{Consumer Advocate Echo Rules} ================== {Updated: 7/13/96}
In accordance with current practice and adopted echomail policy within
Fidonet, the following rules have been established for the Consumer
Advocate Echo. The following rules will be posted periodically in the
echo.
The purpose of the rules is quite simply to make sure the messages
conform to Fidonet standards, keep the threads on topic, and to
(hopefully) insure that we all can peacefully co-exist here.
1. The topic is anything that deals with consumer *issues*. This
means that it is ok to discuss world trade, legislation, the
ethics and morals of companies, and anything else that the
moderator thinks may be related, but does not include, for example,
"bang-for-the-buck" type topics and the merits of one product over
another. These last two are are among the topics which more
properly belong in the Consumer Report Echo. Purely political
issues (like taxation) belong in the POLITICS Echo.
2. DO NOT EVER attack someone else for what they say. Disagree with
them if you like, but don't make personal attacks. Read what you
have typed before you send it off.
3. Do not quote too much of the messages you are replying to. Only
enough is needed so the reader knows the context of your message.
4. "Off topic" messages should be ignored. The Moderator will
respond to them directly. Answers by others just tend to
perpetuate themselves and lead the threads astray. (Moderating
will be done, primarily, via NetMail so, just because you don't see
it happening that doesn't mean that I'm not on the job.)
5. Sysops (system operators) from throughout the country spend their
own hard-earned $$$ to make these echos available for our pleasure
and education. Therefore, advertisements of any kind, and in
particular, *COMMERCIAL_ADVERTISEMENTS* are not in good taste and
are *TABOO*. It is totally unfair to ask these sysops to pay your
advertising costs, and your cooperation here is most certainly
expected.
6. This echo may not be gated to other nets without the express,
written and signed, permission of the moderator.
7. Discussion of your feelings about how this echo is, or should be,
moderated are off-topic in the echo. They detract from the
purpose and the flow of the echo. I am always open to your ideas,
suggestions, and constructive criticisms, just send them to me in
netmail, email, or leave me a message on my BBS with your voice
number and I'll call and discuss it with you.
8. Use of gutter language is not appropriate in taglines or in
messages... this is a G-rated echo. Current political topics/
issues are off topic in taglines or message text. Extended
signature blocks, including those consisting of Internet
addressing are not permitted here because they take up bandwidth
for no purpose other than to massage the ego of the poster.
9. Use of aliases is not allowed (this includes posts via any
"anonymous remailer"). If you haven't enough faith in what you
post to stand behind it with your own name, you can't expect
anyone else to have much faith in it, either.
That's all the rules folks. They are mostly just common sense and
common courtesy. Please live somewhere very near them and all will be
well. However, they will be enforced if they are violated.
I hope you like this Echo and find it useful - also keep in mind the
Consumer Report Echo, where the merits of one product over another are
discussed.
