  2. RULES FOR THE UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND GENEALOGY CONFERENCE ON FIDONET

  11. 1. PURPOSE
  12. ~~~~~~~~~~
  13. 1.1  The purpose of the UK and IRELAND conference is to provide a forum
  14.      for the discussion of any matter relating to the Genealogy, Heraldic
  15.      and Family History of the peoples resident, or who have been resident
  16.      in the countries normally referred to as the BRITISH ISLES.
  17.      
  18. 1.2  This area comprises the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
  19.      Ireland, the Irish Republic, the Isle of Man, the Channel, Hebridean,
  20.      Orkney and Shetland Islands.  Discussion of Family history matters
  21.      following emigration OUTSIDE these boundaries should take place in
  22.      the appropriate conference - eg AUS_GENEALOGY for Australian matters.

  24. 1.3  The only exception to this is when there is no such conference. The
  25.      smaller colonies such as Gibraltar, Falkland Islands, and the West
  26.      Indies are examples, together with countries in the former British
  27.      Empire such as India, and family history matters relating to these
  28.      countries may be discussed in this conference also.
  29.      
  30. 1.4  The International Genealogy Conference (echotag GENEALOGY.EUR) is
  31.      also an appropriate forum for enquiries about, and discussion of
  32.      family history which crosses international boundaries.

  35. 2. GUIDELINES FOR GETTING THE BEST OUT OF THIS CONFERENCE

  37. 2.1  When replying to a message please keep quotes from the message you
  38.      are replying to a minimum, as this will increase the chances of your
  39.      message being read by others.  For example, a whole screenful of
  40.      quotes from a previous message means that the "Looking Over Your
  41.      Shoulder" (LOYS) brigade are more likely to skip to the next message
  42.      rather than press the page-down key to read yours, so it is to your
  43.      advantage to adhere to this guideline!

  45. 2.2  Real names MUST be used at all times.  It helps also if your message
  46.      contains an indication of your whereabouts, but it is not essential.
  47.      Other routine "signatures" of more than two or three line of text
  48.      should be avoided unless listing surnames you are researching.
  49.  
  50. 2.3  It is recommended, but not essential that you include SURNAMES you
  51.      are researching in CAPITALS.  This enables the "speed-readers"
  52.      amongst us to pick them out at a glance from the main body of the
  53.      text.  In addition please try to keep the SUBJECT of your message in
  54.      step with the content so those who scan by subject will be assisted
  55.      in picking out your message from amongst others.

  57. 2.4  Do not however write your whole message in CAPITALS.  This is the
  58.      equivalent in electronic terms of SHOUTING, and can be very taxing to
  59.      read.  Special consideration will however be given for the visually
  60.      impaired, if they can only deal with messages in upper case.

  63. 3. DISTRIBUTION

  65. 3.1  This is an international conference in the sense that it is open to
  66.      anyone, anywhere in the world.  The Moderator will NOT however be
  67.      responsible for providing for its connection to any particular BBS;
  68.      SysOps are therefore requested to consult their nearest uplink for
  69.      a source.

  72. 4. COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING

  74.      There is to be NO COMMERCIAL advertising in this Conference. This
  75.      shall not be construed to exclude fair comment by users of any
  76.      products which might be of assistance to Genealogists, Heraldic
  77.      Researchers or Family Historians, for instance shareware or
  78.      information on CDROM.

  81. 5. NETWORK AVAILABILITY, TECHNICAL STANDARDS AND GATING
  82. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  83. 5.1  The Moderator welcomes any network that wishes to import/gate/export
  84.      I&UK_GENE, the only restrictions being:
  85.  
  86. 5.2. FidoNET Technical Standards will apply in general, and in
  87.      particular where any conflict - due to differences - might arise,
  88.      FTSC standards will be paramount.
  89.  
  90. 5.3. In the case where I&UK_GENE is gated to another network, as a
  91.      matter of courtesy, the gating SysOp should inform the I&UK_GENE
  92.      Moderator of any such gating.

  95. 6. RULES ABOUT RULES
  96. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  97. 6.1  If in doubt, LEAVE MODERATING TO THE MODERATOR!  It should be
  98.      noted however, that no message which is lawful, friendly, non-
  99.      commercial and related to genealogy, is likely to fall foul either
  100.      of any FidoNET rule, or of these conference rules.

  102. 6.2  If you do not agree to abide by these rules please do not use the
  103.      conference, nor (if you are a SysOp) permit anyone else to use it
  104.      via your system.
