Hello CD-Publishing enthusiasts,
If you thought the Philips recorder brought the $30,000 price for
CD-ROM Recorder solutions down to manageable levels, Pinnacle has
some news for you.
Pinnacle Micro has introduced RCD-202, initially for the Mac platform,
Dos PC and other versions to follow.
The RCD-202 MAC along with interface lists for $ 3995!
Not sure yet if the above includes any kind of premastering software.
But the price list did not mention any price for software, so I assume
some software is included in the above price.
Even for just hardware, the price is very good indeed. (compared to
about $6,500 for the Philips unit). From the features it seems better to
wait for the next version of the drive.
Here is the feature list as in the literature sent to me. Reproduced
without permission, but I don't think Pinnacle will mind.
Errors and Omissions may be mine. E&OE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
FEATURES OF THE PINNACLE RCD-200
RECORDABLE CD-ROM DRIVE
(MAC)
The Macintosh version of the RCD CD mastering software supports the
following features.
o Creates HFS (Hierarchical File System) disks. This is the format all
Macintosh hard disk, opticals etc. It cannot be used on any other
platform but is good for distributing Macintosh software
o Creates ISO-9660 disks. This is the format used on the IBM-PC and many
other platforms, including the Mac. It can be used to distribute
software for PCs or multi-platforms
o Creates Audio disks. These are standard audio disks like those bought
at a music store. Two types of data files can be copied onto disks as
"audio tracks". These two types of files are AIFF (Audio Information
File Format) which is a cross-platform standard, and Sound-DesignerII
format, which is created by DigiDesign. These two file formats cover
about 98% of audio data files in existence.
o Creates Mixed Mode disks. This type of disk contains both CD-ROM (HFS
or ISO) and audio data. The CD-ROM data comes first on the disk (closer
to the center) and the audio data comes after. The user will have to
decide before copying the first audio track how much of each he wants.
o Photo CD. We will not be providing the ability to create Photo CD disks
due to contractual restrictions by Kodak. We will be able to read this
type of disk, though. The ability to read multi-session PhotoCD disks
will be available in the next version of the drive (around May)
o Multi-session. Multi-session disks have more than one table-of-contents
(which identifies audio and data areas). Most current CD players can
only play the first session of a CD, even if the CD was written with
multiple sessions. The next version of the RCD will have the ability
to read and write multi-session disks.
o Disks of all types can be created by mixing and matching files from
any on line volume including hard disks, optical disk, SyQuests, etc.
Only network volumes cannot be used as these can't be read fast enough
to keep the RCD drive buffer full.
o CD-I (CD Interactive). This format will be supported in the next version
of the drive
o 74 minute CDs. The drive can currently read and write 74 minute CDs, but
according to the vendor this will not be officially supported until a
Japanese committee has formulated a standard for this type of disk.
This standard is expected by the end of March, and official support will
be built into the drive by the next version.
o The RCD drive cannot read audio data directly from a CD. The only way to
get audio data to save to a new CD is by using a digital system (such
as the one created by DigiDesign) or by using a CD Drive which can
read audio data (such as the Sony CD-150). Some "future" version of the
RCD will provide the ability to read audio data directly from a CD.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to the drive specs, the transfer rate is in 150kb/sec range.
So to fill a CD-ROM, it is going to take about 63 minutes... The Philips
does it in half the time, but you pay the bucks for it.

I will be posting announcements such as these, which I consider will be
of interest to the subscribers of this list. If you have similar information,
please do send to the list.
