  6. Preparing and Formatting an ESDI Hard Disk without COMPSURF
  7.  
  8.      The utility ESDIDISK was developed to prepare ESDI hard disks for
  9.      NetWare file servers. Running ESDIDISK and the manufacturer's format
  10.      utility for ESDI hard disks substitutes for COMPSURF. 
  11.  
  12.      With ESDIDISK you can:
  13.  
  14.           o    Run a track zero test on the first 32 sectors of the disk. 
  15.                Error information generated during succeeding tests is saved
  16.                in these sectors.
  17.       
  18.           o    Run a sequential surface test to locate additional defects
  19.                not in the hard disk manufacturer's defect list. 
  20.  
  21.           o    Run a random read-write test to check the functional
  22.                integrity of the hard disk. 
  23.  
  24.           o    Place the COMPSURF stamp on a successfully-tested hard disk
  25.                so that 286-based NetWare will access the disk.
  26.  
  27.           o    Add sectors flagged "bad" during format (but not spared out)
  28.                to the NetWare bad block table.  
  29.  
  30.           o    Test the hard disk and verify that the disk channel is
  31.                functional. 
  32.  
  33.           COMPSURF should not be run on the disk before or after running
  34.           ESDIDISK.  ESDIDISK is available on NetWire as ESDIDR.ZIP.
