===== Information for Users ("READ-ME") ================
NOTE: What you are reading now is a file called VENDINFO.DIZ. This
file is in an emerging industry-standard format which attempts to
consolidate and standardize the various information files
(READ_ME.TXT, VENDOR.TXT, LICENSE.TXT, etc.) found in many shareware
products. You can load this file into a text editor or word processor
for viewing or printing.
There are two other information files included with Magic Desk.
GUIDE.COM is the Magic Desk User's Guide. To view it simply type GUIDE
at the DOS prompt while in the Magic Desk directory. ORDER.COM is the
order form and instructions for ordering the registered version of Magic
Desk. To view it simply type ORDER. While viewing GUIDE.COM or
ORDER.COM you can print the document by pressing ALT+P or you can write
the document to a normal text (TXT) file by pressing ALT+W. Converting
the documents to text files will allow you to load them into a word
processor or text editor if you desire.
This section contains information that updates, clarifies, or emphasizes
information found in the User's Guide (GUIDE.COM). Please see the User's
Guide for complete details on using Magic Desk.
NEW IN VERSION 3.22
Magic Desk is now DESQview-aware.
Incorrect date fixed: Earlier versions sometimes experienced a
problem with the system date not advancing correctly if Magic Desk
is left on overnight. This has been fixed.
Multiple configuration problem fixed: The multiple configuration
option introduced in version 3.20 did not work correctly in certain
circumstances. This has been fixed. Also, configuration files can
now be stored on different drives. See below for details on setting
up multiple configurations.
Password problem fixed: Earlier versions had sporadic problems with
correct passwords not being accepted. Also, passwords were
sometimes case-sensitive when they should not have been. This has
been fixed. Passwords are no longer case- sensitive. If you
entered passwords in earlier versions, you may find under certain
circumstances that they no longer work when you load this version.
In this case you will have to re-enter the password. After doing
this you should have no further trouble with that password. If you
have password-protected your Helper button and find you can't open
the the Helper window to change the password, please contact us for
instructions.
NEW IN VERSION 3.20
Screen blanker: The screen blanker now displays some graphics
instead of just a blank screen. The screen blanker is no longer
memory resident. This will speed up the loading of Magic Desk, and
will prevent memory conflicts that caused problems on some systems.
See below for more information concerning the screen blanker.
Multiple configurations: You can now run multiple configurations of
Magic Desk on the same system with only one copy of the program
files. Each copy can have different settings (programs, colors,
passwords, etc.). See below for detailed instructions.
Required DOS version: Magic Desk now requires MS-DOS version 3.3 or
higher, previous versions required version 3.0 or higher.
INSTALLING MAGIC DESK: Magic Desk is distributed in a compressed format
and cannot be run directly as is. You must first install it on your hard
drive. To install it:
1. When you see the C> prompt (or a similar prompt that
identifies your hard drive), insert the program disk in disk drive
A (or B).
2. Type A:INSTALL (or B:INSTALL) and press the ENTER key.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Magic Desk may also be installed from your hard drive if you have
already copied the compressed files onto your hard drive.
If you have an earlier version of Magic Desk your hard drive, you can
install this new version into the same directory and the installation
program will detect and save any existing button and configuration
information. In other words, you won't have to recreate the information
that's in the earlier version. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU MAKE A BACKUP
OF THE FILES IN YOUR MAGIC DESK DIRECTORY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL
THIS NEW VERSION INTO THE SAME DIRECTORY. This will preserve your
current Magic Desk or ToyBox files in case something goes wrong during
installation.
STARTING MAGIC DESK: After installation, the command to start Magic Desk
is MAGIC. This runs the MAGIC.BAT file that kicks things off. Do not
start the program with the MDMAIN command. Running MDMAIN.EXE directly
will appear to work fine until you try to launch a program from Magic
Desk. At that point, the program will simply terminate and leave you at
the DOS prompt.
USING MICROSOFT WINDOWS ICONS: To use a Windows icon in Magic Desk you
must first read it into Painter, the icon editor built into Magic Desk.
After reading the icon and making any desired changes to it, write it
back to disk without the ICO extension. Magic Desk will create a new icon
file with an ICN extension, then you can use it. NOTE: Magic Desk
includes 30 sample icons that have a ICN extension. These are already in
Magic Desk format and do not need to be imported through Painter. This
version of Magic Desk also includes a utility that will convert all the
Windows icons in a specified directory to Magic Desk format in a single
pass. See the file UTILITY.TXT for details.
