NOVELL EXPANDS PRODUCT LINE WITH ANNOUNCEMENT OF NETWARE LITE
Peer-to-Peer System Provides Low-Cost, Simple Networking for Small
Businesses
PROVO, Utah--Sept. 16, 1991--Novell, Inc. today announced NetWare
Lite, its new peer-to-peer network operating system that offers a
low-cost, simple method for small businesses to share DOS-based
personal computer resources such as applications, files and
printers. In addition, NetWare Lite coexists with NetWare v2.2 and
NetWare v3.11, Novell's server-based network operating systems,
preserving customers investment.
"In today's competitive marketplace, small businesses need the
increases in productivity that network computing provides," said
Jim Bills, executive vice president of Novell's NetWare systems
group. "To date however, some small businesses perceive that
network computing has been too complex and costly. With the
introduction of NetWare Lite, small businesses can now have a
low-cost, simple networking solution and the security of buying
from a recognized industry leader."
Scott Nielson, Owner of Pioneer Home Builders added, "I currently
have two computers that I rely on to run my business. Even with my
limited computer background I found installing NetWare Lite and
learning to use the network surprisingly straightforward. With a
network interface card plugged into each PC and one cable linking
them together, we gained immediate access to each other's data.
NetWare Lite makes our two machines seem like one powerful
computer."
Preservation of Investment
Today's small businesses need products that grow as their
businesses grow, allowing them to preserve their investment in
computer hardware and applications. Because NetWare Lite is priced
per node, users can inexpensively network as few as two PCs and
then grow their networks in cost-justified increments. And because
NetWare Lite coexists with NetWare v2.2 and NetWare v3.11, Novell's
high-performance server-based network operating systems, customers
can grow into these products as they need more advanced
functionality.
Easy to Install, Use and Maintain
NetWare Lite is designed specifically for the first time PC network
user, making installation, use and maintenance easy.
Easy to Install--All software needed to install and run NetWare
Lite is contained on one or two diskettes depending on the media
size. It can be installed in minutes. In addition, the
documentation, on-line help, and user interface are all geared to
the first-time network user.
Easy to Use--Once NetWare Lite is installed, it is surprisingly
easy to use. NetWare Lite is operated with a single, full-screen
menu utility that lets users quickly execute a variety of network
operations such as locating a directory on a shared disk drive or
sending a print job to a shared printer.
Easy to Administrate--NetWare Lite also includes a number of
administration tools to help customers manage the network. These
tools and capabilities include:
Ability to restrict access to shared resources with a simple
security scheme
Single user account allowing users to log into the network only
once rather than logging into each computer on the network that
has shared resources
Shared resource management from any PC on the network eases
network administration
Flexibility to move shared resources without affecting users'
access to these resources
Availability and Pricing
NetWare Lite will begin shipping in early October, 1991 and will be
generally available from resellers and computer retail stores by
the end of October. French, German, Italian and Spanish versions
of NetWare Lite will be available within 90 days of the English
version. NetWare Lite is available in both 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch
formats and is priced at U.S. $99 per node. Users need one copy of
NetWare Lite for each PC they want to network. For pricing outside
the U.S. and Canada, customers should contact their local Novell
reseller.
Novell is also working with third-party developers and original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who will provide integrated
hardware/software networking solutions for NetWare Lite customers.
These solutions should be available shortly after the announcement
of NetWare Lite.
Introductory Offer
As an limited-time introductory offer, NetWare Lite will come
bundled with DR DOS v6.0, Digital Research's latest release of its
powerful desktop operating system for IBM personal computers and
compatibles. DR DOS v6.0 offers customers increased memory and
hard disk space, better caching, comprehensive PC security and
improved task switching. This offer will be available to customers
in the U.S. and Canada only.
Novell, Inc., (NASDAQ: NOVL) develops NetWare systems software
products that manage and control the sharing of data across a
variety of network computing environments, including computer
workgroups, departmental networks and business-wide information
systems.
