  3. Welcome to MechEng: ASME's Mechanical Engineering Toolkit!
  4.  
  5. This disc contains 5000+ programs with a particular focus on scientific and
  6.  technical subjects.  The majority of the programs are for the IBM-PC
  7.  architecture but there are files for Amiga, Macintosh, and UNIX programs.
  8.  
  9. The MechEng archive originated with the MechEng BBS, a free public service
  10. of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).  The BBS has been
  11. in operation since 1987, offering Usenet news, free Email, listserv
  12. services, and access to the MechEng archive through a standard BBS format,
  13. answering at (608) 233-3378.  The archive is also available through the
  14. MechEng Web site (http://www.mecheng.asme.org), FTP site
  15. (ftp://ftp.mecheng.asme.org/pub), ASME's web site (http://www.asme.org), and
  16. on CDROM.  All access points offer the same collection.  For questions

  44. Quick Start Instructions:
  45.  
  46.   Windows 3.1/NT:
  47.     Go to "File" menu under program manager and choose Run.  At the
  48.     Command Line box, type: "D:\setup", assuming 'D' is your cdrom drive.
  49.     This will install a group folder with icons for this cdrom.
  50.  
  51.   MSDOS Quick Start:
  52.     Change to your CDROM drive and type "view".
  53.     Example:
  54.           C:\> D:
  55.           D:\> view
  56.  
  57.   Windows 95:
  58.     Insert the cdrom into the cdrom drive.  This will automatically
  59.     start a CDROM browser program called WinView.
  60.     Alternatively, you can also install the program group and icon
  61.     by selecting the "Start" menu and choosing "Run".  At the Run
  62.     box, type: "D:\setup", assuming 'D' is your cdrom drive.

  64. Using the 00_INDEX.HTM:
  65.  
  66. We have included 00_index.htm files so the user may use a Web browser
  67. to view our disc.
  68.  
  69. In order to view this disc using these 00_index.htm files, point your
  70. Web browser to the root level 00_index.htm file.
  71.  
  72. For example, in Netscape/Mosaic:
  73.  
  74.         1) Choose File/Open File (or File/Open Local File with Mosaic)
  75.         2) Choose your CDROM Drive under "Drives"
  76.         3) Select the 00_index.htm file
  77.         4) Click on OK
  78.  
  79. The 00_index.htm files have been tested under Netscape 1.1 (Windows,
  80. Macintosh, and FreeBSD), Netscape 1.22 (Windows), Netscape 2.0b2,
  81. Mosaic 2.00 (Final Beta), and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  106. WinView and View:

  108. To make browsing the disc easier, we have included the program WinView
  109. for Windows, and the program VIEW for MSDOS on the CDROM.  These programs
  110. allow you to page through index files, browse through directories on the
  111. CD, view documentations and uncompress/install the program(s) you want
  112. onto your hard disk.

  115. Shareware

  117. This disk contains many shareware programs and images. Shareware can
  118. be considered to be a sort of try before you buy system where you are
  119. expected to pay the program author a registration fee if you find the
  120. program or image useful.  You will find details of registration
