NOVELL INTRODUCES NETWARE MANAGEMENT AGENTS
Reliable and Secure NetWare Server Management
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- February 5, 1992 -- Novell, Inc., today
announced new NetWare Management Agents, a set of NetWare Loadable
Modules (NLMs) that provide reliable and secure management of a
NetWare server.
NetWare Management Agents serve two primary functions: allowing
the server components to register as manageable objects and
attributes; and providing a set of functions to support the
management of these objects and attributes by the NetWare Services
Manager application. These agents, implemented as NetWare Loadable
Modules (NLMs), relay statistics describing software, hardware and
data resources within a NetWare 3.x server and support both NetWare
Services Manager (Windows) and NetWare Services Manager (OS/2).
American Power Conversion, Inc., a leading supplier of power
protection products for NetWare networks, intends to develop an
application that will use Novell's NetWare Management Agents to
send status reports on UPS performance to the NetWare Services
Manager. "American Power Conversion is committed to developing
uninterruptible power supply support for Novell's Network
Management System," said Doug Radenbacher, software design engineer
at American Power Conversion. "Since power problems occur
frequently, information about power and other environmental
conditions is critical to the network administrator. Through NMS,
American Power Conversion and Novell will provide timely
information about power and UPS status to ensure the integrity of
network operations."
"The use of NetWare in the corporate environment has continued to
increase," said John Edwards, vice president of marketing for
Novell's NetWare Products Division. "Users have asked us to
enhance the manageability of NetWare to simplify and consolidate
NetWare support. The NetWare Management Agents do this by allowing
centralized control of multiple NetWare servers."
Agent Features and Functions
NetWare management agents consist of three NLMs which, when
combined with Novell's NetWare Services Manager application,
provide secure and reliable management capabilities. Key features
include:
o Continuous monitoring of NetWare events -- network managers
can see network events as they occur, or store them to disk
for later examination.
o Detailed configuration data and realtime statistics -- users
can instantly view vital server statistics, Random Access
Memory (RAM) usage, available disk space, and a list of NLMs
in current use.
o Alarm notification -- NetWare Management Agents notify users
in realtime of potential resource allocation or attribute
problems. Network managers can take preemptive action to avoid
network malfunctions.
Pricing and Availability
Each NetWare server managed by Novell's NetWare Services Manager
products requires a single set of NetWare Management Agents. These
will be available through Novell's distribution channels in April
1992 for the suggested list price of US$495 per server, or in
packages of 20 for US$7995, 100 for US$34,995, or 500 for
US$150,000. An NLM that provides SNMP (Simple Network Management
Protocol) access to NetWare server resources is included with the
Windows version of NetWare Services Manager.
Pricing applies in the United States and Canada only. For pricing
outside the United States and Canada, customers should contact
their local Novell Authorized reseller.
