RTweak!
RTweak is a utility for power users that allows them to take control of
their system. The tool is available for download from users.snip.net/~csteel
under the software page. The license fee is $10, with site licenses
available (contact us.) The current version, 2.0, is shareware. If you like
the software please send a check or money order for $10.00 to:
KS Software
1030 E. Lancaster Ave.
Suite 812
Rosemont, PA 19010
Your money goes to support future software release (RTweak 98?) and feed hungry
software developers. Let me know if you have any problems or suggestions.
RTweak runs under Windows 95 (some features work under NT, but it is not
supported.) To run it, unzip the file to your hard drive and run the
setup program. Since the program uses the registry, it is recommended
that you backup the user.dat and system.dat files in your Windows directory
prior to use.

New in Version 2.0
* Added advanced icon support for .dll, .cpl, and .bmp files
* Fixed a minor problem in the MRU list
* Added Start Menu support for Control Panel, Printer, and DUN icons

Program Sections
Alter Add/Remove Programs List in Control Panel
-----------------------------------------------
This allows you to cleanup any programs in the Add/Remove Programs
List in Control Panel which have been uninstalled but not removed from the
list. You can remove programs by selecting the appropriate program then
clicking on "Delete Entry". Do not remove any listed programs which are still
installed on your system
Remove Programs that Automatically Start
----------------------------------------
On Windows startup, programs and services can run that are hard to
remove. On one machine we found a program in this list that brought up an add
for AOL Instant Messenger every couple of reboots. The programs can be listed by
selecting the appropriate keys in the list box and then looking in the display box
under it. If a program appears that you do not want to run at startup, you can
delete it from the display box by selecting in and clicking on "Delete Entry".
Cleanup Most Recently Used Files
--------------------------------
Windows keeps several Most Recently Used Files (MRU) lists in the registry.
The most well know is the Documents section of the Start Menu. By clicking on the
buttons, the entries in the various MRU files lists will be deleted and reset. This
can be used to clean the entries after shutdown to remove audit trails, or to reset
menus that have been filled with single use entries.
Modify Start Menu Programs
--------------------------
Ever want to add the Control Panel, Printers, or Dial Up Networking icons as
cascading menus? Now you can. By checking and unchecking the appropriate boxes, you
can add these or remove them from your Start Menu. It may take 5 to 10 seconds for Windows
to register the change.
Set Miscellaneous Options
-------------------------
The entries here allow you to change default icons to more descriptive ones.
For .cpl and .dll files, the registry will search for any instances of icons within
the program and use this as the icon instead of the generic icons. This can provide
insight into the contents of the files. For bitmaps, it places a smaller version of
the actual bitmap as the icon, allowing for easy browsing of pictures in Windows
Explorer. The bitmap option only works if Windows Paint is the registered Bitmap viewer
at this time.
Modify Windows Install Directory
--------------------------------
Did you copy your Windows .Cab files to your hard disk? Do you want Windows to
look in the c:\windows\system directory to see if it has already installed files before
prompting for a CD? You can change the default directory that Windows looks for setup
files in by clicking "Edit Directory", then typing the new directory and clicking on
Apply."
I hope you have found this software useful and decide to register it to allow us to
continue to supply quality software. If the $10 represents a hardship for you, please
send us a note by postal mail and you will still be notified of any updates. Thank you.
Regards,
