging should occur via Email or on any of the dozen "general
  30.     chat" Fido echos available.
  31. 4.  No overtly sexual remarks.  Please be careful if you discuss any
  32.     alleged adultish images of the X-Files cast.  You can ask or
  33.     offer such image files, or point to addresses where those interested
  34.     can obtain them, but no explicit descriptions, OK?  This is a
  35.     family echo.
  36. 5.  No messages containing blatant racism, sexual harrassment, avoc-
  37.     ation of violence, threats of harm, or vulgar "four letter words".
  38.     Again, I would like this to be a family echo.
  39. 6.  No encrypted gifs or images files.  (most people can't decode them).
  40.     Also no ansi screens please, as most Fido messaging systems can't
  41.     display them properly and such messages just look like "cyberjunk".
  42.     (gifs and ansis can be made available by "freq" though if you are a
  43.     sysop.)
  44. 7.  Please no tagline or signature scripts that are more than 3 lines.
  45.     The echo does cost Fido as a whole to distribute; individual sysops
  46.     often bear the cost of that.  6 line signatures repeated over and
  47.     over in message after message just constitutes more Kbytes that have
  48.     to be transmitted, and is unfair to the carriers of this echo.  A
  49.     name, system origin or E-mail address, and maybe a one line tagline
  50.     (there for entertainment value) is all that is needed.
  51. 8.  Nathan Brauwer is maintaining an X-Files participant list.  If you
  52.     wish to add your name to it, DO NOT quote his whole entire previous
  53.     list.  Just post a one or two line message asking him to add you.
  54.     Quoting the whole list just burns bandwith and costs the sysops who
  55.     carry this echo money for nothing.
  56. 8.  (This is a request, not an order).  Please don't post spoiler messages
  57.     without putting a spoiler warning at the top of your message, and
  58.     giving at least 1 screen of blank lines before you start your message.
  59.     This is just a courtesy to those who don't want to be "spoiled".

  63. 1.  Have fun!  This echo is here to enhance your enjoyment of the subject
  64.     of this echo in all aspects, so have at it.  Enjoy yourself!
  65. 2.  The echo is open to discussion of it's main topic, or any related
  66.     topic.  Threads exploring related topics are fine, as long as they
  67.     continue to relate to the X-Files.  Mentioning other shows is OK too
  68.     as long as it's in passing and relates back to the X-files.
  69. 3.  Please use English for all messages.  Although this echo does reach
  70.     other countries, (Germany, Italy, etc), the vast majority of echo
  71.     participants using the conference speak and use English as their main
  72.     language.  Messages in other languages can be read by only a very
  73.     few people and interrupt the flow of the echo for those who can't
  74.     read these foreign languages.  So please, English only.
  75. 4.  When quoting a message from someone else that you wish to respond to,
  76.     please quote only the relevant lines of text you want to reply to,
  77.     NOT THE WHOLE MESSAGE!  Also please do not leave origin lines or
  78.     taglines in messages you are quoting from.  Again, quote only the
  79.     portion of a message you are responding to.
  80. 5.  If you post an article, transcript or other interesting thing that we
  81.     X-Philers would like, please try to give credit to the original pub-
  82.     lication or source for what you are posting.
  83. 6.  The buying, selling, trading, & searching out of collectibles of the
  84.     X-Files may be a big part of your expression of enjoyment and love
  85.     of the show.  Therefore, if you collect and are looking for stuff,
  86.     or have stuff to sell (related to the X-Files of course) those mes-
  87.     sages are just fine.  Good luck in searching for your holy grails!
  88. 7.  If you find *any* other media related to this echo that we would find
  89.     interesting, please tell us!  This includes books, comics, magazine
  90.     articles or magazines, conferences on the internet, other X-File
  91.     related Fidonet networks, movie/TV interviews or specials with cast
  92.     and crew, listings of cons and personal appearances, reference guides,
  93.     episode guides, or anything else that people who love the X-Files
  94.     would find "cool".  Cross-posts from other conferences or from
  95.     alt.tv.xfiles which you feel would be of interest to readers of this
  96.     echo are also fine.  Share your info with us, that's what we're here
  97.     for!

  99. This echo's purpose is to facilitate communication amongst fans, and
  100. to be an information source for anything that people interested in The
  101. X-files would like.  In other words, the echo is here to serve YOU.
  102. Without YOU, this echo would be nothing.  So use it and enjoy!

  104. (Note:  I post "do" #'s 5 & 6 above specifically because many moderators
  105. of many echos don't allow merchandise-related messages on their echos,
  106. and I wanted you to know such messages are perfectly ok here.  Further,
  107. some moderators prohibit, on their echos, even the mere _mention_ of com-
  108. peting echos, conferences or nets relating to the subject matter of the
  109. echos they moderate.  (Such as on the "sffan" echo, where your humble
  110. moderator got banned for life for just mentioning the Starman echo).
  111. I feel such restrictions impugn the overall enjoyment folks may derive
  112. from an echo, and moderators that force such policies upon users of an
  113. echo are not acting in the best interests of their echo-guests.  There-
  114. fore, no such policies as those will be found here.)

  116. Well, that's about it y'all!  Not much in the way of rules I guess;
  117. most everything is common sense.  I prefer openness and flexibility
  118. and trusting people to be at their best on their own, as I said
  119. before, rather than forcing bureaucracy on everyone, having zillions
  120. of rules, threats for violators, etc.  Chalk it up to my 1960's
  121. background. :-)