RUNNING BATCH FILES: If you are running a batch file (a file with a BAT
extension) from Magic Desk, be sure you have set the Batch File button
for that program to YES. If the Batch File button is set to NO, Magic
Desk will not reappear after the batch file is finished.
REARRANGING ICON BUTTONS: You can change the arrangement of the icon
buttons on the screen by dragging them around with the mouse or keyboard.
See the User's Guide for details. After you've put the buttons fairly
close to the proper position, you can press ALT+A to have Magic Desk line
them up neatly in rows of five, in the new order.
RUNNING DOS 6 MEMMAKER: If you have commands in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
to automatically run Magic Desk when you turn on your system (as
described in the User's Guide), you may need to temporarily remove the
commands while running the MEMMAKER program included with DOS 6.
CONVERTING PCX IMAGES: The User's Guide describes a procedure for using
Windows Paintbrush to change the colors of some PCX images so they appear
correctly in Magic Desk. For this procedure to work correctly, you must
be running Windows in 16 color mode. It will not work in 256 color mode.
To change the Windows color mode, you must run Windows Setup (normally
located in the Main folder).
SCREEN BLANKER: The Screen Blanker window contains a button labeled
"Mouse". In previous versions, the setting of this button determined
whether moving the mouse would cause the blanked screen to reappear. You
can still toggle this button between YES and NO, but it has no effect.
If you have a mouse installed, moving it while the screen is blank will
always cause Magic Desk to reappear.
RUNNING MULTIPLE CONFIGURATIONS: You can run multiple "copies" of Magic
Desk on one system, with only one copy of the program files on your disk.
Each copy can have different settings (programs, colors, passwords,
etc.). For example, you can set up a different configuration for each
member of the family. You can even set up a main copy of Magic Desk,
with icon buttons to launch each individual configuration.
1. You must create a separate directory to hold the configuration
files for each copy of Magic Desk. For example, if your Magic Desk
program files are in the \MDESK directory, you can create
subdirectories called \MDESK\MOM and \MDESK\DAD to store two
separate configurations. To create these two directories you would
give the following commands from the DOS prompt:
MKDIR \MDESK\MOM
MKDIR \MDESK\DAD
2. Then you can start Magic Desk with either of these two
configurations by giving the command MAGIC followed by the name of
the directory, as follows: (Before giving the command, the \MDESK
directory must be the current directory.)
MAGIC \MDESK\MOM
or MAGIC \MDESK\DAD
The configuration directories may be on a drive other than the drive that
contains the Magic Desk program files.

===== Installation =====================================
Magic Desk is distributed in a compressed format and cannot be run
directly as is. You must first install it on your hard drive. To
install it:
If you have an earlier version of Magic Desk on your hard drive, you
can install this new version into the same directory and the
installation program will detect and save any existing button and
configuration information. In other words, you won't have to recreate
the information that's in the earlier version. This does not apply to
earlier versions of ToyBox or ToyBox II. We strongly recommend you make
a backup of the files in your Magic Desk directory before attempting to
install this new version into the same directory.
We distribute Magic Desk as a shareware program, which means we
allow you to try the program out before you pay for it. If you
find Magic Desk helpful and continue to use it, you must submit
the required registration fee. Pricing is as follows:
Registration Fee: $29.00
Shipping Fee Per Order (U.S. and Canada): $4.00
-OR-
Shipping Fee Per Order (International): $6.00
We have included an order form (ORDER.COM) on disk that you can
print out if you desire. The order form also explains how to pay
by check/money order or credit card.
If you are interested in purchasing a site license that will allow
you to use Magic Desk on multiple systems, please contact us.
Site licenses are much more economical than purchasing multiple
copies of Magic Desk.
Registering brings you several important benefits:
1. We'll send you the latest registered version. The
registered version doesn't display the opening information window
when you start it.
2. With the registered version you will also receive:
- A printed version of the User's Guide.
- A collection of hundreds of Magic Desk icons.
- A utility that will convert all the Windows icons in a
directory to Magic Desk format in a single pass.
- A utility that will let you quickly view all the icons
in a directory.
3. You'll be entitled to free technical support for as long
as we distribute the program. Available means of technical
support include phone, fax, mail, and CompuServe.
4. We'll send you notice of future upgrades and new products
from Virtual Magic Software.
