  15. Q:      What is the Pioneer DRM-604X?
  16.  
  17. A:      The DRM-604X is a quadruple speed (600 KB/s) six disc CD-ROM 
  18. minichanger.  The discs are contained in a removable magazine.  
  19. The magazine is a ruggedized version of the Pioneer-patented six-
  20. disc magazines used in audio CD changers.

  23. Q:      How is the 600 KB/s data transfer rate achieved?
  24.  
  25. A:      Pioneer's Quadraspin(tm) technology spins the disc at four times 
  26. the normal CD rotation speed of 200-500 rpm.  Quadraspin is made 
  27. possible by Pioneer-proprietary VLSI error correction chips, a new 
  28. optical head and servo system, and a high-torque spindle motor.

  31. Q:      Does the drive support Kodak's PhotoCD?
  32.  
  33. A:      Single session PhotoCD discs are currently supported.  Kodak is 
  34. presently (Mid Jan 93) testing the drive for Multisession 
  35. compliance.

  38. Q:      Will an upgrade be available for current DRM-604X owners?
  39.  
  40. A:      Yes.  Pioneer will make the upgrade drive PROMs available at a 
  41. nominal cost.

  44. Q:      Will the drive work with OS/2?

  46. A:      Yes.  The DRM-604X works with the OS2CDROM.DMD BaseDev.  (Users 
  47. must add "/ET" as the first parameter to the SCSI adapter .ADD 
  48. line in CONFIG.SYS to enable LUN support.)

  51. Q:      What comes with the drive?
  52.  
  53. A:      DOS device drivers for Future Domain and IBM SCSI/A host adapters, 
  54. an ASPI driver, Microsoft CD ROM Extensions (MSCDEX), Macintosh 
  55. drivers, audio and power cables, one magazine, installation 
  56. software, manuals.

  59. Q:      What is the drive interface?
  60.  
  61. A:      SCSI.  The DRM-604X has two 50 pin Centronics connectors.

  64. Q:      Is it SCSI-2 compatible?
  65.  
  66. A:      Yes, but SCSI-2 audio functions are not yet supported.  The DRM-
  67. 604X currently emulates a DRM-600A (Pioneer's single speed six 
  68. disc changer).  Upgrades for SCSI-2 audio functions will be 
  69. available 2Q93.

  72. Q:      Can the the DRM-604X be daisy-chained with other drives?
  73.  
  74. A:      Yes.  The DRM-604X has switchable termination and push-button SCSI 
  75. ID setting for easy daisy-chaining.

  78. Q:      Will it work with my "XXXX" SCSI host adapter?
  79.  
  80. A:      Using the ASPI driver supplied with the drive, the DRM-604X can be 
  81. used on Adaptec, Buslogic, Trantor, Ultrastor and other cards that 
  82. have ASPI managers.  Contact the adapter vendor for ASPI manager 
  83. availability.

  86. Q:      How do you switch discs?
  87.  
  88. A:      Under OS/2 and DOS, each disc is a drive letter.  The drive 
  89. switches discs as necessary when a drive letter is accessed.  No 
  90. user intervention is required.  On the Mac, six disc icons appear 
  91. on the desktop, and the drive switches as necessary.

  94. Q:      Can you use it on a network server?
  95.  
  96. A:      Many customers are using the DRM-604X on servers, although Pioneer 
  97. does not generally recommend this.  The drive is, of course, a 
  98. changer, and only one disc may be read at any one time.  When 
  99. multiple users are accessing multiple discs simultaneously, the 
  100. drive will switch discs to satisfy read requests as they arrive.  
  101. Because of the time needed to switch discs, performance will 
  102. suffer.  The drive may be suitable for low-load situations (no 
  103. more than one user at a time), or in special applications where 
  104. requests are queued by the server.  You may wish to investigate 
  105. several packages that allow network access:

  129. A:      The drive recognizes audio tracks and slows to normal speed for

  140. A:      No.  The drive transfers the data to the host for decompression

  146. A:      Although we have not encountered such a disc, DIP switch and 
  147. software commands allow the drive to be set to "normal" (150KB/s) 
  148. speed.

  152. Mammals?
