NOVELL TO SUPPORT SUNSOFT SOLARIS 2.0
Product Based on USL's UNIX System V Release 4 Open Systems
Platform
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sept. 4, 1991 -- Novell, Inc., today
announced it will partner with SunSoft, Inc. to introduce the
Solaris 2.0 UNIX computing environment for Intel microprocessors
into the Novell reseller channel and incorporate NetWare network
operating system products into this new distributed computing
environment.
"Solaris is positioned to become one of the leading 32-bit
multitasking distributed computing solutions," said Ray Noorda,
president and CEO of Novell. "With NFS connectivity to NetWare,
we believe Solaris will gain widespread acceptance. It is an
excellent example of how our industry can respond to customer
demands for operating system products that better support the
integration of desktop and other computers through networks."
"Novell is recognized as a leader not only in networking
technology, but also in supporting the effective delivery of
this technology through distribution channels worldwide," said
Edward J. Zander, President of SunSoft. "We believe our
collaboration with Novell is an important factor in enabling
Solaris to deliver on the promise of distributed computing."
The Novell and SunSoft relationship expands their technology
development for the networking of DOS, OS/2 and Macintosh desktop
environments to UNIX through client/server network computing. In
addition, the two companies will cooperatively provide training
as well as service and support for Solaris through joint programs
in the reseller channel.
Solaris is based on UNIX System V Release 4, the operating system
standard from UNIX System Laboratories that unifies the major
UNIX system derivatives into a common source code release. The
new operating system utilizes SunOS, a leading implementation of
UNIX System V. Solaris gives users a powerful, simple graphical
environment for high-performance computing with a path toward the
next generation of distributed objects technology.
The Solaris 2.0 computing environment features symmetric
multiprocessing with application-accessible threads, allowing for
commercial applications to greatly increase their processing
speed and throughput performance. With multiprocessor
application-addressable threads, a single application is divided
into many small units, each of which targets individual
processors in a system simultaneously. SunSoft has announced
that Solaris 2.0 will begin shipping to customers in the first
half of 1992.
Novell's announcement was made at SunSoft's Catalyst Developers
Conference which was attended by more than 800 international
software developers and computer manufacturers.
SunSoft, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a
subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc. The company is the leading
