  3. Welcome to the July 1996 edition of the Project Gutenberg CDROM!

  5. This CD-ROM contains the etexts (Electronic Texts) of the Gutenberg
  6. Project for 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, and some of 1996.

  8. Most of the texts are provided in both ascii and zip archives.  
  9.

  26. Quick Start Instructions:
  27.  
  28.   Windows 95:
  29.     Insert the cdrom into the cdrom drive.  This will automatically
  30.     start a CDROM browser program called WinView.
  31.  
  32.   Windows 3.1:
  33.     Go to "File" menu under program manager and choose Run.  At the
  34.     Command Line box, type: "D:\setup", assuming 'D' is your cdrom drive.
  35.     This will install a group folder with icons for this cdrom.
  36.  
  37.  MSDOS Quick Start:
  38.     Change to your CDROM drive and type "view".
  39.     Example: 
  40.           C:\> D: 
  41.           D:\> view
  42.  
  43. Please consult the VIEW.DOC file in the \docs\ directory for full
  44. documentation on using VIEW.EXE.

  48. Using the 00_INDEX.HTM files
  49.  
  50. We have included 00_index.htm files so the user may use a Web browser
  51. to view our disc.  
  52.  
  53. In order to view this disc using these 00_index.htm files, point your
  54. Web browser to the root level 00_index.htm file.  
  55.  
  56. For example, in Netscape/Mosaic:
  57.  
  58.     1) Choose File/Open File (or File/Open Local File with Mosaic)
  59.     2) Choose your CDROM Drive under "Drives"
  60.     3) Select the 00_index.htm file
  61.     4) Click on OK
  62.  
  63. The 00_index.htm files have been tested under Netscape 1.1 (Windows,
  64. Macintosh, and FreeBSD), Netscape 1.22 (Windows), Netscape 2.0b2,
  65. Mosaic 2.00 (Final Beta), and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  69.                     USING THE DISC -- MACINTOSH
  70.  
  71. To use the disc using a Macintosh, merely double-click on the file
  72. you wish to view.

  76. This disk conforms to the level 1, ISO-9660 format.  All the
  77. filenames are limited to eight single-case characters, with an
  78. extension of up to three characters.  Most directories have an index
  79. file named 00_index.txt that contains a description of each file in
  80. the directory.

  84. WinView and View
  85.  
  86. To make browsing the disc easier, we have included the program WinView
  87. for Windows, and the program VIEW for MSDOS on the CDROM.  These programs
  88. allow you to page through index files, browse through directories on the
  89. CD, view documentation and uncompress/install the program(s) you want
  90. onto your hard disk.

  96. This disk contains many shareware programs and images. Shareware can
  97. be considered to be a sort of try before you buy system where you are
  98. expected to pay the program author a registration fee if you find the
