  29.   You can't use high density disks in a low density drive, however you
  30. can use low density disks in a high density drive.

  53.         There is nothing that you can do to use HD disks on the 1541
  54. drive.  If you look at the center hole of the disk, you will notice that
  55. all you can see is the actual disk (media material).  If you have any
  56. double density (DD) disks, look at the center hole.  On those disks, you
  57. will notice a metal ring in the center.  This is the only way you can tell
  58. the difference between DD and HD disks.

  60.         If you know of some friend who has a HD 5-1/4 drive, maybe he
  61. might have some DD disks that he will trade to you.  If not, then look
  62. around for DD disks.

  89.   Double sided, high density will NOT work...gotta get double sided,
  90. double density.  Look at the Office Max/Office Depot/office supply store
  91. near you...I believe Fuji and Verbatim still make them...

  160. Fidonet is an amateur BBS network that has been around for about 10
  161. years now.  There are Fidonet BBS's (run on IBM's and Amigas - as well
  162. as Macs all around the world.

  164. When you reply to a message, your reply is sent to a Hub BBS (usually
  165. late at night to save on costs), and then it is sent out to other
  166. BBS's.  It is a little slower than Usenet, but very friendly.

  168. There are 3 Commodore only echos:

  171. CBM-128
  172. CBM-GEOS
  173.  
  174. And there's also PCWRITE (I'm it's moderator), which is used to discuss
  175. emulators and cross-platform computers.

  177. Please DON'T send me Email asking about Emulators, though. I simply
  178. provide a place on Fidonet for these to be discussed.  I have no
  179. personal interest in using Emulators, so I just direct people who send
  180. Email on that subject to the FAQ file on emulators for information.

  230. There ARE some newsgroups listed that start with "fido." but none seem
  231. to have any activity.

  233. I am a Fidonet BBS Point (meaning I run a private BBS).  I receive
  234. Fidonet mail pkts via my Email, but that's not the same as what you're
  235. asking.  I still have to take the packet and process it before I can
  236. read the messages.

  238. To keep this topical to CBM content, I'm also an Omni BBS Point and
  239. receive Omninet mail packets from Brian Bell via Email too.  Same deal
  240. though.  I have to process the mail before I can read it.

  245. someplace local to you. Other than that, I don't think you can over the
  246. Internet.  I *could* put the packet files on an FTP site, but you
  247. wouldn't be able to reply to them.  You can read these with Rod
  248. Gasson's Browser program though.

  290. You need to call a Bulletin Board that carries Fidonet messages.  Then
  291. you just read the messages and reply to them.  (Or use an offline mail
  292. reader to download the messages and read them offline).

  294. Usually, Fidonet BBS's are simply your local Bulletin Boards -- and
  295. they may even carry Fidonet messages without "announcing" that they
  296. do - it's just a matter of checking out the message areas or asking the
  297. sysop.  Also looking to see if the BBS has a "Netmail" message area is
  298. another good clue.
