  23. What is FreeBSD?  FreeBSD is an operating system based on 4.4 BSD Lite
  24. for Intel, AMD, Cyrix or NexGen "x86" based PC hardware.  It works
  25. with a very wide variety of PC peripherals and configurations and can
  26. be used for everything from software development to Internet Service
  27. Provision.

  29. This release of FreeBSD contains everything you need to run such a
  30. system, including full source code for everything.  With the source
  31. distribution installed you can literally recompile the entire system
  32. from scratch with one command, making it ideal for students,
  33. researchers or folks who simply want to see how it all works.

  35. A large collection of 3rd party ported software (the "ports
  36. collection") is also provided to make it easier for you to obtain and
  37. install all your favorite traditional UNIX utilities for FreeBSD.
  38. Over 350 ports, from editors to programming languages to graphical
  39. applications, make FreeBSD a powerful and comprehensive operating
  40. environment that extends far beyond what's provided by many commercial
  41. versions of UNIX.

  45. purchase the 4.4BSD Document Set from O'Reilly Associates and the
  46. USENIX Association, ISBN 1-56592-082-1.  We have no connection with

  49. If you're new to FreeBSD then you should also read EVERYTHING listed
  50. in the Documentation menu on the boot floppy.  It may seem like a lot
  51. to read, but you should at least aquaint yourself with the types of
  52. information available should you later get stuck.  Once the system is
  53. installed, you can also revisit this menu and use a WEB browser to
  54. read the installed FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) and Handbook HTML
  55. documentation sets for FreeBSD.  You can also use the browser to visit
  56. other WEB sites on the net (such as http://www.freebsd.org) if you
  57. have an Internet connection.

  60. DISCLAIMER: While FreeBSD does its best to safeguard against accidental
  61. loss of data, it's still more than possible to WIPE OUT YOUR ENTIRE DISK
  62. with this installation!  Please do not proceed to the final FreeBSD
  63. installation menu unless you've adequately backed up any important

  97. updated information and provides a number of advanced documentation
  98. searching facilities.  If you wish to use Netscape as your browser,
  99. you may install the BSDI version from ftp://ftp.mcom.com or simply

  105. If you have the Ports collection installed (see the Configuration menu
  106. or enable the Ports collection when given the chance to do so during
  107. the Novice installation).

  110. Several other non-commercial browsers are also available in
  111. /usr/ports/net and may be compiled and installed in the same fashion.
  112. Many are also available as pre-compiled packages - see the Packages
  113. entry in the Configuration menu for more details.

  115. The Handbook and FAQ are also available as on-line documents in
  116. /usr/share/doc and can be read using the ``file:/usr/share/doc''
  117. syntax in any HTML capable browser.
