was created the day after 1.2.9 was released to fix a bug that caused
all pre-7 systems to hang during startup, and crashed some System 7.x
machines. For those of you wondering about the story behind the
bug, and why 1.2.9 missed its scheduled release date by three days,
it's pretty simple. When the new viruses appeared, I was in the middle
of work on a new and improved Gatekeeper which was going to be version
1.2.9 in a couple of months. Unfortunately the work, while mostly
complete, still wasn't quite finished at the time those viruses
appeared. So I had to either (a) try to finish the new improvements
very quickly, or (b) rip them all out and return, more or less, to the
functionality of 1.2.8. I went for option 'b'. Unfortunately, while I
was ripping out the nifty new code, I overlooked one file in one of
the ten or so projects that currently combine to form Gatekeeper.
Consequently, some of that new code which wasn't quite finished was
built into one portion of version 1.2.9. Since it was mostly working,
it passed all my in-house (actually "in-office" would be more
accurate) tests prior to release, but failed when it finally met up
with the real world. Why didn't I just go back to the archived
1.2.8 source? Because there were some bug fixes and various
uncontroversial (but significant) improvements already in 1.2.9 which
I certainly wanted to be part of any new release. So, here's 1.3;
use it in good health. Please delete any copies of 1.2.9 that you may
have laying around and spread the word that 1.3 is available.
[Thanks, BTW, go to Brian Price for allowing himself to be
dragooned into running some last minute tests.] ----Chris

Scans stacks for the Merry Xmas virus and zaps it.
I have recently experienced one of the most annoying Macintosh para-

"Merry Christmas" is an annoying little bugger to have, like any
virus. Fortunately, I was able to spot it before it infected anything
really important. I highly suggest that anyone with HyperCard
download this file. It will scan your stacks for Merry Christmas and
permanently zap it. Although small (less than 12K) it does its job
very efficiently. Have fun with HyperCard! *Stiles

In response to some complaints on the Internet regarding the

SAM* 3.5. Symmantec's script will not do an installation if you have
replaced the original Virus Definition file. Go figure! I don't know
about you, but I update mine when necessary on the original disks. I
have created my own scripts which should work fine. I have System
7.1, and I know it works there, but I also have created a System 6
installer. It should work fine, but I have no place to test it. Only
the target folders have changed. These scripts only recognize the
Virus Definitions file on the Decontamination Disk, so make sure that
is where you place your updated Definition file. If you decide to
use these, please just e-mail me and let me know that you have used
it. Also, let me know about any troubles you may have. I can be

Current recommendations for virus-related tools.
Here are our current recommendations for virus-related tools. Such
tools can be divided into three classes: those that prevent
infections, those that warn you when an infection is present, and
those that remove infection. This message only discusses
non-commercial software. 1. Prevention Two excellent tools
for prevention of viral infections are the Disinfectant extension
(distributed as part of the Disinfectant application) and the
Gatekeeper package. The Disinfectant extension is very easy to
install and requires no user configuration. However, it is important
to stay up-to-date with this tool, because it only recognizes viruses
it has been taught about. Gatekeeper is an effective
virus-prevention method for the more technically inclined. It requires
some customization to work well in a particular environment. The
benefit of Gatekeeper is that it provides some protection against some
possible kinds of future virus, not just

Biblio+ is a shareware Filemaker Pro (version 1.3) database. It's main
purpose is to allow proper automatic generation of bibliographic
references even when certain components (eg publisher, year...) are
omitted. Other than that, you should find that Biblio+ is just about
as powerful and usable as any other `commercial' Bibliographic
database/manager. When exporting data, the FullRef field contains the
full bibliographic details. If the Harvard referencing convention is
desired, the Year Inside option should be chosen. The FullRef_Rtf
fields contains the full details in proper formats. Simply paste the
output into the appropriate place in the accompanying RtfTemplate
file. Save it as another name and that file is now a proper
Rich-Text-Format (rtf) file. Plea: If you feel that BIBLIO+ has some
useful value, or use it for any purpose, or want to encourage ME to
improve BIBLIO+ and develop other `affordable & useful' databases,
PLEASE send me an international money order cheque (or cash) made
payable to: Andrew Lee, for ANY amount that you find appropriate. If
you pay your shareware contribution, you will receive a PASSWORD to
enable you to MODIFY LAYOUTS and DELETE records. If you license the
source code, you will be able to create your own layouts etc... All
suggestions for improvements are welcomed. Please do not
distribute Biblio+ without all the original materials, especially this
file. Biblio+ is not for commercial re-sale without my knowledge and
permission. Please inform me if you decide to place Biblio+ onto

Multi-function calculator .
Calculator II is a pleasant looking color multi-function calculator
that runs as an application under system 6.x or System 7. The
calculator was written as an application to be run under MultiFinder
or System 7 alongside other applications. It improves on AppleUs
original calculator by adding trigonometric functions, functions for
base 10 and natural logorithms and their inverses, hex-to-decimal and
decimal-to-hex conversion, a percent increase/decrease key, a memory
function for storing values across uses of the program, and all of
these functions can be invoked by using the F-Keys on the Apple
Extended keyboard (F5 - F15). The calculator also allows users to
correct trailing digits of values entered on the display of the
calculator through the use of a backspace key. A Ticker Tape is also
provided to display the results of past calculations. Balloon help
and general information about the program is available under either
the Help menu under System 6.x or the Balloon Help menu under System
7. This software is being distributed as FREEware so give it a try
and let me know what you think! This version of the calculator
contains several bug fixes and enhancements: o Fixed a couple of
Balloon Help bugs that caused balloons to appear or not appear at
inappropriate times. o Numbers copied to the clipboard from the
calculatorUs display no longer contain leading spaces. o The
calculator no longer permits the errant factorial calculations of
negative numbers and 0. o Fixed a bug using the HEX and DEC keys
successively to convert numbers between hexadecimal and decimal. o
Changed the creator of the Calculator to *calc* from *CALC* to make
accessing its bundle more realiable. o The Calculator now saves
its preferences in a Prefs File rather than inside itself. This will
permit future updates of the program with Updaters like UpdateMaker.
o A new Info item was added to the Help Menu to thank all the
people that have helped to make Calculator II a success.

many people would find it useful as it is. I worked very hard on it
until I got it to it's current condition. Since then I have just been

yet, another address program. If you are not a data-base programer -

entire program. You do not need to mess with the menus, but you can

disk and an envelope with two stamps on it, I will fill it up with my
other programs and send it back to you. If at least 10 people
register this program, I will polish it up and add all the features
that are planned. Special Notes: % The Cool Address Book does
import TEXT files. % The Cool Address Book does not export text
files to other programs - yet, but it will. % The Remind feature
has not been installed yet, but soon it will show you a list of
everyone in your address book with birthdays of any month. % There
is not Help feature yet, but a nice one is planned. % The ZipCode
bar code feature has not been added yet. % The Cool Address Book
should work fine with the HyperCard Player program except for the Find
feature which will not work right now. Hey this program is still in
development -- so send me your ideas. If I can I will incorperate
them into the design. Thank you for your support.
