Novell Adds 5- and 50-User Version of NetWare v3.11
Customers move to NetWare v3.11
PROVO, Utah──Feb. 3, 1992──Novell today added a 5- and 50-user version of
its popular NetWare v3.11 operating system, reducing the entry-level and
mid-range pricing and allowing customers to better tailor their purchases
of NetWare to meet their needs. The 5- and 50-user configurations are in
addition to the 10-, 20-, 100- and 250-user versions of NetWare v3.11,
fully stratifying the NetWare v3.11 family of products.
"These two new products make it more affordable for customers to purchase a
network operating system that meets their current and future networking
needs," said John Edwards, director of marketing for Novell's NetWare
Systems Group.
The new 5-user configuration is ideally suited for small businesses,
professional offices and remote branch offices that require the increased
power and performance provided by NetWare v3.11 or where the organization
is standardizing on NetWare v3.11. The new 50-user configuration provides
an additional mid-range point for customers who require NetWare v3.11
technology, but who have fewer than 50 users.
The Same NetWare v3.11 Performance, Interoperability and Reliability
Both the 5- and 50-user configurations offer the same interoperability,
network services, high performance, reliability and security of the other
NetWare v3.11 configurations. NetWare v3.11 utilizes a 32-bit,
multitasking architecture and supports DOS, Windows, Macintosh, OS/2 and
UNIX workstations. In addition, NetWare v3.11 offers reliability features
such as disk duplexing, read-after-write verification and disk mirroring.
Customers Move to NetWare v3.11
Customers have signaled to Novell that they are moving from NetWare v2.2 to
NetWare v3.11 as a result of NetWare v3.11's additional functionality, ease
of use and ease of support. This is particularly true at the high-end
configurations of NetWare v2.2 where many customers are migrating from the
50- and 100-user versions. The pie charts below show this trend.
The graphs above are derived from the buying trends for large
configurations prior to and following the release of NetWare v3.11.
The chart on the left indicates that prior to the release of NetWare v3.11,
75 percent of these configurations were still purchasing the NetWare v2.x
products. The chart on the right shows that following the release of
NetWare v3.11, more than 90 percent of large sites have shifted their
purchases from NetWare v2.x to NetWare v3.11. Although not as striking in
contrast, similar studies indicate that mid-range sites (20 to 100 users
per server) are making the same transition.
In addition to the new 5- and 50-user configurations of NetWare v3.11,
Novell is adjusting prices for the 50- and 100- user configurations of
NetWare v2.2. The new pricing becomes effective April 3, 1992.
